Mayu actually has a very beautiful clean voice, and she can seemlessly go from scream to clean live within the same song. To me it can come off as this wonderful mix of Joan Jett and Pat Benatar, especially when she adds some grit to it and shes singing more relaxed in Japanese (though her English has improved drastically since the early cover days and shes more confident now singing in English).

Nemophila's drummer and Band-Maid's drummer were both inspired to take up / focus on drums by the drummer of Maximum The Hormone. Hanabie begun as a cover band of Maximum The Hormone. Their first heavy tune with harsh screams was Dissension. It demonstrates Mayu's superpower of INSTANT switching from harsh vocals to sweet soaring cleans. There are a couple of techniques for harsh screams. Do it wrong and you will at some point wreck your voice. Do it right and you can maintain a healthy voice for a long time. Mayu clearly has a good vocal coach who understands this. Revive is another tune that combines harsh and clean vocals back to back. And although they are a great live band, I recommend their official music videos of these. They are so beautifully done and fun, they are not to be missed.

This scream is NOT made with the vocal cords. It would destroy them. There are other soft parts in the vocal tract and the mouth that can make growls and screams. Have you heard someone talk like Donald Duck? That is made by pressing the back of the tongue to the roof.

Yay, my favorite song by my favorite japanese band by my favorite reactor, again! 😁And with a special guest this time, love your vibe together, not too different from me and my mom. I agree with Phoenix, Bon Jovi isn't tame, sure Jon might sound like a sweetheart compared to Mayu when she's in angry cat mode, but I have always liked Bon Jovi. Well, up until when they started to sound like a boy band, I think "These Days" is the name of that album. Nemophila's song Odyssey kinda reminds me of an old Bon Jovi style ballad. I received Nemophila's new album, Evolve, in the mail today, it's great! That album, and The Warning's "Keep Me Fed" might be my favorite two album releases this year, so far at least. Loved the Big Hero 6 reference there at the end 😊 But you don't have to have kids, or be a kid to watch Big Hero 6, or any of those awesome animated movies, which I love dearly 😋They are often pretty deep, and have a lot of stuff and references in them that I don't think are aimed at kids at all. My favorite movie franchise is How To Train Your Dragon, regardless of genre, animated or not. The Alien franchise is a close second, well, the first two movies at least. Speaking of Mayu, I have had my new kitten Mayu and her buddy Akira for about a week now, and they certainly keep me on my toes 😹She did sound like "angry cat Mayu" for a few days, before they got to know eachother, but now they are the best of friends. I just had to stop her from stepping on the keyboard, oh well, I guess she too wanted to write something to you.

Great reaction. Zen is such a killer song and IMO most their songs are kick ass. This is the only song so far that Mayu actually screams and growls through whole song. Usually it is a mixture of clean voclas and scream and growl and they have quite a few songs where she does not scream at all like Odyssey which you have seen that ballad by them. Many other rocking songs they have too where she does not growl and are heavy too.Just an amazing band all the way around. Only 4 members now since Saki went solo but Hazuki their other guitarist is a amazing guitar player and shredder herself. You and your daughter should try some more of their stuff like Adabana, Amateras, Revive. Oiran Live. Oiran is their first original they recorded as a band. Some other cool rocking ones she does not growl in is Monsters,Fighter,RAITEI, Sorai. You two will for sure enjoy this amazing band.
