  • Struggling to keep your energetic child occupied? Here is what I came up with for our chore chart to help funnel our 5 year old's energy in the right direction so the walls of our house stay standing by the end of the day!
    Here's where I got the free chore chart, then I just edited it to my liking.

    He’s ADORABLE!!! Lol even him trying to do his bed and shuffling over to you when he realized he messed up was insanely cute. Thanks so much for sharing the stories, because when you see kids just being so precious and perfect all the time without any “my kid can be a train wreck sometimes, too,” you can start getting in your head… lol.

    I loved, loved, loved this video!!! My oldest is 56 and my youngest is 45 (with four more in-between), and this brought back so many memories of when my children were small. You did something I should've done which probably would've made a difference, and that was to wake them up, make them get up before they fell asleep, etc. to complete a chore they were given before bedtime. That is an excellent idea! Xander will thank you one day, but that day in many days in the future. His wife will also thank you for making him into the man you are helping him to become. Bless both you and Nolan.

    My mom had twelve children and we had a two week chart with everyone doing chores, we were not allowed to complain, but we could switch with either one of our brothers/sisters however if they did not complete the job then we still were responsible.needless to say I learned quickly who I could trust 😅
    You are an incredible Mom , blessings to you and your beautiful family 🙏🙏🙏💕💕

    Growing up -- we had chores and were paid with a place to sleep and food -- it was considered part of being a family unit. However, we were not taught how to handle money and that turned out to be difficult for some of our siblings. (when we wanted to go to the occasional movie -- mom would give us money or we would earn some doing chores for the neighbors)

    • @theMennoniteMom
      @theMennoniteMom  Рік тому +11

      Yes same. He does have to work outside of his chores but I was also raised the same. Then you don't learn much about money and how to manage it. This way he understands that toys have value and he treats them better if he works hard for them.

    Great job. It is so important to teach not just responsibility but accountability as well. I could tell Xander wasn't thrilled with the dishwasher I felt his pain. My least favorite thing to do next to dusting. It seems Xander is ready for school. I wasn't sure if you will send him or homeschool him. Keep up the good work parenting. You are doing exactly what scripture us to do. Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 Blessings.

    I think you n Nolan are doing awesome job.
    The hardest part of being a parent n knowing all that you want from your child n to give them is being consistent at what you do. The chore idea is a great one but we must always stay on top of it. Right?
    I can’t believe how much Xander has grown being 5 now. He’s a fine young boy to be proud of.
    I’m passed rising little ones but I definitely love what you are doing.

  • @selinacastaneda5319
    @selinacastaneda5319 Рік тому +12

    Best advise I would offer - say what you mean and mean what you say. It’s so simple but the most difficult to see through.
    Following through - consistency is the most challenging for anyone but especially for a parent of young children. It’s so great to see you working on this and encouraging others. Of course everyday is different and has its own challenges but that’s when the Lord is faithful to supply the strength, grace, forgiveness and most importantly PATIENCE when we call upon Him for this season.
    I do remember how EXHAUSTING this season was but I hate to be one of those moms and say - you will miss these days. Honestly those words are TRUE! We have 3 young adults and one thing I look back and wished
    I offered a little more grace, was a little more consistent, kept up with our chore charts and definitely LAUGHED more! But I am thankful to know on the flip side
    And now My kids offer the same - grace forgiveness, patience and love towards us as they share memories growing up and hold nothing against us.
    We aren’t perfect parents but by Gods grace may our parenting always reflect the Goodness The Lord shows us and may our children choose to be followers of Christ. That’s the most important gift we can offer.
    Thank you for sharing and I love watching and being a part of your sweet family ❤❤❤❤
    You’re both doing a WONDERFUL Job keep at it! 😊

    Xander really impresses me already with his competence! Making a bed at his age is a huge undertaking, but he did a great job and he learned mom might be right sometimes!😀 It definitely is work for you to help him make these habits, so I pray for your strength and patience. Timing is everything, so when it seems toughest, I'd recommend watching him for signs of his openness or energy etc. to implement each chore. Maybe, like us, making a bed is easier to do right after he wakes up. Maybe he needs breakfast first. You can help him figure those timing issues out. Also, it will take Nolan's support for you to succeed so I pray he gives it to you! We already know Xander is a great boy and you are doing a terrific job, but this was fun to watch! He certainly is a five star brother. Lexi is one lucky girl to have a brother like him!

