- Volkswagen VW ID. Buzz 7-seater LWB Long Range EV MPV - FIRST LOOK. Jonny Smith heads to California for the US launch of the LWB Buzz - which has a longer body, is a 7 seater as standard with a bigger battery (more range) and bigger boot.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show. Subscribed yet?
With a 250mm longer wheelbase (and overall length) the 4962mm Buzz electric MPV has been launched with a larger 86kWh useable (91kWh gross) battery pack, promising 460+km of range (that's 285 miles) from its revised 210kW (286ps) rwd single motor. Choose between a 5, 6 or 7 seater arrangement inside, plus the huge 1.7-metre long pano glass roof that is electrically charged liquid crystal and can change from clear to opaque with the touch of a switch. The Buzz also promises a revised infotainment software... which it needed.

It looks great. Fantastic to get 7 seats and two tone paint. cheers Jonny. 2x👍
I wonder if you could buy a front seat from the van and install it yourself.
Thank you for watching. Yeah, Jonny reckons the Cargo triple front seat will fit...
@@TheLateBrakeShow Thats really handy.👍👍
My thoughts exactly. Once they are readily available, this thing screams _customizations!_
@@jwvandegronden yep, just like the old ones. 👌
So long as the front airbags are the same units across the range. It would be a shame if the center passenger just has to pray in the event of an accident.
a bit off topic but...i really like he uses a on hand notebook to refer to key numbers etc. makes it feel the dialogue isnt 'scripted' and gives a cool casual vibe to the review. good work dude
Bilal, thank you for the comment. Glad you enjoy Jonny's signature CarPervert note book.
I’m obsessed with this van, i can only pray to ever get my hands on one in this lifetime though. Doesn’t hurt to dream
When I was younger my Dad looked at a Samba Bus as a traveling vehicle, though it didn't have the power he wanted/needed to get into the mountains! Both my wife and I are entertaining the idea of buying a Buzz.
This! Is the review of the iD Buzz LWB I’ve been waiting for. Nobody does it better than Jonny 👌🏽
That is exceptionally kind. Thank you Raymond.
@raymondpritchard ... +1.. Agreed. . I pass up half a dozen others. .. The late Brake Show with Jonny Smith is the one to watch. .. Cheers, Colorado
Absolutely better than Fully Discharged. That show just sounds like a paid sales pitch
You were waiting for a review with no road testing?
VW rushing this van to market. It's only taken 23 years
Yeah, right?!
If there is one thing VW Buses are known for... it is speed. lol
I liked the 2001 version too, even more 👍👍 Even today it looks modern 😍😍
Honestly even the 6-7 year gap between the concept Jonny drove on the other channel and this version of the buzz is frustrating.
not for VW people anymore... this is Tesla crowd pricing no doubt ($$$$$$$$$$)
Jonny must be my one of my favourite car journalists! So easy to listen to and makes everything interesting.
This is how the pro's do a review... best in class Jonny - as always... keep them coming.
First time watching this channel! And I learned more about this car than on other channels. I'm sure people complain about the notebook you carry, but I think it's great that you took notes and are providing something that doesn't feel scripted.
Watch more videos of Jonny. He's a professional car journalist and used to be on TV in the UK. He knows his cars.
I had a Grand Espace for several years, it was the 3.0V6 so decently fast and capable of swallowing huge loads and still able to stop. This reminds me of that. Wonderously useful and ideal for long journeys with several people.
Not dissimilar to a people carrier its very similar to the last incarnation of the VW Sharan just slightly bigger.
3.0 V6 is way better than this.
Fabulous, wonderful thing ❤️
Guy in our car club has one and following it on a run and watching the suspension working is a joy.
+1 ... What a bus .... We Joined & support The Late Brake Show .... Remember... braking late, wins the day. .. Cheers, Vail, Colorado
Michael, cheers v much sir
Seems perfect for my family of 5 in San Francisco. I have a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid now, but this saves 9 inches of length. Crucial for parallel parking and small garages.
One word - CAMPER..! 😊
As regards you Jonny, I really miss you on that other channel.
the amount of research you do is bloody spectacular 👍
Well thank you. This one we had 20 mins to film, so it was a bit bloody frantic!
I agree , 👍
I absolutely LOVE these and really want to get one (the available one) to replace my current daily hack. I saw one boarding the ferry to France a few weeks ago and it looked epic. I did try to arrange a test drive with my local VW dealership who messed me around something rotten! Still love 'em though.
Got a test drive of the SWB version and loved it, but it was too small in the SWB format. The LWB 99kW is going to be the one to buy, especially if it comes with LFP batteries.
