Perhaps the cleanest voice I ever heard over a commentary....Great job. Wonder how you don't run out of things to speak. Lol. One advise though would be to keep track of happenings in the entire map. I mean i could sense the battle from the middle so so long back when Jordan deployed so many lumberjacks. And I was able to see the action on the mini map. I don't understand how you missed those.....
Now, Okay. I want you to make some more videos in this series please. This is the best AoE II series on YT mmmkay. It'd be bad if this series would end mmkay?
+Filip Stysiak Well you see good sir, this is actually a break the meta because the professional scene does not use this strategy therefore it could be defined as a "break the meta" strategy and thus you are wrong :^) -ResStream
Once, in bf, I decided not to run my arablasts into walls and towers, and I had no siege onagers and couldn't work out how to get trebs to cut trees, so I used a load of villagers to sneak attack the AOK AI.
i was playing a game against incas the other day and it turns out axemen make short work of them i tried knights at first hoping he wouldnt make halbs and kamayuks but when they got killed i massed axemen his army just melted away
I would like to know where Hideout (no palisades) could be downloaded. I have extreme difficulty finding these RMS's on the web, and the steam workshop is very much lacking.
+Thomas Wilson The forgotten version has palisade walls. Since he was asking about the steam workshop, it is included there. It is, for example, part of the SY Nations Cup map pack.
wow g to the g. great find. JOrdan is my 2nd favourite player behind Daut. While viper is godly and over 9000(predictable not as fun to watch). Jordan is a very aggressive player. always makes intelligent plays.
+angelowl89 In a way they are, throwing axeman damage is melee so the huskarls pierce armor doesn't work, like the throwing axeman suck against teutonic nights because they have the high melee armor. Idk if it would be better to go with nights.
+angelowl89 They are likely about in par with Champions overall since last I checked they have no real damage bonus against them but do have the range advantage. You have to get something like Cataphracts or samurai to get a true counter to mass huskarls though which in turn is a somewhat situational unit in the first place. Most civs don't have a true counter to huskarls that is not at least somewhat degraded by the high pierce armor. The best choice is still likely going to be onagers with a bottle neck for dealing with mass huskarls for most civs.
+angelowl89 Franks have an history of fighting Goths. Throwing axes are great at disrupting a shield-wall, which is precisely what Huskarls are meant to emulate. In the context of aoe2, however, throwing axemen are great to mass up and pair with siege, such as illustrated in the video.
You said you get most of your replays for break the meta from 2010-2011, is there a reason for this? Was the meta not very well established in that time?
+TamingofSpyro i guess there are two reasons. For one, Res got a lot of Games from the Website AoC-Box or something like that and those are from that "era". Randomly watching newer games on Voobly cant be as efficient for Res for not being preselected . 2) Also the meta changed i guess and thats why those strats are breaking the meta from today's point of view.
With the new AOAK balance patch, this Light Cavalry x Throwing Axemen combination has become the new late-game meta. But damn aren't these players foresighted.
I don't think enough people talk about how much cheaper Frankish castles are. Something that comes up when discussing every single land-based unique unit's pros and cons is how it's hard to mass them up due to how expensive castles are, but Franks get 3 castles for the prices of 2, making it a lot more practical to mass Throwing Axemen. Also considering how cheap they are, I get the sense that the developers wanted it to be a somewhat viable strategy. Maybe that's the reason they're so underwhelming as an individual unit. (I say all unique units because I don't really consider team units to be true 'unique' units)
True and it's not only about how cheap castles are overall, but how quickly you can set a single one up as soon as you reach the castle age. The stone cost of a second TC + castle for franks = 488 + 100 = 588. 588 is LESS stone for those two buildings for franks than a single castle for any other civ (650). I'd say it's a huge bonus because for the price of a single castle, the franks get a castle, a second TC and some spare change. Huge huge bonus which I can't see how it never gets mentioned.
It is nice that light cav in African Kingdoms get the extra 20% health so they are a little better at being trash. Still far from top tier like Mongols, Magyars or Berbers and perhaps Turks in their light cav but they now feel like the Franks can use them to be a more effective problem for raiding or late game trash wars which was overall needed and to some degree makes up for the lack of bloodlines. Only getting 12 more health but that can decide battles.
I feel TheViper failed to protect against early raids, waiting so long to wall that left side. As Jordan's eco was basically untouchable, he was free to just set the pace of the game and be really aggressive. Kudos to Jordan for some great tech and strategic decisions.
"Lazy, Stupid villagers..... " the true bane for any AoE player. "get back on that woodline! " "what kind of pathing is THAT! " " WHY ARE YOU NOT FARMING!!" (daily quotes)
i dont get why franks are so underrated i mean their knight line sweeps the floor with enemies and the franks do have the possibility to counter the knights counters i like to use franks against byzantines because they dont have a really strong answer paladins kill cataphracts and the one use of throwing axemen is killing trash as for the mayans i think there is no better civilisation than the franks to kill them they have practically nothing except the spear line against knights and they are best at archers which get shredded away by knights
They don't get good X bows come late castle age to early imperial on flanks, making archers more of a dead end. Also their scouts suck in 1v1. Good pocket civilization.
