You posted logs showing what happened, or witnesses would respond, maybe previous issues would be reported, and that player was cut off. Nobody would group with them, nobody would buy or sell with them, they couldnt do anything. And in that game, very few classes could solo past low levels. Being confirmed as belonging on the list meant starting over from scratch and PRAYING nobody figured out you used to be KillStealNinjaLad69420 or else now this character was also isolated by the whole server. And it took a LONG time to max your level back then so that could be months of investment gone because you decided it would be funny to train noobs all day with high level monsters you dragged clear across the zone.

Similar thing happened to me few years ago during Conan Exiles. Was running away from this spider when two other players jumped in and saved me, treated me real good they did and even asked if i wanted to join their clan. For those that don't know when you join a clan in Conan, all the stuff you have, your buildings, material, everything except what you have on you at the time becomes the property of the clan. I wake up next day finding myself out of the clan and all my stuff and my castle is no longer mine. I was carrying my best stuff but i was locked inside my now former home so only way to escape was to kill myself and spawn naked elsewhere. Really destroyed Conan for me and haven't touched it since.
Zek server I take it? or just general corpse runs? I do love that the community was generally very helpful though, so many times got a surprise Rez from a cleric that happened to run past my corpse saving me a run.
@@Csarci Yeah I was on Errolisi Marr back in the day, and people were really nice and friendly for sure. o_O Heck, when I was busy doing non game stuff, I would often just sit in low level areas and provide protection from trains, or buff people. The thing about EQ is if/when this happened, you could count on every member of your Guild to actively hunt this type of player out of existence. You didn't pull this kind of crap on Zek unless you were ready to reap the rewards! There were only a couple of instances where this exact scenario played out. You'd let the guild know, then if they didn't hammer this dirtbag in 60 minutes, we'd /shout in general with a bounty on their head. You NEVER backstabbed someone in a pickup group as this was ALWAYS a 'cease fire' for 10 minutes after the group disbanded.
Not in the same vein here but a friend of mine used to play City of Heroes when it was still out and usually played this buffed out Cold Power hero. Once when he was in a PvP zone for a mission, somebody decided he needed harassing and despite saying, "Dude, could you lay off? I'm here for the mission," the guy wouldn't quit. So James finished his mission and then turned his attention to the player. James' build wasn't made for massive damage--it was made for immobilizing groups of people with damage over time. So this guy gets frozen in place and is being slowly killed by the various weak-to-mid attacks James had. It took a while. I'm sure it was extremely frustrating to the other player because James had min-maxed his character to make sure when one hold was ending, another would begin. The dude simply couldn't do anything. Anyway, I wanted to share because James died about two weeks ago and he would love to know I spread the word of his absolute hatred for folks like this and the lengths he'd go to draw out their frustration in learning, "I may have screwed with the wrong person." LOL
All jokes aside back in the day this really was a serious offense, personally witnessed people getting publicly shamed off of games for breaking sacred oaths like this lol
I kind of miss the days of the players self policing bad behavior. One of the games I played if you did something bad enough, like say rob the guild bank/storage, even if it was just some easy to replace crap you would get black listed. Not just from that guild, from pretty much every guild on the server. Only way to get around it was to delete all your characters and start fresh, but one way or another people always got found out and would just get black listed again.
Can't do that now. Griefers and other assholes are protected because to share their name/shame them is considered "doxing" by a lot of sites like reddit etc...
This...this is how you communicate without using words. I understood every single thing Alan conveyed. The battle scenes just get better and better. The armor Ben is wearing is actually awesome too
This is so sad. I thought it would've had a wholesome ending when Alan gives him a healing potion, having remorse for his actions and apologizes by crouching.
Nah, that would be so unrealistic as to be laughably unbelievable. VLDL couldn't do that without breaking the narrative immersion of the skit and creating a moment of unintended humor (due to showing a player doing something that most never would--demonstrating compassion/empathy and positive listening skills).
@@erichanson3369 I get why they didn't go that route with the skit, but it's not that unrealistic in my experience. I had similar things happen in Rust many times. I got raided by furries one time and their leader snuck back in without their group before I logged on and left me a note saying how they felt bad because my base was beautiful and homey, and after that the furries regularly helped me out with some high-end blueprints I was far, far from getting. I've had people take me down and then stand guard over my gear so I could get back to it, or they take it and meet me to give it back, etc. Not usually... but it happens.

