This chick came up the hill to practice their flight training skills. It is one of 7 chicks this season that got to have a GPS unit put on its back for tracking. This chick does some jumps and hovers and then for the next several minutes practices its flight training and wing exercises to get it prepared for fledging. Trackers have deployed on northern royals on the Chathams where 99% of the world population of this species breeds. This season we are extremely lucky to have 20 chicks with GLS trackers in their leg bands and 7 chicks with GPS units on their backs! These GPS devices are extremely light compared to the weight of the bird and attached to back feathers. These feathers molt within a year and the device will fall off. The device is solar powered and will remotely send data until molting. The GPS unit will give valuable data on the location, travel and feeding places of the young albatross. Tiaki had a GPS on her in 2021 along with LGK. They do fall off in 9 months to a year. In addition this season the DOC put on 20 GLS trackers which Kiwa and TFT have in the leg bands. The GLS tracker does not send location date in real time but it stores the data for multiple years and that will be read when the young albatross return to Taiaroa Head to begin to find a mate in 5-8 years. This data is invaluable in that it will show where the young albatross travel for the first few years of its life- something we normally do not have information on. The reason that the DOC was able to put these additional 7 GPS trackers on the chicks before they fledged was due in part to the generous donations to the Givealittle page to help offset the costs of the trackers. Thank you for supporting the conservation work of the DOC /RAC and the rangers and staff. Here is the link to the donation page: givealittle.co.nz/org/otagopeninsulatrust/
Thank you Lady Hawk for your update and detailed info! Lovely chick preparing for her new journey❤ Best of luck to these stunning babies❤ Awesome news about the Trackers..good job to all who make it possible❤ Blessings to everyone😇 Take care Lady Hawk😘

Glad people care about the albatross they’re beautiful birds 😊 I want to see this particular chicks gps data it will be cool to keep an eye on a chick that I’ve seen before. Wow! That is amazing information! Thank you Lady Hawk and so nice to see another chick fledging on the camera. And when do the next batch of parents return to Taiaroa for nesting?
I'm so glad you captured this special flight training moment by this sweet albie chick, dear Lady Hawk. 💙💙 I must say you opened and closed your lovely video with a golden key with those gorgeous pictures. 💕💕 Oh dear!! How I wish I could track Kiwa and TFT's travel to South America on the GPS as we did with Tiaki!! 👀 May our beloved Kiwa and TFT and all the other fledglings be blessed always and stay safe under divine protection wherever they are in the vast ocean. 🙏🌊💞🌎🙏 May God bless and protect our beloved albies and all who care for them. 🙏💞🙏 Thank you so much for this precious gift you gave us and for this wonderful update, much appreciated, dear Lady Hawk. 💙💙 Take care and be blessed always. 🌺💙🥰😘❤️🐥🌱🦢💕🙏
These wings are truly impressive 💸❤ and needs from chick a lot of practice and muscle strengthening before first take off 🤗🦢 I am happy that conservationist put GPS tracker on Albies. I support their efforts to obtain precious data very important for Albies conservation needs🤞🌿 Thank you so much dear Lady Hawk for all interesting facts and beautiful video my friend 🤗💞 💐🍓💗🍫 🐝
What an unbelievable landscape beauty ! And the amazing nature creation , the royal albatross! How humble we must be seeing the perfection of Nature! And how many don't care , or worse, destroy the Nature for... moneymoneymoney .
So glad to see this Juvie wingercising near the camera 😊. Missing Kiwa and TFT ...So this youngster will fledge with a GPS 😮 !. How fascinating for studies 🤗
When a sea bird has GPS and your trusty old 2006 Toyota Camry doesn't--lol. Luckily my mobile has it--not that I need it most of the time. Thanks for all the interesting info on tracking these magnificent birds, Lady Hawk! I hope Kiwa and TFT are having a blast on their seafaring expeditions.
This is fascinating, Lady Hawk! This is a beautiful chick also! All of them are. I miss seeing TFT and Kiwa! They are blessed and living their best life! ❤❤
Wow look at those wings! So glad they're tracking some of the chicks. Curious as to how long they hang around before heading out to sea. Hope Manaaki is ok. Wish they had put a tracker on him. ❤️
I love that they do use the trackers. It is important for the experts to study to know all they can for the albatrosses survival. Also, it’s fun to see their travels! Thank you, Lady Hawk! ❤
Hi Shirley!! Remember how much fun we had with Tiaki and her travels? It was so cool to see her light flash up on the Albatross tracker and show her location! (And LGK too) And we were all so thrilled to know she survived the migration to South America ♥ This year we won't have that same tracking app but Sharyn said she would give us more information on their travels!
@@ladyhawkI thoroughly enjoyed watching Taiki. Thank you for keeping me informed. I kept losing the site. 🤭 I can't wait for any information on our chicks. I'm hoping I'm around to see the others return in a few years. 👵🏼
@@sharondrury5676 Hi Sharon!! You are very welcome! I think there will be a colony update tomorrow so when I do a new video I will be sure to include that! I hope to see them return too - 5 years is a long time!!
🥰💕💕 Oh those gorgeous huge magnificent wings!! 💞💞 Oh my heart!! 💘 This beautiful chick did It all beautifully and you captured it, dear Lady Hawk and now I can watch it again and again!! 🥰🥰 This is priceless!! Oh Look at that majestic albie chick feeling the wind beneath its huge magnificent wings, flapping vigorously, getting the air and hovering beautifully!! 💞💞 Oh those gorgeous paddles up! 🥰🥰 Bravo!! Hello Paula you are very welcome! ♥ Watching these albatross chicks grow up and fledge is a beautiful experience! Now with these GPS and GLS trackers on the chicks, we have additional data and research that will help in conservation measures. Especially in light of climate change and that affecting the availability of food sources, causing the adults to fly further and further from their nest in order to keep feeding their chick. Thanks for watching! ♥
LadyHawk, do you know why they don't use the GPS trackers like the one's they use on the storks & some other birds in the Czech, Poland, & some of those other countries there? They even have the birdmap that show's there travels & they've had them on for years.. Just wondering...
Dear Lady Hawk, I'm late to see this, and so glad that you captured these wonderful, joyful wingers and hovering by this specially outfitted chick whom we will be able to track via GPS uploads to the satellite (like sweet Tiaki, who first inspired my stories for our group). Thank you so much for sharing this here, where it may be enjoyed as many times as we wish. ❤
Hi pjb I am not certain but I think this season it amounted to funding. They did not plan to have these GPS put on the chicks (they are expensive) but did have the funds for the GLS trackers which they put on 20 of the 33 chicks. When they asked for donations to help fund the GPS trackers, they received enough to support 7 additional chicks. I think if they had enough funds all the chicks would have had some type of tracker since they both serve different purposes. As to which chicks got the 20 GLS trackers - we knew the Royalcam chick and TFT chick would get them. They also split the 20 - half were males and half were females so that determined which nests they got picked from. ♥
Hello katd367 I am so sorry to hear you have not been well this past year! I do hope that you are feeling better now! ♥ I missed you! Thank you so much for the 100k! The gps is very light weight - I know that they do feel it though - they tend to preen around it.

This is going to be so interesting. But glad they fall off..
Any feedback from the trackers, do we know where they are located?
