    You are tripping me out dismissing and confronting all the "haters" with your reasoning for why you are shorting connections to other connections on the board. They see it as hacking and since it was not the original design, they poo-poo on it and your methods. But, coming from someone who has an electrical background and degree, I can see that your logic is strong and you are only fixing shotty engineering. I would MUCH rather have circuits directly connected (or "Shorted") than have an edge connection pin and wiring tying those things together and connecting them. You ROCK Ron.

      People say all kinds of crazy stuff but I don't just randomly do mods to things so since I had the schematics I figured it might be worth walking through the reasoning :) Thanks for watching man!

      Agree sound advice but just be careful when you do things like that and do your homework first which it sounds like it already has been done for this of course but I will always be the naysayers the symptoms when something was made or put together or designed there was a little bit of an oversight worse things could have been done better you know in electronics off in time still be a field update or a change that is done in the field sometimes related with a technical service bulletin or slight modification because of a problem they found after Orwell after the problem would had been ended device for years or in some cases updates the circuitry installed in the field I actually was repairing it on TV once and I ran acrossed this in a manual add borrowed for that set and it turns out there was kind of a working or sleeping problem if you would with that set that I noticed something was amiss but was not causing actual issues per say that that time but it was saying that someone could very well go wrong in the future and that loves gation Waterfield modification or whatever you would call it cannot think of the proper term that was said to be done in the manual when it came in for service after I did that it corrected that and everything did not seem to miss with that part of the set at all so things like that happen with Underside or goose are all kinds of things that should probably a bit address twin it was designed in the first place but somehow slipped under radar or was discovered it was an issue for some reason much later on so things like that are bound to happen and know that would not be happening and no it's not dangerous as long as it can be done safely and not cause a hazard to anyone or anything in the device itself or negatively affect the operation or cause something to fail under some condition Etc it would be almost like adding an extra fuse to protect circuitry that could be severely damaged or destroyed that we hard repair if something did overload or drink too much current for too long or like adding a thermal fuse in series will power resistor that would be hard to get or they could be used to protect other circuitry is that if overtime if they're bitching with currants in the case that a fuse would not have right characteristics protected in that way did that once on something take a piece of theatrical equipment with some sort of strobe something-or-other and no it wasn't the ark line either which uses of Baba solder into leads over the top of resistor soldered together at the middle and under tension. If that power resistor overheats it melts solder opening the circuit if there's an issue but clever but same idea and no I did not know about that technique before that I did that I discovered that later.
      No different than adding like a recharge Mobile. Battery replace alkaline charge from another source not the alkaline battery rechargeable course to to keep memory on something one might call that hacking but not really is just an alternate way to do something just like you using rechargeable battery add device instead of an alkaline in my my book no different.
      Replacing a Mercury battery that's no longer available with a stack of lithium coin cells and possibly a nut or a spring samsora thing yeah sure you could call that a hack however I call it a mod or modification to each is own so the haters out there can hate this but you will be ignored because call it what you will one thing the one person one thing do another there always be haters and they're also all the B people that will appreciate the work at war or things and yes reliability as well in those cases where putting a physical jumper between two points to bypass something that would be or perhaps to avoid issues with long faces on a circuit board voltage drop or other issues how do I know I had to do it before.

