Hi there 🙂@0:48 I actually said QUORN mince which is a meat free alternative, not pork 😆 That made me laugh, so thanks for leaving a comment....and for watching 😂😂🤣🤣
I'm lazier than you. After I get it all cooked up in the pan I put the potatoes on top and shove the whole thing in the oven. One less band clean! I enjoy this show so much. It's now mid 2022 having discovered you during the COVID times and it's been fun to go back and watch you in the before times and see how much you and the channel have matured. I really enjoy and I'm grateful for the work you've put into this. Cheryl. Love from Akron, Ohio halfway between New York and Chicago
My mother made this dish at least once a month when I was growing up. At the time, I didn't really like peas or carrots, but I would eat this like I had been starving for days.
I just made this for my family to rave reviews! We're Canadian, but have Scottish ancestry through my grandparents, who return to Scotland for months each year. I've been trying to make more traditional Scottish meals and this was a resounding success, seeing as we left absolutely no leftovers :)
I just tried this recipe last night and decided to trade out the peas for some mushrooms and it was absolutely delicious! Thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! Looks amazing! The weather is suppose to turn colder next week and I'm going to give this a go! I can't wait!!
That's magic. With my one I use beef gravy mix and not flower and I sometimes put ethier horse radish or mustard into my potatoes. As a different style. If you try it hope you like it. And yes me Mum used to do the mustard (power still Colmans) for me Dad so that's where it comes from. Good old days.
Delicious! The first time I made your recipe exactly as written and my husband love it. The next time I made it I didn’t have all the ingredients in the house so I did a bit of substituting. I used red wine vinegar in place of the wine, and marjoram for the thyme. Also, I cannot have dairy, so I n his half of the pie I used real butter and real parmesan, and on my half I used vegan butter and vegan parmesan. While it did taste a bit different than the first time, it was still very good and my husband and I still loved it. Your wonderful video helped me see exactly how it should look at each stage so I didn’t have to guess if it was right. I can’t wait to make this rich and warming meal for my grown son who is also dairy free.
I made this last night following you're recipe.... while it was starting to cook it tasted bitter and I thought I'd over dome it with the wine... but after all the cooking was complete... it tasted absolutely amazing... I usually use packet mixes ..but this recipe was spot on... I will akways follow you're recipe for this from now on... I highly recommend this... SOOOOO nice!!! Thankyou. Xxx 🥰 p.s.. it tastes even better the next day... my little boy is eating it as I type. He loves it too.
My grandmother from Dalbeattie (near Castle Douglas, in the lowlands near the Solway Firth) always used to make cottage pie, although she called it shepherds pie, but she never used any seasonings except salt and pepper, and she would NEVER have used tomato paste or garlic. She liked to use a potato ricer for the potatoes, rather than mash them. It made them lovely and fluffy, and the top of the casserole would brown a little on top.
I think a little less chopped onions and then later add some pearl onions. Still get the onion flavor and the pearl onions will make the Cottage Pie look pretty. It's just me. :)
Hi Cheryl, I remember you doing a quorn mince slow cooker recipe, I can't find it anywhere! I think it was either a cottage pie or spaghetti bolognese...help! x
Have you ever tried a teaspoonful or two of Marmite in with the stock? And a good grate of extra mature cheese and mixed herbs sprinkled over the top before you put it into the oven?
I’ve always thought that using a hand mixer wasn’t the best way to do mash, but I’ve, just recently, watched a Rick Stein video and he advocates using a hand mixer, so I’m going to try it next time I make mash!
Looks great! Please clarify for me. Did you drain your potatoes? I didn’t see that part. Where did all the water go? I ❤️ your videos and I’m a subscriber. Thank you for showing us this recipe. 😊
Hi Carmen :) Yes It's freezable :) But I would portion it out into 4 or 5 portions rather than freezing it as one dish.....otherwise it will take about a year to thaw and cook from frozen :) Thanks for popping over and let me know how it goes x
Shepherds pie or cottage pie ? ....... not the genuine recipe, it’s updated, though looks delicious ! This was literally a pie made of leftovers for the shepherds lunch They never used tomato purée or wine ! Might have drank wine on side ? They would use ground pork or. Beef...carrots, onions, peas? And any leftovers of vegetables then top it with potatoes , ( no cheese, sour cream just regular mashed potatoes , salt ) not runny still want a nice thick mash ... I always thought cottage pie was same only topped with puff pastry? I have made both , I do use Bisto gravy mix! I’m all for shortcuts, and use frozen puff pastry ! In the cottage pie I use a little ceramic bird shaped with mouth open, ( forget name ! ) in middle. To let the steam liquid escape and you don’t get soggy pastry, I think this is where our famous mince and potatoes originated, was time saving, with out making pastry ! I’d love to see recipe and cooking of dough ball’s in stew or mince ! They were my very favourite growing up !
Anyone else had to go back and check if the line really was "use pork mince if you want to keep it vegetarian"? :)

Shepherd's Pie is lamb, Cottage Pie is beef, at least that's the differentiator these days.
Need to listen said quorn.