Just need to sell the children and the house to afford it, if the price of the SWB version is anything to go by ! 😂😂😂
@@Banyan314I have no kids, so for me, 5 seater is probably fine. I like the idea of doubling up as a sort of 'day van'.
Miles per KW is super crap. No way near the manufacturer stated.
Just a cool vehicle, the roof is amazing… how much do I want one…. I’d bet I’d smile every day driving it!
Beautiful color combo for the ID Buzz!
I was on my motorbike the other day behind one of these in the south west uk, it looks very nice.
Got a T4 and seen so many people being snotty about this but I love it, got great ideas to personalise one, love the long wheelbase, can't wait to see the campers and a pop top
Sure would hurt taking a grinder to that sunroof!
Similar dimensions to the T4 no?
It's got a bigger footprint than a T4, but not as spacious inside.
I was so disappointed that they took away the bonnet badge illumination with the regular wheelbase version after we saw it in Jonny’s buzz concept video 6 years back, glad to see it’s back in this form, overall it seems like they’ve created the ultimate buzz with this LWB North American specced out version, interested to see what the GTX will be like.
Thanks Jonny a greatlook around the Buzz. Cheers
Cheers for watching Tim
Amazing review mate! Kudos from Austin, Texas - US.
Finally! Been waiting to see this model come out
"In the US, cooled seats come as standard, for the UK, you get a rusty spike as standard".
😐
We love a rusty spike in the front seats.
But we don't complain, we are used to hardship😊
The want for the Buzz remains strong. Got an Enyaq but for the space I need a roofbox. No roofbox if I had one of these.
Love the LWB , it's so much better .
Take care on that platform Circle though Jonny. We almost lost Thomas from Autogefühl !! 😂😂
That's true. Poor Thomas took a tumble!
Vw have absolutely nailed the exterior styling on the buzz 👌
Think this will do very well in the U.S. Two tone paint a real eye-catcher and good on VW for the top variety of colour choice available.
Am 100% sure some or a number of customer will go to a tuning shop and get their ID Buzz converted to a classic Samba.
In the US, apparently orders are going to be exclusively through dealers instead of the ID.4 model of basically being exclusively through the website. I was able to get a down payment on the books to hold a place in line, which is good because US allocations are supposed to be VERY tight for at least 2024. I will almost certainly buy an early model with modest battery pack and specs, and upgrade later to a pop-top camper version, which I believe will also be equipped with a ~100-110kWh battery pack. Oh, and these are not going to be cheap in any US spec.
So yet again the US doesn't get a HUD?
Not cheap in US at MRP, and then those dealers are going to add $20000, maybe $50000 market adjustments until demand starts to wane. And VW obviously support this approach by making it exclusively dealer sold….
Is the camper version even going to be available in the US?
never buy a first year model of something this different unless you like recalls
Thanks for this comprehensive review of the car
Sir amazing job you did. Thank you! subbed
Absolutely perfect for me. Thanks for that.
Desirability is off the chart for this, but I’m expecting it to be £75k in the spec that I’d want and that’s a LOT of cash (i.e. I can’t afford it)
G'Day Jonny, this reminded me of my '63 23 Window Samba with the white on surf green livery! Young Talent Time hired the Bus and had me drive it along Kerford Road Beach with the whole team on board singing 'I come from a land DownUnder'
Tina Arena was 9 when she was dancing over the rear seats to the song. Lots of fun to have with this new generation Buzz!
What a story. Love the 23 windows!
I have a buzz, waiting for the lwb to come to the UK
I love it!!
I really like it, bold design with clear nostalgic nods to the type 2
Love the back seats. Roger, roger. 😁
Yep, got my name on the list at my local dealership. Quite excited for one.
Cool vehicle I love the look. Prices will be epic in any specification.
I Canada we will apparently be getting the 5 seats as standard with the 2 additional seats as add on options. I like the design, but seems to only really make sense as a commuter or local family transporter. I can't imagine relying on this for any real recreational use for long distances.
A great airport run vehicle though
Looks fantastic though I wish they went with individual rail style seating like the T7 Multivan we have. The flexibility to take all the seats out and turn it into the Buzz cargo would have been awesome.
Strongly agree with you. If Individual removable seats added, This would be 100% satisfied to me, now only 70%. I am driving T6.1, waiting for T7 4motion, now I changed my mind and waiting for ID buzz LWB 6 seater to NZ.
Recently got to see and play around in a pre production version from Europe at my local dealer here in California. It's pretty nice.
im SOOO excited!!! i want one STAT, but am really looking forward to the westfalia edition im hoping for. 😅
Really hope to see these things succeed! Hopefully will see a comparison with a Canoo, whenever all of these concepts finally ship to customers.
You Sir, are a great reviewer!