MrJosthebos bracer is not castle age thats where hand cannoneers come into play and your opponent will be weak in early imp if he even lives that long and between cavaliers with bonus hp and hand cannoneers and god forgive me for saying it throwing axeman under cheaper castles there isnt much you can throw at franks that they cant handle
HECKproductions What you talking about, also liking your own comments really? Let me make it easy for you, if you have a army of crossbow at the point in the game which most players are going imp and hitting their power spikes (aztec as a good example) it is a huge set back to have to research new tech and start over making new units because you cannot bring your old units (crossbows) to a competitive level. Effectively as everyone hits imp your crossbows become redundant while other civs upgrade to arblest adding in bracer and archer armor upgrades. This leaves you at a huge disadvantage as you are fighting imperial units with castle tech while you research stuff like chemistry just to compete. Do you understand?
+SirLaurenceNZ awesome tree chop!!! =D , you really wouldnt expect it because Franks dont have the tecnology for siege onagres, so they cant use them to insta chop the middle.
@Resonance22 200 Food and 90 Gold for pikemen upgrade isn't that expensive at all, and definitely worthwhile. Also, I saw you talking about how to counter Goths in a recent stream and I have to say, you're opinion that Champions are a viable counter is... questionable, in my opinion. I would say that only a civ with a sizable buff (Aztecs, Japanese, Vikings) is really a very viable counter to Gothic Champions, because Gothic champions are so cost efficient. They're cost efficient against Paladins, for crying out loud. As well, the Goths have a lot of other tools, as their siege isn't bad, their cavalry is OK, and they do have gunpowder, so they have tools other than just the Infantry spam. They aren't really easy to deal with in the late game at all, no matter what civ you're playing as.
The thing is though it is only really effective once they hit Imp, and they get no eco bonuses at all to really help them. If someone beats a Goths player, it was usually by Castle Age. Also, you forgot to mention Teutonic Knights? They almost instantly ruin your cheap infantry. True Goths do get HCs and decent siege to deal with them, but that is only when you hit Imp, and Teutons get better siege(Ironclad helps especially with rams getting 1 melee armor). Teutons also have better early game rushing potential with their cheaper farms, they have a great scout rush.
I played a game last night, my teammate took the berbers so my 'main' army consisted of 2 battalions of 30 knights and 30 genitours. then i had my 'wall breaker' army of 6 trebuchet with 28 throwing axemen set on defensive and only ever near the trebuchets to protect them and 2 rams filled with halberdiers and a couple more axe men. it s rediculous how fast the axemen cut down things coming to them. SO note to self do not run into a huge axe thrown at your face. I managed to take out a mongolian and turk player this way with only minimal losses the last remain opposing player (burmese) surrendered when I took out his walls so my cavalry could get through. I ended up with a biggest army of 156 and losses of 13 the talk was how good the axemen were and how surprising it was.
If you watched the vid, Res explained that already. In a Franks mirror match, you anticipate Paladins so you tech into Halberdiers, making lots of Barracks and getting all of the infantry upgrades. These upgrades also apply to Throwing Axemen, so you can naturally transition into them to counter the opponent's Halberdiers. Throwing Axemen also are cheaper (especially in gold), and as Res said, they don't die in one shot to Onagers (or Bombard Cannons). The Franks also can't fully upgrade their Hand Cannoneers, and the archery ranges that you build to make the HCs are practically useless outside of HC production since the Franks have shit archers.
Nice game. I do think that Jordan only won though because he had more gold piles than Viper (top right). If Viper had a bit more gold Champs would have wrecked Jordan.
It's not free bloodlines, it's a Franks civ bonus. Franks don't get bloodlines. Instead they get a 20% HP bonus for the knight line unit. It's only like bloodlines for knight because 20% of 100 is 20. It's actually better for the imperial age units. Looks like this: Knight with bloodlines: 100 + 20 = 120 hp Frankish knight: 1.2 * 100 = 120 hp Cavalier with bloodlines = 120 + 20 = 140 hp Frankish cavalier = 1.2 * 120 = 144 hp Paladin with bloodlines = 160 + 20 = 180 hp Frankish paladin = 1.2 * 160 = 192 hp So yeah, the Frankish paladin is the best knight line unit in the game and coupled with chivalry (the unique tech), paladins become the obvious go-to unit. Franks however lack the Hussar upgrade AND bloodlines which means the light cavalry line of units is very weak for them. Plus they also lack camels of course. It's a disadvantage which means the Franks aren't the best cavalry civ and since they're so predictable in their choice of unit are also easily countered. They make up for it however with significantly cheaper castles.
You don't need good light cavalry in order for your light cavalry to be effective. Once you move past scouts, the Light cavalry line is only really there for raiding and counters, and Light cavalry, even minus some upgrades and bloodlines, are good enough at their job to be an effective unit. Case in point: I beat a fully boomed Korean as the Britons on Black forest by using Light Cavalry and Cavaliers to support my trash units. Sure, the Korean had better siege, but even Koreans siege is bad against the Britons terrible Light Cav.
www.dictionary.com/browse/halberdier Hal-ber-deer Sorry, just wanna get this out, I'm not trying to annoy you, but, I just want the record straight. Res is pronouncing it correctly, but, I guess we can all pronounce words the way we want. As long as it's understandable, that's the great thing about language itself. ^^
This endgame was really "hey, you got a lot of trash there. It'd be a shame if soemone had a cheap counter to them"
Next "Break the Meta" : Aztec Paladin Rush
In the Dark Age
Aztec , maya, or inca in the death match lol
i think those axemen are so slow because of all those infinite axes they carry, nice vid