      Hey Joe have you ever run across what's referred to as the green death or the green slime or something referred to as similar artists that with maybe on a plug of a machine or internally or other typically associated with PVC insulation in the wiring and copper Subway to do if the plasticizer of the insulation I've seen this a few times and it's been brought up in a host of other video store on UA-cam also about how many times do you run into a pinball machine or another machine that the cord or plug is not original AKA been replaced maybe the original cord buy a new plug as well I can see why on these machines that would happen a lot because of course the outlets would be only on the wall unless course is power strip is being used which probably would not be the best but I'd say but ignoring that fact or opinion in other people's minds the probable reason why that plugs and cords have been replaced a lot of photos for Shane's is that often times I'm sure the outlet that they're using you maybe in behind an arcade machine by the way arcade machines in general and that probably court has been squashed smashed Etc enough times that the plug-in record has had to be changed for that reason because that seems to be the most vulnerable area of a cord is the plug into things or where it goes into advice for failure and also just because of repeated bending over time as well you know like the phone cable it's usually at one of the other almost never in the middle what would have been nice is if they had right angle plugs on those cords or when they change a plug put on a right angle one to keep it from happening again so you don't have to replace it eventually there are times which I use a right angle plug instead of a straight one depending on the application or if I know where maybe use might be having that issue in a long run it can save trouble however some X it can bite you when is Haagen-Daz somewhere that is that is going the wrong way or blocking the space of another plug adapter or whatever or if you're using an adapter Dell horror or power strip yeah that could can happen and I'm sure how has previously with others and also I've got some right angle plugs go the opposite way of others haven't run across this as much with cord plugs I purchase and add to an existing cord but I've had some chords either with a plug or attached and raw ends for installation and something or an extension cord is that the position of the prongs are flipped in such way that the cord goes up instead of facing down also this can be an issue with two right angle plugs in a socket obviously on a duplex Outlet some people use a cheater to extend the reach of course negating the ground pin completely I'd almost rather have them using the day after to do that employee both into one or use it after just extended pession plug what have you and people out there please do not list ground for any circumstances and if there's a case where there is no ground it means it's probably time for an update and to have some electrical work done that ground is there for good reason and is your friend in the case of a fault in a piece of equipment perhaps causing the chassis to be alive if you were to go across somebody else that is grounded that could be your last think touching one item that is not grounded but there's a fault to the chassis and touching something else that is grounded in one way or another Direct Mail contact for a fence and your hands arm the arm across the heart yeah that's why I say it never disconnect ground I'm not talkin to a local Force ground of course I'm talking about a hundred twenty volts ac and of course this would also apply to anything else including disconnecting ground on say arranged connector or whatever.
      I know it's here attempting to remove the ground prong if there is no ground at the receptacle.
      And yes I know of audio lifting the ground weasel ground Loop there are other options they might get expensive but at least you have still have the ground for protection in case something goes horribly wrong I've seen this happen in audio especially in temporary installations I myself got a jolt off a piece of equipment that the ground had been lifted and there was an internal fault and another piece of equipment that had not been ground lifted I happen to test both at once they were sitting next to each other and my hand happened to bridge between them.
      we had something similar happen on stage one time when I used to be on stage crew.
      Also when I was doing some janitorial work I was not aware of this but when the outlets had a bad ground commercial vacuum with grounding cord of course.
      It probably had just happened because otherwise earlier when I was plugged into a different Outlet which was actually in a bathroom because there's no Outlet nearby to get that area with the vacuum the GFI see did not trip so chances are it just happened.
      of course when I straighten out the problem with the vacuum yo ice Elaine the ground Falls I checked the ground for continuity it sure enough there was a complete path from the ground prong to the rest of the vacuum so that wasn't it. And then I checked receptacle and that's how I found out no ground don't remember why I think it had just come loose Maybe
      happened to touch something else has grounded I think it was the water fountain possibly and got zapped that was unexpected.
      needless to say I corrected the problem.

      @EyeMWing 3 роки тому

      Yep. The key is understanding WHY the weird crap you're bypassing was done. In this case, it's because it was cheaper because single layer PCB.
      Further, the concept of disconnecting 5vDC as a safety measure is hilarious on its face, particularly on a board with, what are those displays, 180vDC?

    Got my first pinball machine last month..........79 KISS machine. Already troubleshooting problems and doing minor playfield repairs and your videos are essential for this newbie. Luckily it came with all new Alltek boards and new sound and rectifier boards, so hopefully no board repairs in the near future. But there was a strange humming coming from the machine when I turned it on. Asked for help on a pinball board and the owner of the sound board company told me to loosen the screws holding the sound board and get separation from the metal sheet on the back..bingo!. All the pinball community has been a great help like that!!!

