I just discovered one of the most underrated after effects youtube channels out there. Keep the good work Chunk!
This is incredible! Hands down best neon lighting I've seen in AE yet! Thank you for putting this out there. So great!
Thank you so much, I actually went ahead and made my project come true step by step, following your every click. Only in the very end I realised you offer the project files :D Could've saved a ton of work for a little hobby project, but in the end I am glad I clicked through with you, because I learned a lot. For me as a bloody beginner you put just the right amount of detail in your explanations so I was able to follow and understand. Awesome work, thanks again!
A beautiful comment! Thank you so much, I hope that you can take some little step or expression and apply it to some future project 😊
Incredibly thorough with great attention to detail! Now I just need an excuse to use it!
Wow!
Did you know you're a genius in your workflow especially on stacking effects on top of each other?!
your tuts are a little bit advanced so you don't get as much views and subscribers as you should and deserve because most of the viewers in youtube are more beginner and need more basic stuff,
but don't get discouraged and Just keep doing these amazing tutorials!
This comment made me smile so wide, thank you for such kind words! ❤️
One of the best videos out there!! Im surprised this hasn't gotten as many views as I thought it would?! Great work! Im glad I was able to follow Every step. Yes there was a lot of minutes in this video, but it was worth it! Thank you so much!!
I've been using AE tutorials since VCP's "Demon Face" tut (for reference of how long I've used resources such as this video for learning). This is one of the best tutorials I've ever seen.
This praise hits hard, I appreciate it so very much ❤️
Checked out your channel for the first time yesterday after your amazing Chunk collarts guest lecture and I’m now pretty eager to give this stuff a go and follow your tutorials after I finish uni!!
Amazing! Thank you for checking us out, do reach out if you need any help :)
Will do!!
Best tutorial man🔥...🎉🎊From India
Just wanted to drop comment and Like this was something I was looking for my project i was look on thank you for making this!
PLEASE the mask opacity expression flicker part is just so not doing it for me
For some reason my expressions aren't effecting the opacity. this is my code : opacity =(random(effect("Flicker Prob")("Slider"))
That's quite odd. I've copied and pasted your expression with the Sliders named to match and it seems to work alright. If you turn down the Flicker Prob quite low (like 5) and the Flicker Max over 100, do you see a change?
The red instead of orange could be because of a different theme being used for the expressions. In the Preferences for Scripting and Expressions, mine is set to Basic Dark.
Just downloaded lets see if i can do a cool sign. I will be back to give update
Thanks for sharing your workflow and project hfile ere - really appreciate it - learnt a few compositing tips along the way!
Thank you! The compositing tips are my favourite bits to include 😊
As ever, the devil is in the detail, love the addition of the cables. Wouldn't have thought of that 🔌

@@ChunkMotion I figured it out. I didn’t put my opacity back to 100… thanks again for a great tutorial!
Ah beautiful, such an easy thing to miss, glad it's fixed. Thank you for your kind words!
Thank you thank you thank you so much dude, your tutorial, your way of explaining is perfect!
Nice!.. U have to Continue on this content... We are always with you 🔥🙈
What a bizarre great video, tutorial and in depth learning. Amazing, thank you! Very profesional as well, love it!
Legend, very clear explanations Very good effect.. muchly appreciated 👌
how do you bring up that search bar? like when you searched cc toner
Thank you for the great tutorial, and the tip about FX console!!
thank you so much for this AMAZING tutorial!!!
Thanks so much for the tutorial!
Pls help!
I am stuck on 24:00. I do everything thats told in the video, but i cant see the modifyer with Essential Properties uder my layers.
What should I do?
Sorry to hear that. Essential Properties can be a bit tricky, so make sure you're applying the properties to the correct composition that is selected in the Essential Properties panel. Having the most recent version of After Effects could help too.
Flicker Expression:
opacity = (random(Flicker Prob Slider)
wow!!! I love your work. Thanks alot. ^^
this is a seriously amazing tutorial
This is an epic tutorial. Thank you!
Such a good video mate! Thank you!
hi ! after i type value of the expression mask an error appear ( " expression disabled ) . hope you can help me . thanks
Dope tutorial bro. But I have to ask what is your shortcut for bringing up the search for effects?
That's the brilliant FX Console by Video Copilot, an absolute time saver.
@@ChunkMotion my God. I'm watching Andrew's presentation now. Amazing. And my director loved the neon sign i created for our movie. Thanks to you. Not only do you get a sub, but a noti bell as well
@@MoeDefinitely901 Thrilled to hear that! Thanks for the love 💖
Well done tutorial. Truly appreciated.
That is beautiful work.
hey chunk, great video! helped a lot :) do you or does anyone by chance know how to "turn on and off" only some parts of the sign?
Lovely question. If I wanted to achieve that, I would separate them like I did with the multi-coloured tubes which would allow you to animate them individually.
Great Work! Thanks a lot!
Awesome tutorial ! Really great/ Thank you 💯
This is just beautiful and awesome! Thank you very much!
And a question: is it possible to link a soundfile to the flickering of the neon tubes?
That would be interesting, triggering sound files based upon volume. Doing this procedurally is not something I'm aware of, but you could try keyframing the flicker yourself instead of through expressions!
cant believe i've spent full on hour trying to make this, only to find out its overloaded with glows and everything, so my media encoder shows error 1609629695 (gpu error) and won't render it no matter how i try
drop shadow instead of glow is much better, doesnt load GPU as much
you need contune what you doing mate .. youi have qulaity content .. try do some animation breakdown ..share your work with us .. it will help us to gain knowledge as well as you will get lots of view and support from that ..thank you
Hi, love the tutorial, easy to follow. I just have a problem with the expression: I wrote it correctly I think, no error message from AE, but my Input does not flicker at all, even when I set the Flicker Probability to 6. Here's my expression (parts of it in german because of the pickwhip):
opacity(random(effect("Flicker Prob")("Schieberegler"))
From what I see, you might need to change the start from "opacity(random" to "opacity = (random". Let me know if this solves it!