Fantastic video. I have a type 2 bay. Would give my right arm to have one of these, even if the range is limited.
11:05 personality I just love it
Hey Jonny, must correct you on the USA being the 'last' place to be able to get a iD BUZZ. Sorry that is Australia, we still do not have ANY iD cars for sale here. iD3, iD4, iD5, none of them are here yet, let alone the iD BUZZ. Looking forward to finally seeing one of these in the flesh sometime in 2026 or 2027 or 2028 when VW eventually bring them here. Cheers.
That's rotten. Sorry to hear man. The Kombi was big news in Oz too.
@@TheLateBrakeShow VW Australia have been pushing for them, but VW headquarters have just been delaying & delaying. Cupra Born just released here, but that is it from VW group for 'affordable' EV's. In the meantime Tesla are selling at least 4000 cars every month now in Australia. This LWB iD BUZZ is PERFECT for Australia, should be fast tracked here, but it wont be.
I love your videos, you are a very good UA-camr. ❤
I want one so bad 😎🙌🏾 here in Lithuania I’ve seen it in person ,the short one . same color though
Missed opportunities on not having it look more like the original....inside and out. It is really cool regardless.
Needs round headlights with that two-tone paint job at the very least. Really looks nothing like a splittie or bay even without my glasses on. Much closer to an evolved T4/5/6/7 but those arent what most people think of when VW Bus is mentioned.
Calling us in the US patient is a bit generous. ;) Thank you for that.
I’m not understanding the space under the 3rd row. Can I throw a bike, mower, or wheelchair in the back? Does the 3rd row come out to bumper level?
Still looks great. In glad they were able to upgrade the motor in time for the US release. The false floor is simple and looks durable, easy to remove. There's going to be so many accessories for this, it will be crazy. Also would like to see a full length integrated solar panel instead of the sunroof as an option. In California, could add 10 miles a day with that acreage
great video! Do you know if you can remove the second row seats?
The larger the EV vehicle the more electricity it will consume. California can't supply enough electricity currently. Add in a heatwave and you are asked not to charge between 4-9pm.
... seems obvious that people shouldn't charge then! In the UK they were literally paying people not to use electricity during such peak periods this past winter. This doesn't necessarily mean there isn't enough electricity generation, it just means spreading the load.
nice work Jonny boy. Love the retro design of this, reminds me of when VW did it to the Beetle.
Not so sure about the white interior, it will get filthy !
i am still patiently waiting for the camper variant.. but that roof is really marvelous.
Great video, as always! The luggage space looks quite small compared to a 7 seat t5/t6 or a v-class.
It's more a supersized Sharan, but sadly less smart seat folding due to the battery pack. Happy a minivan EV exists though.
I like the well organised presentation with a note book. I think you should make the notebook style standard... looks more authentically well researched and not too rehearsed... including the 'oh, let me check that...' 👌
Are the rear tires wider / lower profile than the front? That's been the pattern on the larger MEB vehicles.
Awesome video, as always 👏👏👏
The most impressive feature is more usb outlets than seats👍
Another great review!
Flawless use of SI units!
Potentially if they offered 3-a-breast at the front, it could have been a 6-seater with loads of luggage space, potentailly being a major USP
EXACTLY!
@@mikegolfwhiskey71and what about airbags ie. safety?
What about us fat Americans? Get real! 😅
VW Canada did their research and concluded that the logical standard configuration in Canada will be the 2+3 5 seater. The back seats will be optional but, according to their research, they don't think too many Canadians will opt for the extra two seats.
Makes sense, the typical family has 2 kids in Canada.
Looking forward to seeing these on the road. Doubt that I'll own one but who knows.....
Me too. I am not rich enough for that vehicle. I can only afford some Teslas.
Excited to see these on the road - it makes me wonder when we'll see Honda release an EV Odyssey
Thanks for the video and stay safe ✌️.
And you! 👍🏽
I'm looking for EV Vans to transport personnel back and forth to the power plant I manage. It looks like 4 seven seater would suit us well. A great option worth considering. Great video. Thank you
Had mine since March. Everyone stops to chat and a lot of people give you a wave whilst driving.
Looks very nice inside
I really want this in the 5 seat format for putting all my camping gear in. I would love to cover the roof in solar panels so I rarely have to charge it, it seems a shame with that massive sunroof though.
A final thought, that towbar release looks really dirty.
I love how he is describing the car for the American market, so he helpfully converts milimeters, to centimeters.
Holding out for the Cali version!
2:36 The side door in this 7-seater opens about the same amount as the 5-seater, yet the actual door is much longer. Perhaps it opens wider in the cargo version?
