    So a viewer asked me to do a car finance comparison where we see if it's better to lease or buy a VW GOLF R. He particularly wanted to see if PCP made sense against a PCH car lease so I ran through the basics and came up with this quick summary of my thoughts. I hope these little car finance tips help you in your thought process when it comes to buying a new car and signing up for your next car finance deal.
    IN my opinion in this case the lease works out much better, obviously, we can't predict future car values but using my best guess I can't really see a time where it would work out beneficial to do a PCP on this over a lease unless you really wanted to hold on to the car past the initial 3 year period (in which case other forms of finance should also be considered).
    Car leasing can be a great way of driving a new car for less than a PCP and doesn't tie you to a single manufacturer. Check out my lease deals of the month videos each month to find my pick of the best car lease deals on a monthly basis. Hopefully, these videos get car finance explained in fairly simple terms that most people can understand but drop me a comment if you have any questions.

    Good work, especially when struck with the covid. The rate you found for the pcp is not bad at 5.2%, but you forgot that the lease will include RFL which would be c£500/Yr thus bettering the lease deals by £1,500. Get well soon 👍

    Good afternoon Jim I hope you feel better soon. I am looking at purchasing. a 3 year old C Class Merc Ragtop, I plan to hopefully buy early 2023 with 30% cash and the rest bank loan, Hopefully the used market bubble would off burst by then.The present. car my wife has is worth nothing. I am still amazed that the lease schemes are so much cheaper them manufactor P C P . The only way I would do a P C P was if I wanted to keep the car and run in the ground and the deal was very good deal ideal 0%

      Hi Paul, thanks for watching and commenting. I agree, if you’re buying a car to run until it dies then the finance arrangement is far less of an issue but if you like the 2/3/4 year cycle then you need to box clever 👍

    Good video. Don't forget that road tax is thrown in FOC as part of the lease. This is not insignificant as the list price is over £40k.
    Get better soon btw.

      Thanks! you'd have to check for yourself as deals change regularly but I'd expect the lease to go up by somewhere around £70-£90 per month for the extra mileage

    I signed a new PCP deal with BMW for a new m135i their taking my 2019 m140i, its estimated worth after 3 years was 20k but because of the used car market as it was/is i was given 25k and that was back in June.
    Obviously delays with new car builds have affected all manufacturers hence im up to 7 months now and counting i understand the Golf r is even longer unless your lucky to find a car in stock (very lucky).
    Also remember this example of the Golf r is a standard example £40,900 if you want a few optional extras be prepared.
    Also IMO beware dealers selling desirable cars at over inflated prices to avoid waiting times these cars and prices will come back and bite you when it comes to selling on and the market has stabilised in a few years

    Just some observations. Do you think perhaps including some form of additional discount on the PCP would make this a fairer comparison? I appreciate you don’t want to speculate but a discount of £3-4k is easily achievable, beyond the listed manufacturer contribution. Perhaps including an additional £3k deposit would reflect this. I suspect some of these discounts are already built into the lease. Can I check if this R is now definitely in the rich tax bracket? If so, I assume the lease includes the road tax which is quite a chunk of money. Grateful for your thoughts as it may make for a more compelling case on the lease, but may be my lack of understanding. Thanks.

      Hi, I really don’t, the gap between PCP and lease costs in this case are so vast that I really don’t think it makes enough of a difference. PCP is generally only a great deal for the dealers in my personal opinion. The other thing is that the used value of this car in 3 years is highly likely to be much lower than I have suggested in this video for the reasons I explained.
      Lease always includes road tax by the way, 100% of the time.

    I don't get why people put large deposits into PCP/Lease deals as all it is doing is reducing the monthly payment. If you are spending 3-4k of your savings then you will need to save that back up again for your next car/deal in 3-4 years time or else you will find the monthly payments will jump up. Therefore surely you need to include the cost of replacing that deposit in 3-4 years time too? Another consideration too that I think may be overlooked is that inflation may see car prices staying higher for a while as that will no doubt start to filter through to new cars when supplies return.

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru
      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  2 роки тому

      I usually do 3 months upfront on my lease deals for that reason. I think if you are leasing a car you hopefully understand that you need a deposit for another one (should you want to lease again). Thanks for watchign and commenting Clare, stop by again soon 👍👍

      There’s more to it, I always put the most down, usually 9 months. Prefer to have lower amounts showing as liabilities if possible for mortgage reasons etc and to make it easier to budget monthly.

    I just can't get my head around why someone would put a substantial deposit down on a car then pay perhaps circa £500/month for 36-48 months and at the end of this period have nothing to show for it. And then repeat the procedure all over again, just to have something new on the driveway every 3 years. Or am I missing something here

    One thing not considered is that is the list price on the VW website. You are likely to get significant discounts if negotiating or going through something like carwow.
    You are unable to get the same discount on the lease. Therefore the difference in total spent will be far less when comparing the 2. Also, if the pcp was stretched to 4 years instead of 3 (as that is where I believe you gain the most value) you would be better off than on the lease 👍

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru
      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. It was considered early in the video actually. VW are giving you nearly a grand on this deal (I mentioned their deposit contribution) you’d maybe get another 1 or 2 max off on carwow at which point you’re still not close to breaking even against the lease, even with todays silly used prices.
      Each to their own eh! 👍👍

    • @EVLogic
      @EVLogic 2 роки тому +1

      @@DefinitelyNotAGuru fair enough mate! I guess it does depend on the car - I’ve managed to get an almost 20% saving via carwow on another car (before prices went up in new year) so decided to go with a pcp. I’ve historically leased since 2013.
      Great content anyway and you have a subscriber in me 👍
