The best way to watch Shintaros videos is throughout your evolution in Judo. I rewatch this every 3 or four months and you see more and more nuance and positioning that you just can't notice at the time. Watching anyone that's truly Excellent at what they do is always enjoyable, they make it look effortless. I'd insult him to say his Judo is merely Excellent.
I’ve always trained striking arts all my life but watching your videos gives a whole new respect for judo!!! I’m really interested in how you control the body to settup those throws it reminds me of the clinch and sweeps in Muay Thai! Very cool🙏🏻
I have been a judoman for 50 years started from Taiwan. I encouraged my son, Jason Wei, to visit your dojo. He is a medical doctor at NYU about finishing his one year intern. I believe he"ll meet a great sensei.
@@basedbane787 I managed to attain Blue Belt, but now have had to take a leave due to a neck injury. Not sure I can return to the sport, but I will always love it!
I'm a judo geek and I like to study techniques online, reading and watching a lot of stuff. This enables me to be an awesome uchikomi guy (OK not really). I pull it off against compliant uke, that is. However, I suck at randori for I have learned this without the proper eye for set-ups. Your videos are total enrichment in this aspect. What to do and when! Thanks a lot.
i really like this channel. i am a bjj student but i have found a couple of judo throws i use often that i really like an have high percentage hitting them. one of them is a sacrifice throw that shintaro does often, where i get the over hook, grab his belt, then fall backwards using my lead leg to elevate his leg and make him roll with the momentum ending up on top in side control or north south. great little throw i learned from this channel!
A many years saving , in many places you learnt this after a long time. The only thing I have some problems to get ( a little brute I know XD ) the concept of rolling the shoulder, maybe I do without notiving, sorry for being so repetitive.
Much respect for Your school and also to the people who were in this film.. Respect!! I will be learning soon when I will find a lessons in Ireland .. Great videos
I do jiu jitsu and have kind of become obsessed with it. I'm also interested in Judo now too. I don't have anyone near me who teaches it but I am always keeping an eye out.
Great video! I think i would rather learn maybe 4 or 5 throws in each direction, than be a master of one side... And learn R VS R, R VS L, L VS L AND L VS R... Just to have diversity of action, and confuse my oponent Thats also btw, the way that i deal with striking... I know the very basics from bith directions in both directions and switch stances all the time to confuse my oponents
Great video Sensei!!! I really appreciate the attention to detail you always provide and point out. I really enjoyed this tutorial. I have a question. Can you point me in the right direction regarding a book on judo techniques. Preferably Kindle app friendly? Thank you for your time.
The point of the gi is to make training safe and to enable us to practice our techniques over and over. Once we have these techniques down we can use under hooks, neck cranks, wrist grabs and arm pulls, we can even grip the fat or skin of our opponents. But if we want to practice our throws no-gi we can look forward to plenty of injuries, not the least of which is from the lack of control your partner will have when throwing you, ie he can't control your descent as well and you may get body slammed - not something we might care about in it street fight but very important when you're training. The biggest strength of judo is the ability to practice a technique again and again until we are highly proficient and have the timing of it perfect. Once that happens gi or no gi you had better watch out if you're up against a judo black belt. If you don't believe me you can always volunteer to be thrown o soto gari while wearing a rash shirt. You won't wake up afterwards though. Because they'll probably be forced to take a righthand grip around your throat and drive your skull into into the floor.
i've enjoyed your videos. Do you think judoka develop a disconnect between their upper body and their feet positions? I was also wondering about optimizing the choice when given the opportunity to go into the best foot position to execute a throw? Not only a throw that i might be easiest to throw but one that puts me in a position that has the best chances of not being countered. Jessica Klimkait seems to get into position for a throw she often uses effectively. I think it would be great for judo and for womens judo to see her on an episode. Moe Oye is 84 years old and still teaching in Canada. I'd absolutely LOVE to see you do a travel episode once covid is over and you spend some time with Moe. We had judo events in Vancouver with guests and one day i was thinking the top three i'd want to come would be you, Moe Oye and Jessica Klimkait. Something tells me that if you contacted Moe and talked Judo and one day did an episode with him, you'd be a great to share his insights into Judo. I see something where the potential of transformative value is there for you and the Judo world. Think about looking him up. :)
My twins are mirror image... so 1 is left dominant while the other is right. I emphasize the need especially for my right hander to learn and become comfortable using both sides. It will be rare for my right hander to see many lefties, and my left hander need not be surprised facing someone left hand dominant as well.

Hey shintaro, do you have any advise for not falling when throwing your opponent. It happened to ne and I see it very often when the one who throws accidentally falls with the one who is being thrown
Personally I don't really like a very high lepel/collar grip. It might feel like you have control but you are vulnerable to seoi nage and sutemi throws (ura nage, tani o toshi, tomoe nage etc). With a slightly lower/medium lepel grip morote seoi nage (one of my favourites) works better and still allows you to do almost any other throw. But I know some of the most succesful judoka fight with a high lepel/collar grip (e.g. teddy riner) so it's a personal thing, probably also depends on how tall you are compared to your opponent. I did notice not many japanese or georgian judo players have a high grip, seems more popular in Western Europe (perhaps taller people on average?). Just some thoughts, nice video otherwise (:
To off balance or initiate a technique from jigotie can we have a video on that its like if I commit I risk being thrown, where two people are trying to win
So, basically... the strategy is to put your leg behind their leg, or push their leg backwards, and you use that off-balance momentum to throw them to the ground...
