“I identify as a first generation Latina”
You can’t just identify as that. You either are or you aren’t.
THANK YOU
If you don't even speak spanish you are just an american with a hispanic lastname like Cameron Diaz.
I AM a first generation Latina. But I identify as the seventh son of a seventh son.
@C caymer lol you should know
THANK YOU
I’m French. She better take that black and white striped shirt off because the French navy wore that shit and lost their lives on sea. Jk wear what u want as long as it’s not racist and genuinely harmful to someone else.
I agree, but a costume cannot be "genuinely harmful" to anyone......it's a fucking piece of fabric.
Sinead Bracken 😂😂😂
Now that you say it She kind of looks like Josephine Baker
They are erasing French history and narratives
As a Chinese person, I see nothing wrong in wearing clothings that represent our culture as long as u do it in a respectful way. There’s nothing wrong in celebrating another people’s culture and appreciating the beauty of it. It’s a way to beak down barriers b/w people and promote harmony and understanding.
Even chopstick
I agree
And this video says that wearing it as a Halloween costume isn't respectful.
That's perfectly fair. If I was to see a non-Chinese person dressed up as an obvious stereotype, in order to be mean-spirited. I'd happily inform them that they are a jerk and what they're doing is morally appalling. But you can dress up as somebody of another culture in a respectful way. Only by enjoying each other's culture, do we bring people of different cultures together.
I think people hate it because it’s stereotypical.
I’m Norwegian( Scandinavian ), but I won’t cry If some 7 year olds wear a viking costume on Halloween lol
yea i got happy when i saw americans wear norweigan culture cause its not really shared at all
Kanra I'm half Scandinavian(🇳🇴🇸🇪🇫🇮🇩🇰) and American 🇺🇸
You wouldn’t understand bc it’s white people wearing other white people’s clothing. On the other hand, white people wearing (and oftentimes humiliating) nonwhite clothing is offensive, considering what white people have done (and continue to do) to nonwhite societies.
@@logicalbullshit "Americans" or Europeans? The true "Americans" are the indigenous/native people of the Americas. Also, Native American clothing has meaning to each part. For instance, wearing a headdress is reserved among the most wise, and each color and design in the clothing has meaning.
Peaches First off, we all know who the true “Americans” are (the Natives). Second of all, people should begin to learn about the racist backbone “America” was built on to begin to understand minority women like the ones shown above.
I'm disappointed in the victimhood culture that our youth has come to embrace. If we constantly feel offended by everything, then living will be hard once we get out in the real world.
Maylena Scott the problem in the past is that we weren’t offended enough though... 🙃🤔
Maylena Scott I’m disappointed in the mastery culture that the older generation still clings to.
Agreed.
Maylena Scott speach
Muh Russia salad not really. They are wearing my culture on their face so they should stfu about cultural appropriation.
"My culture is not a costume"
So are Brazilians wrong when they celebrate the Carnival? Because i know they uses costumes of other countries or cultures to represent something.
Shaggy honestly... Brazilians haven’t figured it out yet as well, it is a really hot topic nowadays, the problem is that: it is incredibly hard to say what is and what isn’t cultural appropriation. After Portugal, England, France, Netherland, Japan and a lot of others countries went to the country, without counting the africans countries and the natives (that is too many to keep counting) and all these people have built families and with time they started marrying each other. There are some cities down south where people still use some traditional European clothes, the buildings themselves look European, if you go to states like São Paulo, there are cities with traditional Japanese temples, festivals and etc, while the north have more African influence and it goes on all over the country, so it is really hard to say if it is cultural appropriation once a lot of these cultures actually moulded the Brazilian culture
But when comes to the carnival, actually people don’t use a lot of culture based costumes. Yes, there are some, but most of them are actually pop related with a lot of glitter
It depends because a lot of the times, they're a way of celebrating other country's cultures that moulded Brazilian culture into what it is, so those are not wrong (in my eyes at least) because they're celebrating not mocking. But the mockery is obviously wrong even though it's not done a lot
@Kakashi Hatake exactly, in Belgium we do have carnival
Lol wtf “chola culture”? 😂 i was expecting her to complain about the typical sombrero and pancho
Leighton St. Hale it’s a LA culture not Mexican 😂
Alfredo Alcantar yeah But even that is stupid t get mad about 😂
Almost no one here in Mexico wears Sombrero and Poncho since the Mexican revolution. Not even in small towns. People wear sombrero but with a plaid shirt, or other kinds of shirts ("guayaberas" in tropical coastal places for example). In cold places people wear sombrero and leather jackets. In the big cities (México City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, León, Puebla, etc.) People wear t shirts and jeans, or sports wear, or formal clothing, just like in any other occidental country.
Juan Jacobo Mora Cerecero Yup I know but thanks for trying to enlighten me
Leighton St. Hale Search history of cholo ! Educate yourself! 🙄
Ironically everyone's wearing clothes that wasn't of their culture
Like a Texedo or even a jail/prison clothes lol
@@sager3388 you can’t wear that. You’re copying prison culture🥴