I remember a FFA where theviper lost his ENTIRE base twice and both times he was pop capped again minutes later
+Based Pharaoh ffa?
+Roberto Trittico free for all. it's a no teams game. every player vs every other player. it's often very chaotic but also fun :P
***** it's an extremely old series of videos that are divided up into 9 parts and it is pretty long but worth the watch,

"I want you to ask yourself what you think would hurt more: battleaxe to the face, or just a guy on a horse?" LOL
+Ready Teddy it was near the end of the game
That was an epic game. Rarely I've seen top level 1v1s going that long!
Im the only one that always hopes TheViper looses? Not because i hate him but cause hes the best player :D
*cough*
Jordan always put up a good fight against him, although he's not been playing for a while now.
I also think that
It's always a great game when the best player gets defeated.

+AgentJonathan Search palisade in your other .rms file and delete that paragraph (code block).
I could have thought of that... XD

How to get AoC soundtrack in HD edition?

Haha i didnt read the name, so I thought one of the players was named "The Diaper".. The Diaper is building his university right now.. and so on :D XD
Oh no.... The meta has been broken once more!! Lol great vid res you da best!
Hal-birdie-ur.
That's how beat the viper. I can't believe someone told me the other day that Ruit was 2nd in the world.
I managed to take out a mongolian and turk player this way with only minimal losses the last remain opposing player (burmese) surrendered when I took out his walls so my cavalry could get through. I ended up with a biggest army of 156 and losses of 13 the talk was how good the axemen were and how surprising it was.
Interesting. Many thanks.
If only taxing was a thing on Age of Empires... imagine!
How come Jordan has a higher rating than TheViper? I was under the impression that TheViper was considered #1 in the world.
Is there ever a time when you shouldn't just use hand cannoneers instead? I guess when your opponent is spamming skirmishers or something.

Jordan would have been better off had he sold those stone. Awesome play regardless
fuck yeah viper game
8 more subs, Res!

irado!
Nice game. I do think that Jordan only won though because he had more gold piles than Viper (top right). If Viper had a bit more gold Champs would have wrecked Jordan.
GG!
Next Break the meta is going to be mongol speedy ram kthxbye
Free bloodlines? Hey that's pretty good.
It's not free bloodlines, it's a Franks civ bonus. Franks don't get bloodlines. Instead they get a 20% HP bonus for the knight line unit. It's only like bloodlines for knight because 20% of 100 is 20. It's actually better for the imperial age units.
Looks like this:
Knight with bloodlines: 100 + 20 = 120 hp
Frankish knight: 1.2 * 100 = 120 hp
Cavalier with bloodlines = 120 + 20 = 140 hp
Frankish cavalier = 1.2 * 120 = 144 hp
Paladin with bloodlines = 160 + 20 = 180 hp
Frankish paladin = 1.2 * 160 = 192 hp
So yeah, the Frankish paladin is the best knight line unit in the game and coupled with chivalry (the unique tech), paladins become the obvious go-to unit.
So I guess I'm the only one who uses Throwing Axemen commonly.. lol
HelBAdiers sounds so wrong ;). But hey, good video! Interesting strategy...
you really deserve more likes and suscribes, AOE2 what a good times.... =)
Jordan, Chris, viper, and daut are by far the best players
You don't need good light cavalry in order for your light cavalry to be effective. Once you move past scouts, the Light cavalry line is only really there for raiding and counters, and Light cavalry, even minus some upgrades and bloodlines, are good enough at their job to be an effective unit. Case in point: I beat a fully boomed Korean as the Britons on Black forest by using Light Cavalry and Cavaliers to support my trash units. Sure, the Korean had better siege, but even Koreans siege is bad against the Britons terrible Light Cav.
