  • Even though I used it for many years, I don't use HSS anymore and you shouldn't either for various reasons I go over in this video.

    When I started photography here in Brazil (only 2 years ago) I had this issue with my flash and didn't know what was happening... The light just got weaker and I had no idea what the problem was. There were no videos on youtube covering the HSS loss of power on flashes. I couldn't find anything in portuguese and your channel was one of the first to cover this topic. Bigger lights are still expensive here in Brazil. I work with speelights, so knowing how to use ND filters is essential to my work. Thank you.

      ND filters. Specifically the ones that go over the sensor by STC Optics.

    Do you prefer to use the bare bulb or fresnel head when shooting outside with the AD200 pro? I heard the fresnel head amps up the power by almost a stop, but the light spread is not as nice as the bare bulb. I'm wondering if there is still a noticeable difference in the light spread when utilizing the SMDV flip double diffused soft box as a modifier?

    Hey Francisco I’m trying to use hss on my Sony a7rv but I’m having trouble passing the native hss 1/250 . Very frustrating. I’m using the new r2 nano transmitter. Not sure if I need to do something on the camera or what .. because on my ad400 strobe it fires on manual mode and I have the hss z press and I just can’t pass 1/250 please help any idea why?

    Do you use variable ND filters or non variable ND filters (3 stop or 6 stop etc) would totally love a video on how you use ND filters, the pros/cons etc, thanks for your time! Appreciate it!

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  11 місяців тому +1

      I use non variable ones that go over my camera's sensor. It's so easy to swap the 6 stop I use often to the 4 stop if I need less ND strength in case a cloud comes over the sun or if I decide to go into the shade. If I need to remove the ND altogether it takes seconds with the ones I use from STC Optics.

    If we want to disable HSS, can we just turn it off on the remote only? Or do we also need to turn it off on the light itself?

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  Рік тому

      You can either turn it off on the transmitter or simply just stay within the regular flash sync speeds.

    • @Pikmeir
      @Pikmeir Рік тому

      @@fjhphoto With my AD200, when I go under the flash sync speed using an ND filter I think it still fires HSS. This is because it will still overheat during shooting, which I think is due to HSS.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  Рік тому +1

      @@Pikmeirevery light can overheat. It depends on how rapidly you're firing the light and the temperature in which you're shooting. For you to make sure HSS is disabled make sure you have it off on your transmitter.

    it's almost impossible to focus with ND using DSLR 🤪 (handheld, without a tripod, wide aperture)

    Here's why I don't use ND filters and much prefer HSS. I like to shoot wide open and only wide open, at f/1.8 on my 135mm and 28mm lenses. During an outdoor photoshoot if I move to a different location where the ambiant light is brighter, or the clouds move and the sun suddenly gets brighter, now I'm getting more light in my sensor. I don't want to stop down my lens because as mentioned I really want to stay at f/1.8 for that maximum bokeh. I can't reduce my shutter speed because I'm already at max sync speed (1/250 sec). If I'm *not* using HSS my only option to reduce the ambiant is to change the ND filter to a stronger one. This adds an extra step and I find gets in the way of the shooting process. If the ambiant changes again and I want to maintain that ambiant then I need to change ND filter again. If I'm using HSS instead, I can just change the shutter speed. Flash power was never an issue for me since I'm using an AD600BM, unless I'm shooting under a bright midday sun. Portability isn't an issue either since I'm using a cart to move around from location to location. Yes, there is the variable ND option, but when you get to the 5-6 stop range, variable NDs pretty much all have comprises. Either vignetting or color cast. Being a purist, I don't want to deal with either of these since I already have a more convenient option: HSS.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  11 місяців тому +1

      Totally agree. Much more convenient to use HSS.

      Or just get slot in ND filters. Literally takes me less time to change a fixed stop ND that slots in between lens and body than it does to change a lens. Of course this only works if you are using DSLR glass on a mirrorless body.

    • @vincentroy5093
      @vincentroy5093 11 місяців тому

      @@ltshinta thanks for the reply. Why does it only work with DSLR glass on a mirrorless body?

    • @ltshinta
      @ltshinta 11 місяців тому +1

      @@vincentroy5093 because you can only use a slot in ND if using an adaptor to adapt non mirrorless glass onto a mirrorless body due to the flange difference.

    Informational video but I wish you touched more on the nd filter aspect of why you don’t use HsS. Felt more like you focused on reasons of how much power you lose with hss and why you don’t use it rather than talking about your alternative solution with nd filters

    There's a question I never see people recommending ND filters over HSS addressing. Without HSS, you're limited to a physical shutter speed of up to 1/250, or as low as 1/125 for some cameras (like the medium format GFX system). Especially for the latter, any significant motion in the models (such as looking around, flipping hair, and walking through the frame to add a sense of movement to the images) won't be frozen. You're in essence sacrificing sharpness (via the introduction of slight motion blur) for the ability to carry around smaller strobes, which I suppose some may be alright with. Am I misunderstanding something?
    Personally, I don't mind changing filters to reduce the total light output (though this does degrade autofocus speed too). I'd be perfectly happy shooting with NDs for cameras with sync speeds of 250 and faster. But shooting portraits where the subject is unintentionally blurry sounds like a dealbreaker to me.
    EDIT: I should clarify my question only concerns outdoor OCF images, as most viewers of this channel will likely be interested in. Indoors, the flash duration is all that matters, and lower sync speeds are irrelevant.

    Photographer: I do not want to use HSS because the flash loses 1/2 of its power
    Also photographer: I am going to put an ND3 filter on my lens (sensor) so now ONLY 1/8 of the flashpower goes to the sensor.