That and the stupid guards sketch where Rowan's character breaks character for just a minute to deliver a chilling speech to Ben, who'd just murdered his mates.
I used to do this in DAOC, I'd invade Midgard and be level 50 and I'd hunt and grief all the level 1 to level 10 players. For literally DAYS. They did the same to us, of course. It was part of the game. A true PVP game where you can reach pretty much all enemy lands if you set your mind to it.
There was a guy I met in Ultima Online. I lived in Felucca Swamp, south of Trinsic. I was exhausted and wanted to sleep, but a monster got me when I teleported home. I ran out of the area to find an NPC healer, and found a player. I had him rez me and follow me home to protect me so I could re-loot my corpse. He was getting attacked by monsters and not doing well himself, and demanded I "friend" him to my house so he could come in and escape. As soon as I did, he killed the monsters, then me, then teleported home once he could (combat timer) and came back with pack horses. Started looting all of my house's treasure chests full of stuff I'd collected from events over 10 years. I finally was able to log in as my paladin and murder him, but most my stuff was already gone. At least I was able to remove him from my house's friend list. Turned out his nephew played the game, and I met him years later. His uncle died of colon cancer a few years later and no one attended his funeral.

So relevant! One of the things video games teached me is to stay alert and keep distance to anyone i meet for the first time. You never get betrayed if you dont give a chance to betray you.
I'm like that in especially Red Dead Online and Sea of Thieves, people just love to betray you in those games and it sucks that I have to be so paranoid when I play games like that. 🥲
You know, an interesting mechanic (that some game or other probably has already done), is to have it so recognizable gear is more likely to be identified as stolen if worn/seen, and harder to resell. The thief would either need to take some effort to disguise it (use a crafting skill to rework the appearance), hawk it far away from the victim's stomping grounds, or just take the risk of getting caught if they use it.
There's a reason I don't play online games very often. And the ones I do play require you to either accept a duel or be in very specific, easily avoidable areas for PvP
I dont even understand what is the point of those games ? Spending time and energy to get gear that can be stolen that easily is clearly a total waste of time. It only ends up in people ganging up and the biggest gang wins. This privileges number over any kind of skill or any fighting strategy.

I love how ben went from being the antagonist or asshole in every sketch he was in to being the good guy now, and Alan from being the good guy all the time to more and more often being the bad guy
How do you know whether he was a good guy or not? : P He could still be his usual self but a victim of the crouch betrayal too.

😢 that sucks
They will pay
I thought Alan's crouching was just him practicing his upcoming tea-bagging of Ben.
Unless character gestures were placed in the game by the developers, then Alan's movements were a translation for "t-bag you're dumbass corpse". 😂
I know this feeling so well for old school EverQuest.
It's downright depressing.
Ben does such a great job portraying the deep feelings.
Right?! This and the depression skit portray it so well!
Adding help for the help I got. As I recall, you had to accept duels lol. the PvP server just sounded like a bad idea to me lol.

Alan hasn't been this evil since he got his hands on the white shirt
I think it was when they took away his wife that he went bad. I would too.
I see Hamish and Adam just standing behind Alan as he sits in his computer chair, yelling for him to stab Ben and take his stuff.
Ben: “WE crouched”.
*Please take note that Ben didn’t crouch even once during the video*
He started the video off crouching though
he was the one that initiated the crouch command
Only way to get around it was to delete all your characters and start fresh, but one way or another people always got found out and would just get black listed again.
its his own fault..... never make a scared crouch deal that stinks....... of garlic
Sounds like a healthy social environment, actually.
Can't do that now. Griefers and other assholes are protected because to share their name/shame them is considered "doxing" by a lot of sites like reddit etc...
Back in my Silkroad days, this would have spiralled out of control into a guild war

Breaking the crouch truce is like defying a legitimate shotgun call. Bad mojo gonna come his way soon.

“You don’t even care.. do you?” I felt it when he said that… we need to be better to each other 😭 especially in video games we are all there to escape 😭😭😭

Wow, costume design is really getting good. Nicely done
Alan taught Ben a valuable lesson, and all it cost was the gear he had on him; Don't trust strangers.
So relevant! One of the things video games teached me is to stay alert and keep distance to anyone i meet for the first time. You never get betrayed if you dont give a chance to betray you.
Close off your heart to everyone else. The easiest way to not get hurt :P
I had to explain to EvE players why I kept away from them even when helping them do missions.

I worked with a lot of people like that. They pretend to make friends with you and then they either try to get you fired or to get you to quiet.
I have a theory, Alan was actually scared because Ben NEVER crouched back, which means the sacred crouch oath was never reciprocated and therefore invalid.
He basically admits that he only cares about taking gear from Ben.
That's a great theory.... why'd he take only Ben's gear?
