Just love watching how polite and respectful people were 40 odd years ago were
the cook reminds me of my favourite secondary school
lunch time worker she always got me to speak PROPERLY lol (1986)
People still are, depends who you spend your time with.
Standards are slipping!!@@Bombabingbong66
lol, the world didn’t revolve around TV. Berry is one of the poshest people to ever appear on TV. People were more polite in general but there’s rose tinted glasses also.
Cottage pie made with beef mince and shepherds pie made with lamb mince. The 'C' in cottage and the 'C' in cow is how I am going to remember. Thank you Mary!🪲
I always remembered by knowing that shepherds looked after sheep, so the cottage pie must be beef mince. I think your reference is better tbh.
My gravy browning has a sell by date of 1993. I think I am keeping it as a historical artefact. I can’t bring myself to throw it away.
I love the retro cooking!
I always loved Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie, they are the greatest comfort food!! I use vegetarian mince to make this and have whatever veg I feel like with it, carrots, green beans, broccoli, or whatever you prefer. Mary Berry very pretty, and a good cook.
Mary Berry is always about the cooking. Nigella is about the eating.
I grew up watching Delia smith, miss her, bring back butchers god bless them, had loads years ago, lucky if you have one left, bloody supermarkets
Moan , but everyone chose convenience and cost with supermarkets 😅
My town isn't that large, yet it has 4 butchers! The quality of their meat is vastly superior to the supermarket and well worth the extra cost.
Do search out proper butchers. It is use them or lose them and their meat is so much better and sometimes cheaper. And I pay mine in cash.
I think they were lovers for a short while.
What a simple dish! Mary seemed a bit nervous relatively (a bit of stutter in the beginning), Judy was a bit calming here. And reminder her of the butter knobs on top :) Poor Mary getting her hand burned on the stove. That hand has been through enough!
cottage pie is one of our favourites, shepherds pie as well.
Delicious comfort food!
The amount of salt used in those days , but loved the knife trick Mary well done
Wow. Ms. Berry was stunning. I had no idea.
Not too much dried herbs! 😁
Are farmhouse vegetables a standard part of cottage pie??
I'd much prefer to include them (peas, carrots, and green beans).
Complementing those with broccoli and cauliflower, and a thick tomato sauce.
I'm not too sure about the idea of adding fat however - nor butter...a nice vegetable fat instead of animal fat sounds healthier in more ways than one - particularly when heated to high temperatures.
Which part of the cow has the most meat - I'd prefer that to ground up bone!!
Yes you can do that. Make it how you like. There are always variations to this kind of dish. I always used to add a tin of tomatoes in my mince, but these days I omit the tomatoes because I like it to taste more beefy. I only add tomatoes to mince when making a lasagna.
@@MG63 tinned tomatoes?
That sounds familiar!
Think my mother used to add those to mince as well when I was younger.
A much, MUCH larger casserole dish would be needed though these days! 😋
@@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 Absolutely. The casserole dish in this video would be my portion. 😆
I always wanted to eat Mary Berry's cottage pie.
😵
I prefer the shepherd's pie, personally.
Is this the WW2 quick version?
um not sure but it was made exactly like this in the 1970s
@@nexis001 its a running joke btw
Where's Fanny Craddock?
I remember her. Everyone said she was vile.
@@JamesSmith-qs4hx She died years ago.
@@JamesSmith-qs4hx Your point being.
@@MG63 What is your point?
@@JamesSmith-qs4hxAre you obsessed with black people?
Wouldn't fancy trying that no stock lark with the shite mince you get in the supermarket. It'd be tasteless.
I made this recipe and it was horrible
So bored with these bloody Mary Berry vids. There was more to the 70's than Mary Berry. 🙄
Mary berry just has an awful, patronizing personality. Amy time Judith makes a suggestion or idea, Mary has zero tact and just sets out to make her ideas sound stupid.
What an awful recipe??? But great to see this clip. I used to watch this with my mum as a young child in the early 70s.
