Hopefully when you were in there you double checked your bore and piston diameters. Sometimes you'll get an undersized piston or too agressive of a hone and they are out of tolerance with each other. Thankfully in a motorcycle not a huge ordeal to pull apart. Lots of cool projects!

Yes, I measured everything and found out that the piston rings had too large a gap. I didn't check that before fitting because they were with the new pistons and fresh bore... turned out to be a mistake ;-P Good thing heads and barrels can all be removed without taking the engine out of the frame!
After re-assembly it didn't smoke anymore, so I am very positive. The tank and mudguards should be ready in a few weeks and that'll complete the bike :-D

Turned out a piston ring was installed the wrong way and also the rings were too small. Changed them and now it doesn't smoke any more.

Know your facts before getting offensive! If you don't like the British built Indians then why even look for that? Never said it was built in Springfield and if you look for a 1959 Indian Chief you will find exactly what you see here. The rights for the Indian brand went to Brockhouse and they chose to use RE bikes to sell as Indians. This ended in 1960 so there's no '60s Indians, as you claim by the way...

@@andreassiegler2238 Interesting, I have one of these, and when I bought it, was told it was a 59. I reached out to the RE Owners group and he told me, based on the frame number, that it was a 1960. I wonder if mine was a late production, or do you think there was indeed a 1960 model? I believe he told me it was made by AMC? Matchless I think. Yours is beautiful BTW!😊

@@Hawk89gt These were never built by AMC, but some of the remains were sold under the Matchless name when the Indian brand was taken over in 1960. There was a 1960 model, but these were built in 1959 I guess, as the 1959 model was already built beginning in 1958. So there's always a little confusion about the real date. Mine was built in late 1959 and therefore is a 1960 model...
The '59 model had the triangular tool box and the rectifier mounted to the battery carrier, the '60 model had the rectifier in front of the cylinder heads and the AMC-type tool box.
Mine is No. 307, what is yours?

@@andreassiegler2238 My frame number is 9139. According to Graham from the RE Owners club, it left the RE factory on 12/17/1960 and was subsequently sent to the AMC (AJS/Matchless) for shipment to the US. He said it was one of the last 200 made. He explained, as you mentioned, they inherited the Indian name in 1960, and sold them, but never rebranded them. he even sent an AMC/Matchless add showing the chief, but nothing mentioning it was made by RE. I have the original engine, but it’s fitted with a 65 Interceptor 750. It is complete, slightly customized back in the day, but needs a full restoration at this time. I bought it some 12 years ago.
