I also wanted an unmedicated birth but tapped out because I was in active labor and only 4 cm when I arrived at the hospital. When I decided to get an epidural, the anesthesiologist was so kind and reassuring, it made me feel a lot better about my decision. He said that I shouldn’t be ashamed to get an epidural because you wouldn’t get a tooth pulled or have any other surgery without pain medication, that it is a tool that will help me relax and allow the labor to go smoother. I was sad that I “couldn’t do it,” but ultimately I’m glad I did and made my birth more positive.

I think you should be proud of yourself! It is incredibly brave to carry/grow a baby in you for 9 months! Then you have to give birth, breastfeed, and become a mother 😬 It is such a blessing but so much hard work!

I've delivered 3 babies, 2 of which I got an epidural. I delivered my second naturally, and the difference was my water had not broken until right before he came out. My first delivery, my water broke at the beginning of labor, and with my third (just a few days ago) my water was broken during labor. That makes the pain SO much worse. Once they broke my water with my third, I was shaking with pain during my contractions. I was so happy to get the epidural. My sweet babe was born shortly after. No shame in needing some relief!!!! And like your mom said, there's no trophy for delivering naturally. Great job, mama!

About the doctor having to reach in... My third child had shoulder dystocia (his shoulders were the wrong way and he was partially delivered and couldn't get past my pelvis) and the doctor had to reach in while a nurse maneuvered him out. He was 10lb 12oz and 23.5in. He was a natural birth. The only way I can describe the pain is like... I was dying. It was like an out of body experience. I don't even think I was moaning or anything anymore at that point. I was out of my mind. It was roooough. 😰 The healing process was very slow. But I've had three more babies since. Two of them naturally. Somehow your mind does, as you elduded to, dull the memories enough that you're willing to go through it all again!

@@mang0omilk I know!! Personally, I am ultra left leaning, some may even say leftist (pls don't come for me lol.) But for some reason I am so comforted by Abby's channel. It brings me such a huge sense of peace although our views couldn't be more different. I know that even though Abby and I disagree on a lot of fundamental things that as long as I respect her she will respect me.
I do agree with her about some things though, like how nowadays a woman choosing to be a stay at home mom is extremely demonized and how feminism has almost took a turn for the worst. However I think a woman should do whatever she wants and whatever makes her happy, and it is never acknowledged on my side of the aisle how beautiful, important, and stabilizing parenthood is. That's why I love her channel and find strange amounts of comfort in it. She makes me want to be a mom even more than I already do, and I am only 17 (18 as of tmrw) But yea sorry for this long winded reply, I love her channel even though the views we hold close are immensely different.

Second, I'm a mom of 4 and it took me until my 3rd to be okay with myself not enjoying the newborn stage but just acknowledging that and moving on with my life helped me so much. I was able to enjoy parts of it because I wasn't insisting I enjoy all of it. ❤
And third, you have so very much to look forward to. Kids are incredible and every stage is its own adventure.

Well said. I didn't enjoy the newborn stage either. My kids were so precious to me, and I would have done anything for them, but it is incredibly hard work. Being on call 24/7 is exhausting in so many ways. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, it's 100% percent worth it, but it's ok not to have adored being in that time period. Mine are 13 and 8 now, and it's SO MUCH FUN. I've felt it's increasingly gotten better the older they've become.

I had my first baby 9 weeks ago and also was hoping to go unmedicated. My water ended up breaking before I was in active labor and I was just slightly crampy. I then started losing my plug. They checked me at the hospital and I wasn't effaced at all and was only 1cm dilated. They kept telling me that they didn't think my water had broken. Their test for Amniotic fluid was also negative and they were like "you might have an infection there is a lot of discharge present." They were so sure they were going to send me home. I talked to multiple nurses and a doctor and they gave me one more test and it BARELY came back positive. They decided to treat me as an induction since I wasn't contracting much. I responded rapidly to the meds and my contractions were intense within 2 hours on Cytotec (helps to thin cervix). Then they put me on Pitocin and by that point, I was almost 6cm dilated and 100% effaced. I ended up getting the epidural at 6cm because my contractions had been intense and back to back with no breaks for several hours from the medications. I was so exhausted I didn't know if I'd be able to stay awake to push (not that I could actually sleep but I felt like I could barely keep my eyes open. My epidural was AMAZING. I went from moaning in pain and being unable to speak at all to laughing and calling our families to chit-chat. Another 2-3 hours and I was ready to push. Luckily I only had to push for 15 minutes. What I learned from all of it was that it's better to have a positive birth than to suffer through it and have it be traumatic (many don't have any control over this). I felt so good about my decision. I knew I had to accept that things were probably not going to go my way when my water broke in pre-labor. I'd love to attempt an unmedicated birth again someday though.

That’s exactly how my first labor went. Water broke at home, contractions ramped up quickly, it took 15 hours to get to 3cm (I started at 1.5cm), I was in SO MUCH a pain for 3cm, I got an epidural, baby was born less than an hour later. So 3 to 10 cm in an hour. 😅 I definitely still had pain while the epidural was in and while I was pushing. I was able to have med free deliveries with my next two babies. My third birth was my dream birth. I had a water birth and maintained my calm pretty well even through transition. It was amazing! But both ways get your babies here and all birth is incredible.

