@@IreneChoinski look how his nose goes back up the face with tail to beach at the end of the first turn on his first 8.17, then snap, then kicks tail out the back over the lip on finishing turn. Not feeling that? Looks stand out to me, he’s got some Kelly and Andy and Mick in him from what I’m seeing but what do I know I’m pretty average Joe
Finals day was an interesting study in tail shapes. Toledo wins the day on his typical round tail - seems to suit his approach. Whereas I thought Ewing turns looked slightly better here (squash) vs Griffin (round). Not by much, but the judges seemed to reward Ewing a bit more and eye test goes to the squash in these waves. Also Ewing riding a poly core with epoxy. In a previous heat Chianca looked good on his swallow tail against JR. a few years back (2016?) Jordy won lowers on a swallow.
Griff could've got him at the end if he would've gone on Ethan's wave and did a big rotation on the closeout. He had priority, but chose to let Ethan go on that one. Oh well, Ethan's surfing was amazing, totally won that heat. Ethan might need a bit more variety to take out Felipe in the future at similar waves. Everyone ripping, great finals!
Best heat of the comp. Griff really needed to go to the air....then to air to beat Filipito where Ethan couldn't in 3 to 4' mush. Ps. Ethan crushed it.
No they weren't bashing Ethan, they were bashing the WSL for say that Ethan wasn't competing and they weren't going to replace his spot. People were upset with the WSL promoting the final five with only four. It's another situation the WSL managed poorly and failed to navigate. You couldn't script a more pathetic year but only the WSL could make it worse. Hopefully Ethan wins a world title
Ewing was not his normal style or variety but was the superior power pro rider on this day. Griffin looks like he belongs on the lightweight tour. Ewing with a nearly 9 on a wave exactly following Griffin's barely 8 wave (was better than Ewing's) is horrendously skewed point calculation. But neither waves were even an 8....it's like the judges took stimulants and began overscoring all waves. Anyone comparing Ewing to Irons/Slater or any legend studs is out in space. Even JJF is not an Irons and JJF is on a way different level than Ewing. Surfers on the tour today are entirely weak with a very tiny few exceptions that would struggle against the beasts of past.
the reason ethan won is because he leaned harder on the rail, had more speed and held the rail for longer. who surfed better completely depends on opinion but in a competition it was a clear win for ewing.

There are 10s of thousands of people that can surf this good these days. In real life without a contest there is no such thing as the best surfer in the world. Plus sometimes the style some of these guys have are smelly. Not these guys though.
Is it my impression or Colapinto was CLEARLY UNDERSCORED in at least two waves? And when it comes to Ewing, seems like he's always gotta be OVERSCORED...shame on WSL judges.
I was pulling for Griff, but If you watch how Ethan gets more vertical into the lip and how he completes his turns every time, that's where he sets himself apart. Griffin had to go to the air to showcase what sets him apart from Ethan, and he didn't.
Two great Surfers, didn't care who won, just love seeing the great surfing.
Why would you show the wave scores before the wave is completed? Really takes all the suspense out of the viewing experience
Yeah and someone decides to do it just for the finals for us lol
EE’s turns look different, like we’ve seen John at certain venues
Agree. Worth noting squash vs round tail.
Different??😂😂😂
He did the same maneuvers on and on till the End.
His rail game is string and Nice to watch, but it gets Boring.
No variety at all

Mick fannings brother from another mother won with power
Yewing was ripping, especially after the injury, it’s fairly clear he’s the best on rail.
man the first turn on the first ethan ewing wave give me goosebumps, that is the surfing i like!

GC kinda bogging a fair bit on top turns....looks a bit forced sometimes EE flawless.
Good job Ewing❤🤙🏾🫡

Hard to beat filipe at this spot
People bashing EE for competing “injured” and saying Medina should replace him…

Boy does John John equal turns - soo mental!!

Griff claim every wave was cringe as, judges really tried their best to get jim the win bit ethans surfing was way to dominant
Gr 7:48
Ethan had better style and probably deserved to win that one. That said I feel like they overscored his waves and underscored Griffin a few times.
Ethan won quit bitchinn
BRASIL HEGEMONIA NO SURF 🇧🇷

The 8,93 for EE was overscore…only a 8

Na man Ewing is just better cleaner more powerful for sure

Griffin was robbed
Ethan is the new love affair of Wsl. Being overscored even though is repeating the same maneuver over and over again.
Do it, no one so radical on rails.
Colapinto underscored... it was close but Grif was more dynamic. Ethan's waves were just rinse and repeat.
Na man Ewing is just better cleaner more powerful for sure, griff rips but he can't try beat eth on rail