That's exactly what I was thinking, if you are pointing out what's wrong, then wear and show what's right, simple.
@@thrasherfoo 🤣 🤣
Ironically, I don’t think so. Because if our traditional clothes have cultural, meaning, then regular clothes of the modern day, don’t.
The double standard here is so blatant and horrible. These people have quite literally convinced themselves they are oppressed, justifying the double standard in the process.
Costumes are not meant to be an 100% accurate/ historical representation of a culture. It’s supposed to be an appreciation and celebration of a certain culture, which should be open to any and all cultures worldwide, because they are beautiful. I loved getting to dress up in a kimono once during the Japanese unit in history when I was younger. I loved flipping through books and learning about different cultures, histories, and traditions.
Putting on a costume is not offensive. By wearing that kimono, I was not pretending to be Japanese. I was recognizing and appreciating the beauty of their culture. Yet, these people think ripping up their own cultural clothing is less offensive? To me, that looks like nothing but shame.
It’s funny, really, how they didn’t discuss how white cultures are also turned into costumes and representations. Pilgrims, Romans, Scandinavians, Renaissance, Vikings, etc. are all examples of white cultures that are also celebrated and worn as costumes (And those aren’t 100% accurate either! Guess what? Vikings didn’t have horns on their helmets. But it’s a representation and recognizable part of the culture). If they were really that concerned, why did you not include those?
Are you telling me next time I go to the Renaissance Faire any person who is not Italian and is dressed as my culture should be yelled at? Are you telling me the little girl who lives down the street shouldn’t have dressed up as Moana for Halloween even though she JUST LOVES THE PRINCESS?
As someone with strong Italian roots, I do not take offense when other people joke about Italian culture, dress up in Roman togas, or put on our costumes. I wasn’t offended when the Met Gala had a deeply Catholic theme. I love seeing my heritage and culture celebrated by ALL. Ever since I was little, I’ve loved learning about and celebrating cultures worldwide. I found the different styles, traditions, and practices fascinating; And I hate that appreciation is now being called stealing- especially since it apparently only goes one way.
Katie'sBookCorner I agree with that comment entirely except the fact that kimonos are Japanese
Moody Oops- I did accidentally say Chinese instead of Japanese once! I have gone back and edited. You’re correct, and it was a Japanese unit in school.
Katie'sBookCorner Got it.
There's a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. I'm totally okay with the latter what i cant stand is when people think my culture is something funny, something that is only ok if its a costume. if i wore my cultural clothing in america everyone would treat me like a terrorist because i come from a mostly muslim country and our culture has Islamic stuff in it but if someone else wears it as a costume then its suddenlly fine and even funny? thats terrible. that just gives more power to the people who are already hurting and discriminating us. the renaissance fair may not hurt you but when they appropriate our culture it hurts us. it helps the thought that muslims are people you can make fun of it strengthens the thought that the turks are unruly and lazy and barbaric even tho we really are not. it doesnt show that we care a lot about people around us, or that our religion is one full of love or any of the good sides. its just a joke for most of the people. do you know bc of that stigma around us its so much harder for me to get a job in a european country? its much harder for me to win an award bc no one wants to give us one. all of our inventors and scientists and important politicians and historians are erased but of course you tell me how much it hurts the white people. im not saying its right im saying it doesnt hurt you half as much as it hurts us.
Omg yes I 100% agree with you when people who are not Irish celebrate saint patricks day and dress up in green and ginger wigs ect I don’t go around shouting at the to take it off and stop appropriating my culture like ahahah these people need to stop being so sensitive
Honestly this is stupid
Like I’m Arabic and I really won’t mind it if someone wore my cultural cloth , why do people these days just get offended about every little thing , it bothers me a lot
Forever Weird lmao this bothers me and I’m Arab but Arabic is the language Arab is the person
I dun care I knoww that Arabic is the language and I “should” say I’m Arab , but saying I’m arabic works as well so yeah
Same, I'm a Singaporean Malay and Chinese and Indians have worn our traditional Baju Kurung from time to time. I've worn the Cheongsam before. I've had Chinese friends wear the Sari and Mundu.
What's the big deal? I see no problems here.
Forever Weird same. This hypocrisy in the video is honestly followed by the idiocracy. I could go on to tell them “MY CULTURE IS NO YOUR MAKEUP!” (Eyeliner is Egyptian.)
I know everyone is so easily offended. Why can’t we be happy instead of focusing on the negative. As long as someone doesn’t make fun of other people’s cultures I think it should be ok. I mean I’m from Scandinavia (sweden) and I don’t get offended if someone dresses up as a viking that doesn’t look anything like the vikings originally did, but I don’t get offended. But I still get how they feel because there are ppl that make fun and mock other cultures
This is like me getting offended at super Mario because I’m Italian . Is this real life?
Is super mario a culture?