Hi im not sure what ive done wrong but when i scrub through the time line my text does not flicker rather the endges of it change their "fuzziness". My letters have a fuzziness to them and when i scrub through it changes seemingly randomly. The code I'm using is :
opacity = random(effect("Flicker probability")("Slider"))
Fuzziness is neat but probably unwanted. All I can note is that there isn't a opening bracket at the start of the first random, which would then stop the error when you add one after the 1. To be fair, neither of those brackets are needed for the expression to work (it just looks neater).
Just want to make sure that the expression is applied to the Mask Opacity and not some other property.
I keep getting syntax errors
please help
Do you mind copy and pasting your expression code so I can troubleshoot it?
My animation for the shape layers doesnt work like yours, I've tried to watch frame by frame but it seems I'm missing something? My animation is slowly zooming out and then back in reverted again into the comp.... Any tips? Otherwise this tutorial is godtier 🙌
For the shape animation, I am using hold keyframes so there isn't any interpolation. Perhaps this is what's causing the slow zoom in and out? Thank you ❤️
god bless you
Excellent tutorial! Question. When I use the pen tool to create a stroked line the final output comes out looking like 2 lines. Is there a work around?
Understandable, you can draw this stroke in the Outlines pre-comp, next to the Neon Input comp layer so that it doesn't get effected by the Find Edges effect.
Hello! I am trying to add the expression but am getting an error of a missing ')'
here is the code:
opacity = (random(flicker prob slider)
Hey Lyndsay, just want to check to make sure you're pickwhipping the sliders and aren't just typing "flicker prob slider". Let me know!
you're soooo smart, dude!
A question... i have an older version of AE, how do i do the functions that require the Essential graphics.... i dont have it... Got a bit lost from there on. Help pls
There are many ways to go about making neon light in After Effects on UA-cam, plenty without Essential Graphics. However I much prefer using it since it simplifies the process drastically. Sorry my method doesn't work for you.
My god this was amazing
having a problem with the expression commands. I am with you step by step and I have checked over and over again that we have the same text. It works when I add the code from the downloaded project but I would like to know what it is that I did wrong. The following is the text I did with you step by step, please let me know where I went wrong opacity = random(effect("Flicker Prob")("Slider")
Looks like you're missing an end bracket ')' near the end, after ("Slider"), should be ("Slider")). That will wrap up the random function and should fix the expression!
@@ChunkMotion thank you. You're a savage. Will definitely upload my work and tag you Chunk.
What a legend
Great stuff
I followed this tutorial step by step and I'm not sure why but my Neon Tube layer is behaving correctly and dimming randomly according to the opacity expression, but my Main Glow layer and Fill Glow aren't dimming at all? I can't figure it out, would you have any idea why the other glow layers don't appear to be dimming, even though they are all from the same source comp (outline comp)? All the essential graphics controls are parented correctly as well
That is an odd one. Can't really help without first digging around in the project file to see where it my have differed. If you want, you can email us the project file and we can take a look: contact@chunkmotion.design
Having the same issue. Followed to the letter but when it comes to 25:29, the blackouts opacity isn't working on my glows. :-S
Dude you look SOOOO much like Ferris Bueler.
Using your project file, after changing the open 24/7 txt i loose my flicker. It starts makes a very odd looking shadow over the txt.
To update the flicker, you have to also update the masks on the Flicker solid in the Outlines composition!
@@ChunkMotion i got it thanks so much great video...cheers!
what shortcut you use when adding effects, i have been wasting so much time searching for the correct effect on the list
You must check out Video Copilot's FX Console! 100% free and such a time saver.
Thanks for the amazing tutorial! I just have a question. For some reason, when I add the glow effect it seems to fill everything with black. Everything comes back when I disable it. Idk what's causing that, any ideas? I was following another tutorial earlier and the same happened. I had to use glow from the layer styles menu and that one did work. It's only the effect that will cause everything to just go black. Thanks in advance!
Yeah the default Glow effect can certainly cause some weird black halo-ing. Changing the layers Blending Mode to a Screen or Add can help get rid of it but that isn't always what you want to do. Making a duplicate of the layer, applying the Glow to that one and changing the Blending Mode of that layer can help find a middle ground.
@@ChunkMotion Thanks a ton, mate! This helped a lot! We miss your tutes a lot! Hope life gives you the time to come back! Much love and respect from Mexico!
Is there a way to convert this to a GIF or otherwise export it with background transparency?
Exporting with ProRes 4444 with Alpha will help get a transparent channel! Unsure how well the glows will work since they rely heavily on blending modes to lighten the background. Worth a try though.
@@ChunkMotion Thank you for the reply, I will see how that goes!
Thanks sir
Uuuugh I love this
Hey dude! just wondering what hotkey you're using to search things so quickly (apologies total noob)
That's quite fine! It's Video Copilot's FX Console, allows you to search for effects and presets (and do much more) pressing Ctrl+Space on Windows. Total timesaver and also free.
@@ChunkMotion Appreciate the knowledge, thanks man! 🙂
Great
what song you used in the video? 😂
Oh it's a song from Artlist.io called Proof by Tom Goldstein 🕺
100% plugin free ?? turned out this was a lie :O
If you wish to get technical and consider the built-in effects as plugins, then yes I suppose it was a lie 😦 100% free of external plugins doesn't quite roll of the tongue as well

ITS NOT FLICKERING
Thank you for making this tutorial.I was finally able to finish it.This is my result:ua-cam.com/video/C8tu9BnVBig/v-deo.html