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 роки тому +1

      Some of them, it may have been the bally boards I can't remember, had little plastic spacers on them from the factory so they didn't ground out on that bar so yup that's pretty common on those... those alltek boards are great, we will be putting one in this game too later this week! Love your videos. Keep up the great work. I do have one comment to add about tying all the ground wires at the board however. By doing that, you are disturbing the original "Star" ground connection made at the transformer. All grounds are usually taken back individually to ensure no stray currents exist in the ground wiring. However in this application, it is unlikely to cause issues, and as you say will ensure extra solid ground connections. Great stuff

      @@LyonsArcade The most effective way of course would be to take all the ground points directly back to the transformer and rectifiers individually, bypassing the connectors by taking out the pins. But that would really upset the purists Lol. I have had to do that in a rockola 460 jukebox amp before now. using the connector resulted in hum. But pulling the ground from the connector and wiring that point back to the star ground cured the problem. All good stuff to catch out the "young players" lol

    Normally you have a safety diode that is put between the hot and neutral coming in so that if the lines get reversed in the outlet it will cause a dead short and blow that fuse
    Also sometimes there is a large capacitor that is in between the main line and neutral and if that goes bad and you get a dead short it'll blow that fuse

      I think I played it maybe once or twice and I know I've seen it years and years ago and do you remember the pinball machine pinbot wasn't that the first one to actually talk I can't remember which one it was possibly that was it?
      Does anyone remember the pinball machine Funhouse that was one of my favorites that in The Addams Family.
      Every so often I'd work on a pinball machine for someone I knew enough to fix them typically would be someone that would have one at home.
      Sometimes it's just a quick fix you know like a stuck button or maybe just a bad contact somewhere or bad switch or tilt tilting for no reason yeah sometimes the wire would be broken off and have the touch until the machine or Subway try to disable the tilt Eduardo permanently tilting it they had the wire tied off to the ring contact on a tilt mechanism but the wire had not been insulated or cut clean off on the end and it was resting on that completing the circuit until the machine basically doing the opposite of what they wanted to do but would just happen occasionally and I saw that I'm like I bet you that might be the problem and sure enough it was.
      I once saw disarm pinball machine once and a couple other things for every single fuse in the thing was blown one thing I know that it occurred to don't know what I do know there was a power surge in one case.
      But the Earth One I was scratch my head to this day did all the tests in the world but couldn't find a reason for it then one time it was just one thing causing something else causing something else cousin somewhere else Cascade failure with all those voltages related in one way or another to Marshalls of the equipment. And I do know one time what causes a situation like that for sure was a crowbar circuit there was an issue where some way at plug something into a higher line voltage when testing it which was their fault actually wrong plug on their chest setup and also was not falling his old test procedures when using his self-made equipment AKA it was plugged into the variable output is that could output voltage in excess of line voltage with a very controlling land same type of receptacle is on the other side of course but labeled as such but he pointed into the wrong one very Act was set at a very high voltage compared to what the line voltage from the Wimpy and that apple is enabled when I turned on the juice thus and yes old school linear power supply equals acceptable to join the output which means you trip all the crowbar circuit simultaneously blowing every fuse also since it happened instantaneously it was enough to Blow The Wind Fierce as well but that's one in a million.

The nearest arcade... well, a skating rink actually... that had one was 20 miles away, so I only got to play it when the youth group took a field trip to that skating rink. (Instead of skating, I'd blow my money on pinball.) As far as the playfield wear, I sort of agree with the owner... as long as it isn't too extreme, I'd leave it. Sometimes the patina tells part of the machine's story. Another pin that I have especially fond memories of is Stern's _Meteor,_ which also came out in 1979. Have you ever worked on one of those?

