    Moffat did NOT need to go this hard, but I'm so glad he did. This might be one of my favorite stand-alone episodes of Who!

    I LOVE the Villingaurd throwback. It’s so subtle but goes all the way back to Eccleston’s doctor

    When Moffat writes for a showrunner, and not as showrunner, he is exceptionally good. Nice he put in the looking for daddy lines, which goes back to Moffat's first story for new who, "are you my mummy?", nice touch from him there.

      Moffat never wrote for classic who, so that was actually his first writing credit

    Such a great episode with so many callbacks to Moffat's own work as both writer and showrunner: the weapon factories of Villengard from The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances; the Anglican army from The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone; the capitalist critique of Oxygen - not to mention fish fingers and custard from The Eleventh Hour!
    But beyond all that, it's just a tightly written, beautifully constructed, strongly directed episode in which Ncuti really comes into his own as the Doctor. The 'thoughts and prayers' reference is especially pointed commentary too - plus we get yet another appearance of the actor Susan Twist in yet another role: is she The One Who Waits? And we also get the first appearance of Varada Sethu as Mundy, although she's playing a completely different character next year as the new companion. So many plot threads to unravel!

      Is she going to be a different character? Do we know the character name yet?

      Also found out the song the Doctor sings ('Skye Bonny Boat' - I also recognised it because my dad sung this constantly when me and my sister were children to get us off to sleep) may be referencing the song the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) would play on his recorder.

    Great episode of the Doctor. Thank you for the reaction. Have to disagree with both sonicsean34 and joshuajoshua2732. sonicsean34 - 'Thoughts and Prayers' is not only an American phrase, it is well used here in Australia as well by religious people. joshuajoshua2732 no one dies? 3 people died, John Francis Vater (Dad), Canterbury James Olliphant (Canto) and Carson (soldier who first stepped on the mine). Splice was a great character, I'm sorry if you find children boring. And as for a Villian, Algorithmic Ambulances made by the weapon smith Villingaurd or if that's not enough, then how about a senseless war used to promote profit? Villainy incarnate.

    I think the AI having a part of the real person is another thing I will chalk up to the magic that is seeping through into the Whoniverse currently.

      I don’t see it as any different than the library “saving” people. It’s hardly the first time someone’s consciousness has been downloaded into technology

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 4 місяці тому

      @@amayadomani2383 It does seem to not be his full consciousness but a simulation of some part of it here, though. I could be off, of course.

      @@amayadomani2383 I based that on something said in the episode, but I was never all that comfortable with the library's happy ending. But I could be off and this could lead to going over a whole lot of instances in the show, so I'll just leave it with I'm probably wrong.

    In splices defense! Yes she’s a little silly in this episode, but I think it might come down to the fact she was probably notified by villenguard that her father had passed, so she ran out into the battlefield, most likely really sad, but then finds his AI hologram, imagine as a child thinking your father, your only guardian has passed, and you have to go onto a battlefield to retrieve his remains, but you find an AI replica of him instead! I think I’d be a little silly and dumb too

    Really like the ep but yeah the kid is off.
    The role is clearly written for someone half her age but obviously getting a 5-year-old or whatever to play the role wouldn’t work but they never updated the writing to match an older girl.
    It's very interesting how American coded this season is “thoughts and prayers” is not a buzzword locally, we only hear it in association with American school shootings, I wonder how much that is RTD taking to opportunity to try and regain the growth Moffat made in the USA that dried up under Chibnal or if it came from Disney directly.

    • @jwsel
      @jwsel 4 місяці тому +4

      “Thoughts and prayers” is associated with mass shootings in America. It’s the empty word response from politicians who have no will to change things. So I think your understanding of the meaning is the same as it is for Americans. It’s a meaningless and insincere expression of sympathy.

      It makes me think of _Queen Charlotte,_ where she says, "Sorrows, prayers," completely insincerely.

    It stinks! Not because he’s black and flamboyant out the wazoo. I love many flamboyant characters, but the doctor was NEVER this over the top. He was quirky but he loved women. Notice nobody changes a gay character to straight. It’s considered disrespectful. So why should any embrace a manly character going this flamboyant? The guy can’t act he just plays himself

    • @SleepyWaffles

      @Kiss_lynda The Doctor is a gender fluid a-sexual character so neither he or she can be gay or a lesbian anyway the Doctor likes people he does not care if their women or men I could not care less if Ncuti is gay if he is good for him his that's his business it's got nothing to do with his character. Jon Pertwee was a flamboyant and over the top Doctor and no one complained then so how is this any different?

    • @anniesharp4871
      @anniesharp4871 4 місяці тому +7

      @Kiss_lynda are you kidding!? What about the second doctor? He was hugely flamboyant, and it is he whom Moffat is paying tribute to here with The Skye Boat Song. You obviously don't know the show well at all, and true Whovians don't want your bigotry.

      What the fuck are you talking about lmao. Just do yourself, and all of us a favour, and own up to your homophobia. At least then you could display some backbone rather than being both bigoted *and* a coward. The Doctor was pretty much totally asexual for most of the show's history and only became interested in women with the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors (and Eleven was still pretty camp).

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 4 місяці тому +2

      Even if the Doctor has a sexual preference, it's entirely possible it could be one of the things to change with regeneration. I'm not sure we are supposed to perceive 15 as gay, but I really don't think it matters a lot. !4 seems to be gay or bi, and 13 seemed more into women but not really all that into anyone. A lot of people think the Doctor is asexual and should be aromantic. I don't think it's that definitive.
