Basically everything you were sceptical about, she was either wrong, or over generalising. McCafe is in the same building. The large range of desserts are mostly from McCafe. There are cheap items and you definitely don't need to purchase only meals. I've had that wooden tray and chip basket only once.

Simply it wasn't popular. I worked at maccas during CYT and you were lucky to have more than 5 CYT orders the entire night even on busier nights (friday and saturday). I think the fact of 1 every CYT order was made and cooked to order (meaning long wait times). 2 you had to order it on the kiosk and it wasn't available on the registers and 3 you had to go inside the store to order it. Most of the items on it got scrapped when we got rid of it but the grilled chicken we still use now is from the CYT days and we got rid of the old grilled we used to use.

Mc cafe started in Melbourne in an attempt to replicate the cafe culture we're well known for, so unlike starbucks who tried going for Americanised coffee culture, Mc cafe did very well because they actually did their research on what Australians love! A lot of people do call it Macca's and just McDonald's, we do have honey mustard sauce and because Macca's in Australia is owned by different franchises, some charge and some don't for extra sauces that are not part of a meal.
Vegemite comes in a little tub with a peel off lid for when you buy toast for breakfast at McDonald's in Australia.
McCafe is within the McDonald's building and was slightly separate from the normal kitchen and ordering counter area...there they have glass cabinets with cakes, pastries wraps and sandwiches...behind the counter are coffee machines and sandwich toasting presses.
The wood board and basket chips was for only a short time and the extensive build your own burger touchscreens and more premium ingredients was dropped thereafter. The touchscreens are still there, table service is still there but the menu has basically gone back to what everyone knows...a year of two ago you could still get chips with gravy poured on top in a box but I haven't see it in the menu anymore.

Matt - do try the beetroot - it's pickled beetroot, not fresh, so like a sweet pickle with a good rich flavour. Everyone knows what McDonalds is - but, yes, the slang in Australia is Maccas and, as you have seen, they have changed the signage accordingly. They are popular, but not with everyone. They do have some "healthier" options here and I think our buns are better and would have less sugar. (Hungry Jacks are now doing Turkish bread breakfast burgers..yum) You don't have to pay for sauce that comes on the burger. You only pay for extra sauces that come in a little plastic dispenser/packet. I have never seen Vegemite at a Maccas, nor have I ever seen a separate McCafe.. they have always been in the same building, just in a side area. Coffee is not awesome but still nicer than Starbucks!

So many issues with the video is what happens with most comparison videos from the US, they are usually about 60% right but thats it. Macca’s has been trending down in regards to customer service in recent years. Now you have a lack of staff to take an order, instead you are expected to order from a touchscreen and wait till your number is called to take your food. Gone are the days of interaction and being able to order from a real person. As for the desserts, they don’t carry large cakes like the video showed and some places you wouldn’t be able to get them overnight while the normal restaurant is running as the McCafe is closed.

100% true re the menu variation. I managed multiple maccas stores for over 10 years and there was always new things being coming and going. There is also some vairiation between stores depending on if the store elected to trial new initiatives, the core offerings usually stay the same but there are multiple new things that a store can order over hte course of a year.
As for the serving boards, those were only used for a specific menu initiative called "Create your taste" where you could design your own burger from a huge list of ingredients. It massively increased the ingredients we had to order but not every store was able to do it. The plastic trays are well and truely the more commonly used meal tray.

Australia isn't much healthier. Maccas is hugely popular in Oz. I've never heard of Vegemite but maybe at the McCafe you can get it on a toasted sandwich for the kids? You get sauce on the burger. Actually, most Australians in my era never drank coffee at home. It was always tea. I never tasted it until I was a teenager and moved to the city. I hated it. McCafe is usually within the same building, but there are a few that are freestanding and just McCafe. The beetroot isn't just pickled, it is a sweet pickling, so you have to get the right beetroot. McDonalds fries are disgusting if they aren't hot. You do NOT have to buy a whole meal. All items can be purchased separately. A hamburger (no cheese and just meat and sauce on a bun) is $2. There are regular offers of cheaper food. The phone app means you save a lot of money too. Only McCafe has the fancy serving. And that isn't common. Some city places may have them, but the normal places are just like the US places. I've never seen a wooden platter or basket for fries.

In America they would call the sliced beetroot Aussies serve with barbies as a side dish and often put in burgers “sweet pickled beetroot”
It serves the same purpose flavour wise as the normal burger pickles do, adds a bit of a fresh tang and a sweet zing to balance out all the rich greasiness of the rest of the burger ingredients.

The thick wooden tablets are only from the McCafe part of it. And your question before, is there a separate McCafe store or are they all in one.?? Yes all in one. Just a different counter inside. The fries are "Loaded fries" with the extra sauces on top which come in a square box, we also have shaker fries which is dry powder seasoning you put over fries in a bag and shake. Yes the Angus and Wagyu beef are on the regular menu, the Angus is really good and is quite a bit bigger than the other burgers. The beetroot, it's no big deal, it's only a couple pieces of sliced beetroot on a burger to give a bit of freshness like pineapple does. There is one video which says it's in the actual meat patty which is 100% false. The breakfast burgers are good aswell.