Your description of the pain is very accurate. I gave birth naturally, and even though I was dead set on no painkillers or interventions I did start to ask for painkillers toward the end of active labor. (I'm glad now it was too late for them to give any!) The pain really is that terrible, and pretty shocking how different it is from ordinary pain. Oh wow... mine is similar in a few ways.
Got 511 contractions 2 days before due date. Too painful for sleep or napping. But then they got less organized... I was 0 dialated, barely thinning and in a lot of pain already. 2 days and a lot of pain later, finally 3cm and thinned. I was exhausted at that point, accepted pitocin... it got crazy painful veeery fast, got an epidural at 4cm. The bliss... then it took a turn for the worse. Her heartbeat dropped with every contraction, my water was meconious and my cervix began swelling. Emergency c section...
It was overall a positive experience because of the staff and I got my baby girl. You look at your baby it's like staring at the sun. But the energy is love...
But damn, a c section was one of my great fears and I still beat myself up about it. I keep wondering if this would have ended differently if I hadn't taken pitocin... and then the epidural... would she be better off? Would i be better off? Would it prolong the inevitable or cost us our lives? Did I even give birth?
(Ty for an explanation on why you were in so much pain... fairly sure I was because of this too)

My birth experience didn’t go as planned as well. I went in to be induced, so already past the due date. I arrived at the hospital at only 3cm I wasn’t really feeling contractions. I was put on pitocin, upped the pitocin but still did not dialate enough, nor did my water break. They broke my water for me and due to being on high units of pitocin, contractions were incredibly intense, but I still not was not dilating!! I then decided to bite the bullet and get the epidural, still waited, waited, waited, after 24 hours only dilated 6cm. At this point, I was 41 weeks and 2 days so baby needed to come out. So I went with a c section. Parts of me feels illegitimate for not having a vaginal delivery, but the more I connect with my baby, the more I can reassure myself that nothing about my experience was unnatural. Just had to go step by step along the way. The staff was assuming that baby was just not in the right position to continue moving down the womb in order for me to push her out, and at the point, we were very time sensitive.

With my first two births I had an epidural, with my last two I didn't. With my third (no epidural), my doc had to reach inside and turn the head of my baby. So painful! I cannot imagine having torn during that!! Bring torn is incredibly painful, I can't imagine starting labor with them! My first newborn was my hardest, but worth it:)
If we decide to have more, I definitely think I'll go the epidural route again.

@Abi Thomason I did have a great-grandfather named Ben. So when people ask me if I'm "related to Ben Shapiro", I say "yes, he's my great-grandfather".

Lol! I have to ask, is your dad one of those people who doesn’t like to use the word “impact” unless we’re talking about a physical IMPACT? Because me too. My high school English teacher was always on a high hill about it and it rubbed off.

Wow so many similarities to my babies birth! I also wanted a natural birth, however I was totally open to intervention if i needed it and unfortunately I developed preeclampsia and had to be induced and opted for the epidural as well! It’s funny your husband brought up that Tolstoy quote because I kept telling myself “moment of pain for a lifetime of glory” quoting Louis Zamperini!

I'm glad it all worked out, even if it didn't all go as according to plan. The tearing sounds awful; I'm sorry you8 had to go through that.
I can't have children, but I had an epidural after I had surgery to correct my leg alignment. I was 16, and I insisted my surgeon operate on both legs at the same time. My femurs were turned in and my tibias were turned out. On my right leg, he had to also realign my fibula, so I had 5 surgical fractures, 4 plates, 23 screws, and 2 long-leg casts. But I thank God someone figured out the method of epidural because it helped so much. Unfortunately, when they tried turning it off, they forgot to keep up on my oral pain meds, and I went without any pain relief for 14 hours. I woke up screaming in pain, and my poor nurse had to scramble to find an on-call doctor to sign off on turning it back on. I don't think I could have been happier when it was turned back on and finally kicked back in.

This is really good information. I myself I am not currently pregnant but my preference birth plan is unmediated water birth and I know myself when it comes to pain I really want it to push it for as long as I can but in pretty sure I would need an epidural but also that guilt lingering over you that you didn’t go thru with it but as you said it will help you and baby in the process so getting one doesnt sound as bad as I thought and thank you for the info on the perineal massage because I too have read on the “wonders” that massage does now im a little iffy on that but overall this was a very good detailed video 💖

If I hadn’t have had an epidural, I would have had to go under anesthesia after, to get the pieces of the placenta that were left inside.
Still want to do natural home births, though!

I have 2 children under the age of 4. I never once wanted a natural birth. I wanted the epidural for the first one before even getting to the hospital lol, and the second was a schedule csection so I had a spinal, which was glorious. I am curious what makes it so that some women want to go thru the natural birth and some dont. The pain is absolutely excruciating. I'm not sure why someone would want to deal with that when there are medical options available to alleviate the pain. I wouldnt have a surgery without some type of anesthesia. Childbirth isn't much different. This is one area where it's not worth being a martyr.