      Yes totally agree my theory is the warning that jumper is there on the wiring harness jumping those two pins on that connector may not be a safety thing at all what I'm thinking is it's possible that that may be used for test purposes or perhaps in another system that the following pool is provided off board by another bored or directly from a power supply since these boards are used in multiple machines they may have designed it in such a way that the Bible could be supplied from a different board or from a power supply itself.
      From the quick glance at it when you're going through it it almost looks like when that connector is disconnected the five vowels is completely separated from the floor voltage regulator circuit radio which would theoretically allow if the wiring harness was slightly different and didn't have the jumper instead having a wire feeding 5 volts going to the pain that is not connected to the voltage regulator circuitry on the output for the 5 volts.
      And that is that other pain could be in input for a 5-volt from another board or such as I'd said either or that could be for test purposes perhaps a door troubleshooting when you got bubbles available but you don't have it connected to the original power supply I've seen other things designed it like that for this reason and other equipment not gaming or pinball or anything but just in general in electronics especially something that would be modular that's designed to fit more than one device or be your 411 purpose in other products Etc.
      At first I thought maybe that was something to do with making sure is that if the power was disconnected there would no be no input into the logic side of things which may also be a reason but of course there would not be any power already until I actually saw what was going on when you brought in the schematic because of some types of logic in such if power is not applied but logic signals are you can have a big big problems if you apply inputs without Logic power that is nothing go into it but it was a thought at first but I don't think that's why that still in there in this case.
      Just putting in my two dollars into that not to sense because you know a lot more than that.:-)

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 роки тому +2

      ElGatoLoco698 is correct, we use three different clear coatings, there's triple thick which is a clear coat spray paint that's really thick. We use it to seal backglasses that have paint flaking off, the thicker paint works like glue and holds the chips in place helping seal them back to the backglass. Regular paint doesn't work as good because it's thinner.
      Then we also use clear coat spray paint on the playfield, to protect the paint by basically putting a coating of paint over the top of it. You don't want to use Triple Thick for this because Triple Thick is a product for pottery and dries softer than regular spray paint. So it can be scratched easier and won't hold up as well on a playfield where a ball is rolling over it.
      Finally, we put wax on top of the clear coat on the playfields, just as an extra protective layer on even the clearcoat, and because it looks pretty :)

      @@LyonsArcade hey there not something with the Fluke meter :-( but it involves use of it sort of actually does :-) have you ever brought up about usually with a bridge or a diode fails that will usually be shorted at times is likely failure mode for diodes and or a portion of a bridge rectifier AKA full Bridge rectifier it seems most of the time they will will fail short it however I have occasionally run across an open diode or a bridge rectifier that has one of the four diodes open instead of shorted as a failure mode although I'm sure you probably don't run into half Bridge rectifier so much they're the ones three terminals essentially half a bridge rectifier full wave 104 diodes although you have Ashley seen this at least in that configuration but not a half Bridge rectifier producing this that crane game that used a common wire and 2 are there wires with a positive and negative voltage from the power supply but again I don't think you would run across half Bridge ones much at least in your line of things so don't stand me a jukebox baby don't know.
      Nope I'm not talkin about a tube top amplifier for a jukebox having a half wave Bridge rectifier and two windings on a Transformer and its Center tap this is something altogether different in the sense of with diodes is what I'm referring to yeah those tubes are diodes in a way but and not going to be used as diodes like in just a power supply for a pinball or whatever as I say it diodes have jumper in v they want to become a solid jumper wire so when they go out they want to become a jumper which is often dish fell short circuit which is a lot of times I found that that is one of the things I would check first if there's a blown fuse in something is check direct deposits unsane EBT 10% or so the time maybe more it may be a bad rectifier that blew a fuse or trips observe overload device or opened up a resistor that was acting as a fuse either intentionally or not and yes I saw the Carnage on that one board where that resistor had torched apron circuit board I think it was in a monitor on an arcade cabinet if I'm not mistaken seen something like that before but in something else short circuit after the resistors which were just acting to limit current but nothing else glowing preventing that from happening it doesn't help when the fuse before that 24 power supply had been replaced with one that was at least maybe what three to five times the rating of the original and yes I've seen that happened on your channels that people replace fuses with one that's way overrated I'm not talking about half amp or an amp in some cases almost double.
      Especially when the writing of the fuse is printed right next to the fuse holder worst is when somebody sticks of bowls or a piece of wire or foil around a fuse or Worse even or at least could be Widowmaker in the case of these glass fuses a 22 cartridge yep I've seen it before and worse!

