I am Peter's illustrator for all his semi-autobiographies, including the latest one 'Down Memory Lane'. As much as I am proud of the fact that Peter's lifetime of work has helped shape the Singapore judiciary, I am glad to experience his unique life and perspective through working on his books, seeing through his eyes through my art. His 'sharp as needle' mind has also shaped my way of thinking, and see the world, and Singapore in a broader perspective.
Indeed, Singapore has given us a balanced environment where people are not in dire poverty, never living in fear and the society with a given bandwidth of expressing our opinions. To this, I've always believed 'nothing is free in this world', including the right of speech and thought. Looking at the state of the world today, many nations bear the 'costs', consequences to certain ideals expressed. But that said, Singapore is not a perfect nation. It is one that does what is necessary to steer the country to a bright future for her citizens.

Max, this is one of your best interviews. Prof Ellinger is a gentleman and he said it correctly that expats should not think they are smarter than the locals. I was born in 1962 and growing up, I was always in awe of the white man. Not anymore. I don't think they are superior to me and I am very sure I am not inferior to them. Prof is definitely a treasure and he is certainly a good man. I wish him good health and may he be healthy always. Max, is it possible to have a Part 2 with Prof? I enjoyed this interview very much!

I would whack a whole lot of sticks with the food attached to it even though I was 5 yrs old😂 😂😂. My fav food place but sadly torn down. I resdide in Switzerland today❤♥️... Marvellous video! So important to hear authentic views on Singapore's history. It is so widely misunderstood. And very inspiring to hear that he regrets not learning Mandarin, quite understandable as back then there were only textbooks of varying quality and it was not so clear which Chinese to learn and the simplified characters in 1961 had not had such a long history as now. Luckily now with phone apps, youtube etc. it is (marginally) easier. Still very very difficult. Thank you for making this amazing video!

I disagree. Life is definitely much better under LHL. I love LKY but I love LHL more. LKY laid a solid good foundation but LHL is the current builder and architect of today Singapore 🇸🇬❤️.
When LKY stepped down as the PM, our reserves was about 200 billion but now Singapore’s reserves stands at 1 trillion, higher than Malaysia and Indonesia combined...this is the success of Singapore.
LKY was a great leader, but fugal and thrifty, who was hard on Singapore as he was hard on himself. He would wear the same clothes for years, lived a spartan lifestyle in a humble home with furniture as old as himself. He saved and hoarded for the country, insisted on building up our GDP to make Singapore rich.
After his passing, LHL immediately introduces all kinds of monetary aids for all citizens; the Pioneer and Merdeka schemes, CHAS, healthcare subsidies, student grants, all kinds of HDB’s housing grants to the newly weds, singles, first time buyers; GST vouches, Household Support Package and CDC Vouchers for low income earners....all these monetary aids were unheard of in LKY’s days but they are available now to all citizens . Today’s Singapore citizens enjoy a more comfortable and wealthier lifestyle, all thanks to LHL.