    @jewelssylva3738 Рік тому

    I'm in my seventies & I love watching you, Nolan, Xander & now Lexi. I raised 3 children & I was much like you. I would get frustrated with the fact that it's harder to have them take care of their own responsibilities. It's so much easier to just do it myself! But two things come to mind.
    #1, we want our children to be cooperative & behave when we are with other people or in public. If we can be consistent at home, then when you are out in public they know what you expect from them; & generally they want people to like them so they can be more cooperative in public than typically they are at home. Someone will tell you that your children are so well-behaved or so nice to have around. Say thank you even though you "know" how they can be. 🤦🏼‍♀️
    #2, our job is to work ourselves out of a job. You have to teach them how to adapt to different situations, to prosper in life. (When I say prosper, I'm not talking about money, but about succeeding in life.) One day without you. I know mom's don't like to think about children growing up & leaving home to make their own way. But let me tell you, you don't want your child to be one of those adult children who fail to fledge.
    The verse you shared has been a staple for me, "For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”
    Isaiah 28:10 ESV
    Now days I look back on my life & thank God he usually taught me a little at a time, & repeat... 🤗

I kinda like the tax idea too. It is always good to save a little nest egg. Without God to lean on we are on our own. With God to lean on brings us comfort and peace. You are right, it is easier to do it yourself now, but as he grows he will be a good worker like his parents, and a big help to both of you. Great job, and great advice for parents. It's all about preparing your child for the real world. He still has lots of good playtime. Wow to Zander balancing on his bike! Yes, the parent's response to a child who is bored, is some chores.

    Oh how I wish I could rewind time to when mine was this age with the knowledge I have now! I worked long hrs out of town then and my son loved to help and I would get so frustrated because i wanted to get done because I had to get up early in the morning and I was so tired that I would just do it myself. It made things harder in the long run now that he is almost 18. He still is a good helper, but if I could go back I would do it differently. Hi there Janine... I don't think kids should be paid to do chores. They live in the same house with the family so they should do chores. If kids need money they can do other things that you find for him to do. I always made sure they had spending money and it was up to them to save or spend and if they spend it all then they had to find other things to earn money. I know its hard when living on a farm. But you'll know what to have him do. Xander is a sweet boy. I was told not to pray for patience cause you get tribulation but to pray for understanding.I love watching you playing dominoes with Xander my mom always played with me cause I was an only child. You're A good mom God Bless LuvYa! Bye from Ohio

      Yes I agree on chores without pay. He still has to work when we two him to. We just developed the chart as a means to pay him without just handing him money so he stays learning how long it takes to save up and get a better understanding of the value of money. But I agree. Children shouldn't be paid to work. They need to help out no matter.

Now at 11-24 in ages they all are still being complimented on how polite they are!! Xander did a wonderful job on his chores and it is such a wonderful thing that he is learning to tithe!! Good job momma!! I had charts for my kids too. My son asked one time why. My husband and I showed him his daddy's job description. That helped him understand his "job" more. But the most fun is the line in the job description that says, "all other duties as assigned". That one line helped him realize that there us always some type of job/chore to be done. It's kind of like the Help Mom on your chart.
    I love that you have consequences. Children need to learn that things don't always go their way and if they don't do their job, what can happen.
    I applaud you and Nolan!! All of my children are now grown and productive. Chores did not harm them in any way! Even though some days I thought I would die before they were done.

    My personal opinion - because I KNOW that is why you have a vlog! I love giving children responsibilities around the house. We all live here - we need to take care of the place and ourselves. It is great modeling for responsible behavior.
    I also love that you are teaching him to give to others. Great modeling as well.
    However, my personal opinion is to not pay kids for helping around the house. My husband and I disagreed on this - and it actually caused some distress in our household after we blended our families. However, my opinion is that we all live here and we all take care of the place and ourselves. If our kids needed things - and they were contributing regularly - they got what they needed (ie - money for special outings with friends, clothes, a small thing here and there...etc)...
    If they wanted to save up or earn money for extra special toys, books, etc...we worked out a plan for special projects, etc.
    That's just my thoughts. Everyone is different and that is okay. We need to do what works in our own families. I just found that paying my kids only worked for a while, then phased out and it wasn't "worth the little bit of cash" to them - vs instilling a sense of working for the common good of the family.

    I remember those chart days! Good job teaching him responsibility it’s so worth it in the long run. Don’t feel bad making it look seamless we don’t come here to see a whinny kid. Ha we all know how it goes.

    This is a great thing for Zander. I love that you are teaching him about consequences. Watching him put the stars on the chart made me think of when my nieces and nephews were little and completing their charts. 💕 TFS.

    When my son was growing up he got 3 reminders, then additional reminders were 25¢ each. So a few times of not getting his full allowance he got better at doing things with fewer reminders.

    Consistency, encouragement, follow through and love are the cornerstones. Yes, they know every button to push to avoid doing what they need to do! Accountability is the hardest life lesson. Responsibility for attitude and williness to try again are all important lessons. I agree with everything you are doing! Maybe it would help if he had a smaller bed with smaller bedding?