A it actually started way after, in America, Latin American people used this against the racism and social stigmas, nowadays it’s likely referring to an insult, (as a Mexican I can say this is true it’s mostly to make fun of a person or sometimes to call them a funny way of criminal or somethings like that)

And you still didn't get it? And guess what, she can't even get the culture she's trying to emulate right! She probably just walked down the aisle, saw the picture on the package and thought, "Hey! so she decides to dictate what people can and cannot wear... like what happened in Hawaii all those years ago... history repeats itself once again! Soon we will have a new Hitler!
You and these offended people are not explaining why it's disrespectful. Ya, if you're doing a caricature and mocking them, like 1920's blackface it's disrespectful. But if you're doing an accurate recreation of the clothing from a place of admiration, then it's not disrespectful.
Arguments about what is respectful and what is not gets muddier when characters like Moana become celebrated heroes across the world.
Polynesians wanted representation in mainstream culture, now that you have contributed to the greater culture, the characters, the legends are out there and they exist. And people will want to cosplay and emulate their heroes. I don't see how telling non-Polynesians that they shouldn't want to be more like Moana is a good thing.
At the end of the day, awareness of other cultures expands when outsiders are allowed to participate.

ALL I have to say is that if that is cultural appropriation does exist I am not sure if it is a bad thing and it has taken place all over the place. And I find it odd that some people choice what to get offended & what not to get offended over. I mean the Christmas 🎄 tree 🌳 originated in Germany, so I guess that’s culture appopration and McDonald’s started in America, so I guess that is cultural apporation. So if it’s going to be offensive to put on these sort-of costumes does that mean that the rest of the world has to give back the Christmas Tree to the Germans and nobody can eat a McDonald unless they’re American?
Yup
So basically, wearing traditional clothes is generalising an entire culture...

No. Wearing the traditional clothes of a culture is not a generalization. Mocking elements of that culture and using them to mock a culture by mashing them up, sexualizing them, or straight up deriding them is a generalization.

I don't understand how celebrating someone else's culture is offensive... of course blackface and degrading other cultures is not okay but wearing the clothes to celebrate diversity I think is great... I honestly don't understand why u Americans r whining abt this when there r so many bigger issues out there...
Sofia Sobchacki in my country we also have a holiday like that. It's called Carnival. Trinidad and Tobago
Sofia Sobchacki
The fact that these morons are actually comparing Halloween costumes to Black Face just shows how narrow-minded and stupid they are.
Sofia Sobchacki can I come to Brazil so the Indian people don’t stare at me when I wear a sari?
@Sugakookiebaby BTS Why should it be accurate? Costumes are costumes.
That's because the SJWs still think you guys are "Latinx".
Rubbish. People can wear what they like.
Soooo true... I'm sri lankan and everyone wheres every culture clothing at parties and events.... And the native people of that culture never think of it as a racist act... They appreciate it that people out of their culture like to wear their traditional clothes.... Only Americans make it an issue...

