- Atawhai is seen laying in the grass to the right and a neighboring male albatross chick makes his way up the hill to see her (located on the left). He does some wingercising and testing the wind from this view! Then he disappears down the hill. Nice to see one of the other colony chicks making a cameo appearance here at Atawhai's nest! The albatross pair is OGK (banded Orange, Green, Black) a 21 year old male and YRK (banded Yellow, Red, Black) a 25 year old female. YRK laid the egg on 14 November 2019. Located at Top Flat Rock New Zealand. Chick hatched Jan. 31st, 2020.

Atawhai shows no interest whatsoever, she's the Queen (or rather the Princess, being barely-beyond-babyhood!) I wonder if he's the Hcam chick. I'd want to test the flight possibility from up there too! He's handsome but truthfully he doesn't hold a candle to our beautiful Atawhai (no offense meant, young dude, she's simply a rare beauty☺️💕🥰).
He is so funny as he walks - their instant transformation from almost mythical creature to cartoon character cracks me up😄
I sure as he hope we see her fledge 🤞🤲, it hadn't even occurred to me we might not until I read it! Social butterfly birds can cause heartache in more than one way, right?
