I’ve never heard of such a story before, but my dad has told me that in the olden days there were some women who sought relationships outside of their marriage. And I have heard much older women say that they have witnessed the penalty and cruel deaths these ‘secret couples’ suffered. They would die in vain together in public view and be set as an example for all couples and eyoung children to learn from. I don’t think there was any justice for either side and for any persons here. I have a feeling there are way more details to this story. This is a story of greed, selfishness and telling of a culture that accepted systematic suppression of women. A few things that were mentioned lead me to believe there was physical, verbal, and emotional abuse towards the wife from her in-laws, her husbands, the villagers, and little support from her family. But these things are not mentioned because they are hard to listen to and of course, you don’t want to bear all of your soul. In the olden days she was seen as a rebel, a girl/wife of no moral character. But here and now, I see her as a pioneer. Someone who stood up for what she wanted and was relentless. Whether she did right or wrong is not the question of matter. It was wrong to force marry her in the first place. She was determined to seek her own happiness at all costs, even if it meant her own life as she mentioned. And although it was common practice to have forced-marriages, it doesn’t make it right. Nowadays non-consensual sex is considered rape. And I believe that most Hmong women from the olden days, (and perhaps even now, some) grew up in a culture that says non-consensual sex is OK. But it is not OK whether it happened now or back then. We still live in a close-knit community where women and women’s rights are suppressed. We just aren’t talking about it...enough. Why couldn't the family just divorce the murderous wife and keep all their dead son's belongings? She admitted to killing him. A murderer shouldn't have the right to keep all the belongings.