My opinions might offend you, please note I'm not really trying to offend any culture even though I speak kind of risky.
Look I get it, I get that you don't want your culture to be put in a category, Or to be viewed as bad, but seriously? So you're telling me if a 10 year old kid American child wants to be a geisha or a dragon, That they couldn't be one because it would be considered offensive? And its just a costume it doesn't mean all people think like that? I understand that the label that has been put on most cultures can be bad, but honestly how about Instead of attacking children who want to dress up for Halloween, How about you speak up about real problems with culture appropriation..
*DISCLAIMER*
I'm sorry if I offended anyone with this passage, I would just like you to know that Im not a Racist, but I do think culture appropriation is getting a little out of hand..
Beffey Hotdog I understand where you’re coming from, but a lot of them are out of hand. I’m Cherokee and when I see costumes in the store with names like “sexy savage” it’s just hurtful. I’m a human being, not some foreign creature. Taking a beautiful and rich culture and making it into some cheap Halloween costume is super disrespectful and ignorant. I don’t care if someone dresses in traditional Native American dress for Halloween. I think it’s great when people celebrate and respect other cultures, but don’t put on some $20 polyester costume, paint your face red, put a feather in your hair and run around with a tomahawk. That’s just plain rude.
Oh god I'm malécite (a native american tribe in Quebec) and I srsly like srsly dont give a damn about that. People can wear the fuck they want if they want to, I dont get offended at all. At worst I laugh at their costume but damn stop being so sensitive.
I honestly agree with you. Like I get it can be offensive, but most of these costumes are for people to wear, not to make fun of others cultures. My school would have party's, and the theme would be a luau. We would wear flowers and coconut bras 😂
That doesn't mean we are trying to offend anyone, it's just the theme and how we are dressing up. I see no one, I repeat, NO ONE who goes around saying "look at me I'm Hawaiian." They aren't made to offend others. If someone dresses up like a jellyfish, does that mean a jellyfish is going to get offended for dressing up like that? No
Beffey Hotdog Because as a Korean I would am bullied for appreciating my own culture and if people wanted to appreciate the actual meaning and learn before casually wearing the same clothes that paint a target on me then that's completely fine but as a person who went to a majority white school and was bullied for being asian it's hard to not be offended when people call me chink or make fun of my eyes or yell out crap when white people are praised for the same things that people spit at me for.
Ye Rim Won I'm sorry that happened to you, but you could take it up with the schools higher up's and get that fixed, and I get what you're saying, but I don't think you should expect much out of a child, I mean I would suppose it is mostly children dressing up as different cultures for Halloween and such, So I don't think a child's going to think anything is offensive.

So following this concept, since I'm Italian I should feel offended by others eating pizza and pasta or trying to imitate a sicilian accent and faking being a mafia associate for fun?! I just think this is dumb, there are greater problems in the world than people finding your culture so fassinating that they want to express their feelings about it by trying to look like you for one night.

Since I'm not ethnically Italian, I was apparently being 'racist' towards Italians when I dressed up as Ezio Auditore last Halloween. Even though I absolutely love the character of Ezio, it would still be 'racist' by this video's train of thought.
Lisa Plambeck sorry I am not familiar with Italian culture. It does seem wonderful by seeing how big of a mark they made in history. Who is that character you dressed up from?
IamK Ezio Auditore da Firenze is the titular assassin in Assassin's Creed 2. In the context of the game, Ezio was the second son of Giovanni Auditore, a wealthy Florentine banker, and lived from the late 1400's to the early 1500's. This character was so popular with both audiences and critics that Ubisoft, the company that developes the Assassin's Creed franchise, decided to extend his story into a trilogy, something that has yet to be done with any other assassin in the entire franchise. If you haven't played Assassin's Creed, I highly recommend it.
It. Has. No. Cultural. Or. Spiritual, Meaning. It's. Food. People eat food from different cultures all the time. No one is offended because food doesn't have meaning. Clothing does.
Clorox Bleach
Well, as an italian I will explain to you something: food in Italy is a fucking religion. If you ask an italian the top three reasons why they're proud to be italian, the food will be in the first three places. As for a Mexican girl her clothes have a meaning, for me as an Italian my food has an incredibly and strong meaning. The food for me is able to talk about my culture, about myself, and it's able to give feelings to other people. It's a huuuuge part of our culture.
And at the same time I don't complain when I heard that the pizza is the most eaten food in the world (and often the pizza is of bad quality 😂 ) ! Culture appropriation? No. Culture appreciation.
I'm not offended by your comment just because I think it's dumb to be offended by such a stupid thing...? While you probably think it's offensive to wear something that comes from a different culture if you're white. I mean. Dumb.
It’s not because people want to make fun of your culture, they actually show that they do appreciate it
Gard ok but wearing cheap fabric doesn’t really show that you appreciate people’s culture
you dont appreciate a culture by using it as a costume.
Why are these people wearing cheap western clothing?
The better questions is, why the fuck would people be so weak that you can't handle people wearing specific clothes for a day like Halloween that is made for such occasion? If you are upset by it, go home and cry in your safe space bed.

I dont like the term cultural apropiation Firstly because If a person is wearing clothes from other cultures has nothing to do with that person making that culture his own. Secondly people that incriminate other people of cultural apropiation...they are judging because they dont know the roots of all the people they are judging (maybe they see a girl with a typical chinesse dress and she looks white but she has family from there or friends).Other point is that cultural is a more general thing that only clothes, culture is Music, typical food...so are they telling me that in order to listen to rap, eat mexican food..I have to belong to that culture..that is racist.
Im from spain and for me to see a person from other countries admiring mediterranean food, dancing flamenco or other typical things from here.. for me that is beautiful.
Conclusion, I hate that term Because the beautiful thing about culture is share it.