Mate, like one of the other commentators said below, take what the narrator said with a grain of salt!
Yes, she's correct, you can get those extra deserts and styles of burgers and fries in a basket or on a bread board, but they're generally, the more pricey types of things on the menu. If you buy things individually, they're cheaper. Cheaper deals are sometimes also offered via the McDonalds app as well.
Most food is the same basic stuff that you can get everywhere else.
Even though most stores have a McCafe section in store, if you order on the self serve screens, the McDonalds app, or by drive through, you can order everything on the menu.
Vegemite is just ordered as toast. Meaning if you order toast, you can order it with jam, or butter or with a vegemite sachet. Most people spread on butter first, with a small lather of vegemite on top. I've rarely seen it ordered it though. instead, Instead ive seen many people order toasted sandwiches, which are generally toasted bread with cheese, tomatoes, and ham inside. Anything in a bun is called a burger. So a big mac is a burger and so is a chicken burger. If its made with sliced bread we call it a sandwich.
Most of the newer McDonalds stores do like the ones in the video.
P.S I don't know anyone that would actively say that the word Maccas is a term of endearment. It's just slang for McDonalds. They are nearly everywhere though. Thats mainly just because they were one of the first big U.S chains that came here.
P.P.S many people add beetroot to burgers and salad here. It's usually the tinned type. Someone below said its pickled, that's incorrect. It's usually not fresh, its just pre-sliced from a can.
We all know that McDonalds food isnt healthy, but they do make okay coffee these days.

The value menu comes and goes in Australia. For a period the $2 BLT Muffin was on it all day. The wooden tablets thing I've never had at a Maccas, aside from when they were doing a promotion when they first introduced the Angus stuff. You do see it often at Nandos however.
Some condiments are extra, tomato sauce is never additional cost. And you tend to get X amount of condiments supplied with some meals. (Nuggets for example always come with enough sauce of your choice to get through the amount of nuggets provided.)

There were a lot of desserts shown that I have never seen in maccas. The cake and pastry desserts are McCafé items but they have been reduced to less selections where i live in western Sydney.
The meals on wooden tablets happened for a short time at some restaurants. I think it was a trial or something but it didn’t last.

Rarely eat at Maccas (simply an abbreviation) but as far as I know Vegemite cannot be found there. Condiments are like everywhere else, served as part as the meal. McCafes are usually part of a Maccas restaurant but maybe there are some that are standalone. No seen one. A traditional basic Australian burger is beef patty, tomato, lettuce and beetroot. To that can be added egg, bacon, cheese and so on to taste and budget. McDonalds and the Australian Burger King (Hungry Jacks) offer burgers in the Australian tradition in addition to their regular burgers such as Big Macs (with the foul gherkin) and Whoppers. Despite Maccas and Hungry Jacks there remains many independent takeaway food shops selling traditional Australian burgers. In my small town we have two of those but no fast food franchises.

  • @TheMimiSard

I don't know what McDonald's is like in America, but I have heard that food quality is a fair bit lower. The reason is Australia on a whole has a lot higher food regulations that the USA, so I have heard. McDonald's has to live up to those food regulations, so that is the first thing.
And yes, I feel like Australia has higher health levels, even in fast food, partly because I have heard America shoves more sugar in everything than most of the rest of the world, but also I don't know how common the salad bowls that have gained places on a lot of takeaway menus (not just Macca's, but also KFC and [Burger King]).
But I will note, McDonald's has developed a habit of having at least a few local cuisine choices. Like the beetroot (I am not sure there is a burger right now that has it), which is a hugely common pickle in Australia, and other countries have their own things. I have heard of Scandinavian salmon burgers, but as for firsthand experience, I have seen and eaten a few of the items of Chinese McDonald's, like their chicken burger (a thigh fillet in a common soya-and-oyster sauce) and the chicken rice bowl which uses the same type of chicken, and I know they sell congee (rice porridge) on the breakfast menu, plus selling iced tea, and I believe they had pineapple pies when I was there.

  • @pageup213
    @pageup213 10 місяців тому

The video you watched kinda misrepresents McCafe a little. It's the same here as you have in Malaysia, in that the McCafe section is within the same building (they aren't an entirely seperate cafe in a different building, which is how they make it sound). Also, the coffee made in the store is all the same, so if you go through the drive through you're getting the same coffee they'd make at the cafe - going back to before McCafe had spread throughout Australia (it was spearheaded in 93' but I can't remember it reaching where I live until the 00's) they always had coffee but it was crap drip filter coffe whereas now the quality is near on par, but not quite, as quite a few cafes and that's saying something considering how coffee mad Australians are. I know I can find better coffee if I want to, but I'm never upset with a flat white from McDonalds and the convenience of being able to order it on the go through the drive through, is a big selling point.
Also worth noting: the video is a few years old now, most of the claims and items were true at the time but a few things have changed. We no long have the 'Loaded Fries' menu, which was the gravy and sour cream and sweet chili sauce items (that's gone) and 24/7 breakfast was removed. We also at one point had a 'Create Your Taste' premium menu where you could build out custom burgers - you did pay more but it was probably the best tasting thing they've ever had, but apparently the return in terms of how long it took to make your order vs the cost, didn't work out so they scrapped that too (was great while it lasted). That's where you had your wire rack fries basket and the wooden plank for a plate (they tried to make a more upscale experience for those meals, but it didn't work out).
Actually, I lie, the best thing they've ever had is the El Maco Shaker Fries, which they bring back every once in a while for a limited run.

If vegemite was ever at Maccas it was probably a limited time special. As you can tell Maccas are good at innovating ways to get more customers into their doors. That's a good thing. However, it can still feel a bit cheap if the restaurant is dirty or the hamburger isn't well made. At least by aesthetic they make an effort to go higher class even if it doesn't work out. The wooden boards aren't a thing either. Maybe it was part of a gourmet menu but I don't remember getting one.
McCafe can be inside the regular Maccas restaurant with its counter adjacent to the fast food counter. At least the McCafe counter can look like a normal cafe counter, as in it doesn't come across as cheap.
