  • Elgar's Sospiri Op.70, played by the New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted John Barbirolli (recorded at the Kingsway Hall, London,16 June 1966). The video (unrelated to the audio track) includes rare film of Elgar himself conducting at the Empire (later Wembley) Stadium, London on April 23 1924 and at the opening of the Abbey Road Studios, London, on November 12 1931.

I was astonished when i first heard Sospiri, such a glorious piece of music from Elgar, and i have loved it ever since! This version by Sir John Barbirolli is wonderful, as it is recorded in the sadly-missed Kingsway Hall.

@clt242fg Thanks so much Gwyn for your comment. The inclusion of the silent film of Elgar conducting at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 was intended to be ironic, his distress at the horror of that event ("no soul & no romance & no imagination") being intentionally in stark contrast to the very private nature of Sospiri, but clearly this approach failed in your view, and I'm sorry if this video gave you an unpleasant experience.

Enregistré le 16 juillet 1966 et non le 16 juin 1966 ( selon Evelyn Barbirolli "life with Glorious John )...enregistrement magnifique 👏👏👏👏

If you are a fan of Philip Pullman's His Dark Material: Listen to this and read Lyra and Will's goodbye from the ending of The Amber Spyglass. Pullman said this piece captures the atmosphere of the scene he had written. It is a beautiful experience to combine both masterpieces.

I can’t find the Sol Gabetta live version anymore. With her eyes closed, she definitely was into a trance playing the cello. Simply breathtaking.

Amazingly, the perfect execution of a song of this size makes the skin crawl and invites us to reflect on what its creator had in mind when he composed it. 🥲