I have to say, after years of looking at this thing since those early concepts... I wish they made them look more retro instead of generic sci-fi/futuristic car. If they took the approach that Fiat does with their 500's, which still look very retro to todays standards, and very similar to how they originally looked - this would be some much cooler if it looked like a classic Kombi. Give it round headlights, pastel colours and some nice chrome trim and adjust some of the shapes and curves a little bit I think this could be a winner.
For the retro look, yes perhaps VW could have made the Buzz look more so, but they had to provide crash protection. The front occupants knees don't really do the best of jobs in that way. And it does look really nice anyway.
Good thinking! Maybe they should have put halogen headlights and bulb marker lights all around. That would give it a more retro look. 😢
What happens when Texas sized hail hits that roof? Serious question. Is there an option for a solid roof with solar sun panels?
Yet another very interesting and informative review Jonny, these indoor reviews suit me best I think, the speech is just so much clearer imo. I was thinking about EV's in general the other day, and more specifically, servicing. It occurred to me that when we service an ICE vehicle, things like plugs, oil & filters, air filters etc etc etc are all on the list to be changed, and thus charged for. When an EV goes in to be serviced, what gets done? And more importantly, what does the customer get charged for? How much is it to service an EV? Might be a good idea for some investigative journalism....would you agree?
My understanding of the "big" selling point of EVs is that there is basically no regular servicing required. You replace tires and wiper blades when they wear out and that's it. Everything "mechanical" is controlled by computer and can be upgraded by the manufacturer via software downloads.
Is the long wheelbase coming as a normal van as well ? What would the cargo length be then ? Thank you for always great content !😊
Not much mate. They're tiny. It's only 25cm longer externally
Does the 2 capitain seat 2nd row also lie flat like 3 seat 2nd row?
Great review 👍👍👍👍
It’s just a shame VW can’t sort out their software. My ID´s update to v2.4 took 10 days, and currently the car is bricked at the dealership going through the v3.2 update. 3.2 has also reintroduced some bugs that 3.0 resolved.
And that's the future of motoring. "Sorry I'm late boss, car was updating"
"Fine, Charlie but three days late??
The LWB suits the Buzz perfectly and gives it the space it needs for its USP
Just ordered the current SWB, as a leased vehicle as I will wait to buy until the LWB with the improvements arrived sometime in 2024 ;)
Not a huge VW fan even if i do own a VAG Group Skoda but i do like the ID Buzz and this one looks look good in the green and white, shame its so expensive because it looks fantastic.
Light and cheerful color scheme.
How much and when in the UK Market ?
Will it have LFP batteries ?
This looks great and seems really fun. I would love it if the front seats could rotate to be able to face the middle and back seats.
Agree. Could be simply a weight/cost issue, however VW could offer it as an option given that many Asian minivans already offer this captains chair feature.
Allready a Company in UK that makes a turning plate for the front seats
I like the long wheel base though there seems to be no mention of the cargo version. As I live in the land of ice and snow, sometimes call the Great White North I am looking at the AWD option. The sun roof is a cool option but I have a sun roof on my '05 TDI Golf and I haven't opened it it about a year let alone pulled the cover back and I view it as a vent which the buzz is not capable. I will be putting my order down as soon as ordering becomes available. They say that there will be some minor differences between the US and Canadian versions. I really do like those passenger side windows as possible vents.
seen on today in cottingham , yellow and white it looked cool
Are those capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel? I've heard they are awful while driving.
What about the link to your origonal review? Can't find it in the description? Awesome review btw..
We will put it there. Thank you for reminding us.
Most excellent review -- when is it coming to UK? (maybe I missed that bit)
Mid 2024
Can't wait to see someone use it for camping!😄
I love it, the only current vw I'd have. We need an ID Bug beetle rebirth now to go up against the Renault 5, Fiat 500e, Mini electric.
That's a very good shout! I.d Bug 👍 thinking more.. its not even that hard, I.d 3 skateboard, bug body... job done... got me thinking I wonder if somewhere in a dark corner of the factory such a thing is being created 🤔
Can't wait for some camper conversions of this van in the US.
VW will have it's own California version. But the range issue is a serious problem even with the upcoming 111 kwh battery pack and bi-motor. 300 miles at best is not good enough. You would need to lug around a petrol powered generator and that would get you no more than 300 miles anyway, I'm talking about remote driving in Australia.
I'm waiting for someone to do a proper camper version of this with a higher roof
yeah for some reason there are only pop-up roof-conversions at the moment.. but it also doesn't matter since it will be above the 100k price range
Higher roof will kill the range to something that's impractical for a camper I think.
@@UTube-gs1yf You just have to drive a bit slower in a bulky campervan
Combustion engine VW campers are outrageously priced, this EV will be obscenely priced as a camper.
