Seeing this battle helps me to better understand how Temujin (Genghis Khan) was able to conquer the area that he did using horsemen with bows and arrows as their primary weapons. Sure there were siege weapons, but they came at a later time in the campaigns.
Yes but even so the Mongols didn't employ seige weapons as much as other military forces of that time. They would set up camp in front of a castle/fortification and starve them out.

He is very overrated as a leader. It is his father who did the work to allow Saladin to have endless reinforcements in Egypt and such, and the only real times he was successful is when he exploited Crusader infighting, which is exactly what happened at Hattin, he got absolutely mullered by Richard I and Baldwin IV when fighting them and only consistently won when fighting weak leaders like Guy.
He didn't have that much manpower, he struggled with getting enough men. This was especially apparent as he had to split his army and leave a lot of it in syria for much of the 3rd crusade because he needed to be ready for the hre forces.
@@tobiasbourne9073 He isn't overrated. As for the father setting up things, that goes for many great leaders in history like alexander the great, yet that takes nothing from their achievements. Salah-ad-din also had to actually get to the top of the leadership, he was not sultan in the beginning and had to usurp the fatamids then take over the zengid possessions to fight the crusaders, though he had luck with the latter faction's leader dying so he could just take it. Furthermore Salah-ad-din was fighting on multiple fronts. He had half of his army with him, the other half had to guard against the imminent invasion from barbarrossa. Salah-ad-din also had to deal with major disunity in the muslim world and was actually quite strapped for manpower at many times. He had to literally burn cities and be defensive because he was so weakened. My final point is that his losses on the battle field don't make him a bad leader. He was far superior in tactics to his enemies, they won battles but lost the war. Tactics far outweigh battle prowess. People like pyrhuss won battle after battle but it meant nothing because they couldn't cause their enemies to lose heart. Salah-ad-din's forward thinking let him cause the crusaders so many problems that the crusade was lost.
@Resentfuldragon Do you know anything about the Third Crusade and the final years of Christian Jerusalem? Where are you getting this idea that Saladin had 'better tactics' against his enemies? He didn't win a single sodding battle during the crusade- lost at Arsuf, lost at Jaffa, lost at Acre. The only time he could win during the crusade is when he didn't even fight the Christians due to the logic of Richard the Lionheart knowing that his short manpower couldn't hold Jerusalem even if they captured it. There's no 'strategy' about Saladin, the simple fact is that he had more men, and even then I would hesitate to say he actually 'won' the Crusade given how useless he was as the Muslim leader in it. And mostly the only times he won during the Christian reign is because of such a terrible leader for the Crusades who became king because an idiotic woman thought she was smart marrying him. Saladin's tactics at Hattin would have only ever worked on weak commanders like Guy de Lusignan, so I'd be cautious talking about Saladin as some great tactician. All I really need to say to conclude is that he won only 1 battle against Baldwin IV, won his only major battles against a terrible and incompetent opponent, and didn't win a single battle against Richard the Lionheart.
@@tobiasbourne9073 Man your comment shows that you really don’t know shit about Saladin lol, he had to literally overthrow the Fatimid dynasty on his own and to control all of Egypt to even think about attacking the crusaders.

Christians say that the reason for the defeat is the desert, and this is not true. That area in Palestine is not a desert, but they want to justify the defeat under the pretext of the desert.
I swear, I get thirsty everytime when studying the prelude to the Third Crusade- knights and crusaders marching in the desert, away from WATER, in arid heat and blistering winds... yeah the Saracens knew of a way or two, to best their enemy's overconfidence and foolhardy attempts at victory. "men. I know we're losing a lot of troops. but don't give up. We're tired and thirsty, but wait! Water is at ThE TOp of ThIS HIgh HiII!! c'mon!"
I've engaged in medieval recreation for years now. Some events will model the fighting after some major historic battles or events. We did one based on this period Hattin, Acre and others when you signed in they asked you to pick a side crusader or Saracen. Well this time almost nobody chose crusader. Beforehand the first day of fighting the officials roamed about trying to get people to switch to the Christian side so the battles could be close to evenish. We outnumbered the knights 6 or 7 to 1 before the begging. So unit's they actually bribed with beer to switch. By the time we start it was close to even. It is no fun to just roll up a numerically inferior force over and over. And it is for fun. I've never been so proud of my fellow nerds. Just outright rejection of the " good guys".
The animation is done very well and the events are accurate. But....there is no dessert in the Galilee. There was no "dessert" heat, just the usual heat though on that day, July 4, it was hotter than usual. So the video depicts the kind of ground you find in the summer in the south of Israel. I live in Tiberias and the "Horns of Hittim" are just around the corner from me. Hittim, means "wheat" in Hebrew.
