Hello Doddy my name is Dan Sotelo co founder of onZa. What a great video you put together, a total trip down memory lane. I had no idea you had such passion for the golden age of mountain bikes in the 80s and 90s. Thank You for such a treat.

Hi Dan! What a pleasure to have you watch one of my videos! Thank you!
I love the archive stuff and the history of the sport, I really do. And I’m going to continue doing this sort of stuff!
Never got to own the Onza Ti bar ends, maybe I’ll get round to it sometime!

Cheers Doddy for capturing my Turner/Kona at @13:39 and neatly describing the differences to the first gen Stab in a few sentences....it takes me much longer 🤣 The full 4 and half year build is over on retrobike if you or anyone fancies going down the rabbit hole.
Changes are needed for the show for the reasons you talk about. It's such a success thanks to such an incredible breadth of bikes that a few simple categories, with marking and judging transparency, will take it to the next level.
The board idea is spot on, with 3-5 categories, a bigger and better organised show area, and moved to Saturday prime-time. It's a mountain bike festival after all! I'd love the parade opportunity in front of the judges but I worry it'd take ages and form big queues.
Thanks for your continual support and recognition of our collective history!

My wife Sue Darlow was a close friend of his (she did the photography for his cycle maintenance book) and we spent a week at his converted church on the Scottish border in '92. Really a brilliant designer with a unique vision of what an offroad bike could be.

Hey Doddy --- this vid is amazing, LOVED every second of it. I'm 46 and lived down the road from the Malverns so went ro maybe 7 in a row up to 98, I think that was the last year until it recently re-started. I collected MBUK from it's inception until 1998 so seeing all these mags brings back amazing memories! ... the bikes are all those I grew up with. I've moved away from Worcestershire now and miss the Malverns so much --- this vid is exceptional, I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your channel. I owned a Kona Lava Dome, GT LTS 1000, Orange 222, Intense Tracer VP .... I don't ride as much as I should --- that PACE Copper bike is insane ... Always loved the Klein paintworks and Tomac's MAVIC disc wheel! I've got a few old Malverns VHS vids ... wish I kept my race number from racing the main XC race in 93 or 94 ... it was a green plate, maybe 7-Up sponsored ?>!>!?!?

    Great video Doddy.
I think the idea of walking past the judges is a great idea, with so many bikes there it's hard to see some of them when they are squashed in next to something else.
I think categories is a good idea, obviously the amount of catagories could go on for ever so might be worth making it simple like Rigid, hard tail and full suspension. There could possibly be a prize in each category of £300 for first, £200 for second and £100 for third that way the total prize fund would only be £50 more than the current prize fund.

I loved watching that step back in time. As a long time bike pro I was able to acquire some of Tomac's gunmetal blue Sun Rims Singlewides. My modern bikes just survived a round of upgrades so now I'm ready for a retro build.
Tomac rims will be built into a Kona Ti Score Out-of-Bounds hardtail with an OG Marzocchi Mr. T, (Double Triple Clamp/Orange) and a mostly period build.

Thanks Doddy, a great overview as i Unfortunately missed the event again this year. I feel the mountain cycle could be a great retro eBike conversion with space in the frame for an internal battery. A Raleigh chopper could also be a great potential for eBike conversion with the under seat rack to support the battery, before people scream Chopper sacrilege i was thinking of using a mk3 frame, hub drive rear wheel with cassette and rear mech and a mk2 seat? On the theme of retro 26" wheels my first want was a Raleigh Bomber as a teenager in the eighties, but i actually got a Halfords X16 (i think was the model) one xmas. Which was similar to the Bomber with 26" wheels 3speed sturmy archer, black frame but with red tires with tan walls and read seat. Would love to see either of these at the show and shine next year.

The Brave Warrior is one of my favorite retro bikes. I had two of them back in the day. Still have a frame and matching rigid fork hanging in the garage. Did you know that the chain stays were fork blades?

I had a Kili Pro Elite and what a bike it was. Unfortunately it was stolen from a flat ten years ago, otherwise I’d still have it. That powder paint/coating was bombproof. I’m still a hard tail fan and love my new Orbea Alma carbon machine.

I lived by Greenham Common when the base was active with cruise missiles. We had 2 USAF soldiers join our club and from this, I bought a Mongoose John Tomac signature model MTB. The lightest bike at the time it was made from Tange Prestige, had road bike geometry, and rode brilliantly. Unfortunately, the lightness led to its downfall, and the frame broke after a few years. Many happy memories though.

Amazing bikes! It's interesting to me as in mostly flat East Yorkshire very few people had great mountain bikes. Some had expensive mtb bikes, but set up generally for vanity and road use. Those of us going off road were mostly on low end bikes. So I wonder if collectors presenting at retro shows like the Malverns are still coming from geographic areas that required better bikes.

@21:30 Hey Doddy i was sponsored by Nokian Tyres when racing under RDC Racing in the UK DH Scene in the late 90s/2000s. Had the snow spike tyres, wet weathers in a pale blue rubber and remember the Gazzalodi 3inch i think it was called ?! Good times back then, On my Foes Slammer , Sick !

our pimp OG Doddzy never fails to provide his viewing audience with the best bike porn out there... I am spent!
special mention to the Kona Humu Humu Nuku Nuku Apua'a, I still own a '96 humu that I used throughout my 15 yrs as a bike messenger and I read in MBA mag in '98 when the Stab was released to the public that the team riders were given a different two tone flame paint job

Those Nokian tyres were made by Nokian Tyres in the Lieksa factory. Now the bicycle tyres are Suomi Tyres (owned by DMack) and some models are still the same from the 90s, but also new models. I had Gazza Extremes as winter tyres back in 2000.

Had no idea this was a thing. I put another 25 miles on my 98 Santa Cruz Bullit yesterday.
I had a set of those Spin wheels in the late 90’s as a 240lbs guy they were terrible for me; I could feel each spoke as I rode along on flat ground.

I can't believe Doddy walked past a K bike 🤷. Klein bikes always draw my eye. The colour ways are always a bit special 🙂

Love all the bikes ,huge fan of retro mtbs. Missing my old Parkpre pro elite watching this video. I sended your buddy Anna some pictures of it last year hoped you wanted to see it too. Sadly i had to sell it. Btw, the Kona humuhumu... ,Kona made a titanium version of that, it would be fun to know how many of these was made.

Determining the "best" bike is so subjective because everyone has a different idea. I prefer to see old bikes with signs of use, replaced parts etc because to me it's a bike that has given a lot of joy to someone (or few people).

You are dead right about those Zolatone Marins. You might have seen the 91 Team Marin on my channel, which is the only one I’ve ever seen and my current all-time favourite bike. Also, I’ve never seen that Browning electronic transmission in real life, although I do have the 88 Specialized catalogue in which it’s specced on the Stumpjumper. I cherished that catalogue but never got near any of the bikes. Wonder if anyone ever actually got an 88 Stumpjumper with that system on it, or if the catalogue spec was a promise they couldn’t keep? You’ve intrigued me on that one.

For the new format how cool would a little qr code on each card and maybe it takes you to a video of the owner talking about the bike, its history etc. I know signal is rubbish at Malverns but even to take a photo and view later could be cool 🤔