Long time ago I gave it or sold it to someone else when I move I knew really that someone else probably good to have more years for it to me since I would not have a shop where I was moving.

      Yep me again when you're talkin about those mods the D-League of the grounds redundant grounding or the common ground or the common in many cases would be a good idea to reduce resistance bad connections Etc and so forth but in some cases grounding like that haphazardly can cause issues not likely probably with that in this case.
      Who bought in some cases redundant grounding can be a bad idea and not a good design practice but that is take it with a grain of salt because it would need to be a case-by-case basis and some circuitry tolerate it no problem but in specific circumstances that can cause other issues then again something like this go for it just more reliable as you have said before even in other videos. And that's why you made the most acacian is high reliability but I thought I would just bring it up about redundant grounds causing issues as well for other people that may be working on other time equipment that that could be an issue and also things go for like Star grounding reduce impedance and coupling and other things like that and of course ground loops can being a big issue in some cases anyone has tried to hook up multiple devices for audio and get the what I call hum of death because of a ground Loop that drives you nuts oh yeah that's the thing.

      I half expected you to say Common Ground folks common ground or something similar it's just like when you eat different foods versus have Lida Foods intermix before you eat them it all goes to the same place in this case backs the same ground please see earlier comments for exceptions to this and other things related to this

    Awesome work. I wish I could afford a stand up arcade machine that did a dozen of the classics, like Donkey Kong and Pac Man, Dig Dug, Galaga, etc..
    I know there is a way to make a Pi that does this, but I really love the old classic cabinets.
    I used Amazon link to get the Double Thick
    Jeff, what a moron. WHY ? WHY DID HE SEND A D*** PIC ?
    What is wrong with guys. If I were rich, there is no way I would let anyone have a photo of me nude.
    NO WAY.

    Love your vids Guys! Just thought I would elicit any help and additional common sense anyone could gleen my way ... I have the same Kiss Bally pinball machine and I want to take the back glass (only) with me to an event to have Ace Frehley sign it. The back glass is in really good shape and I'm just concerned I'll break it/cause damage to it -- hot car, etc). Does anybody have any suggestions as far transporting it in my car (do's & dont's). tlTrying to think of every common sense thing I can think of to keep it safe and to transport it directly back to the car after he signs it so it doesn't get broken. Nervous wreck!!! It will of course be in the dead heat of summer! Yikes. The venue is about 1 hour away each way for me. Thanks so much for any guidance suggestions warnings yada yada yada I appreciate it!!!!

      You won't have any problems, just wrap it in a blanket or something and put it in the car, they're a lot more resilient than you think they are! It'll make it in 1 piece, no problem. The ones that have damage it's from years of abuse, not a few hours of careful handling :)

      Don't get too close to the screen! BTW you should have seen the 'dangerous' real life stuff we were doing yesterday (Sunday). If people thought a little jumper wire was dangerous they have no idea, lol.

  • @EsotericArctos

    Seriously who was the idiot that said the 5volt modification was dangerous? It was never designed as a "Safety Feature". It was just to test/prove there was 5Volts going to the other boards. Some people are complete idiots. As you said, leaving the connector off disconnects all power anyway. I think, like on your schematic, on most machines it is purely a jumper wire and not actually used to monitor other boards. Actually, thinking about it, there probably isn't an easy way on the board to get a trace there given everything else on the board, so it is likely used to work around that as well. Definitely not safety.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 роки тому +1

      Yes I think they did it because they couldn't get a trace to it so they just jumpered it off the connector... which wouldn't be a problem really on a new machine and they only really wanted these to last a couple years. Then here comes me 40 years later, and we want to make sure there's no resistance anywhere so we jumper around that little wire off the connector just to make sure everythings nice and tight and conductive, don't want our voltages having different levels on different boards if we can help it :)
      I wouldn't have really called the guy out like that because I get like, literally, 10 complaints a day about something or the other, but he kept telling me I was being dangerous, on 3 different videos so I felt it was worth looking through the schematics in detail. It's not even my 'mod', I just follow pinrepair.com. Thank you for watching Brendan, I appreciate it!
