Unsolicited Comment: I took the Fusion course right after release. Like what 2 years ago? It was the only course that ever really got me going. I had taken a course at my local marker space and one on UA-cam. Neither really got me to a place where I could do much of anything. Bob's course was a perfect intro course for what I needed. It got me to a point where I could do almost everything and know enough when I needed to do something more advanced I could watch a video and understand what was going on. Highly recommend
Same! I had a ton of false starts with Fusion, but the ILTMS course just seemed to "click" with me. I felt like it was the right amount of information to get you started without being overwhelming.
@@lewisreid7395 I also tried to force myself to do a "simple project a day" that took about maybe 15-20 minutes to do - like learn how to make threaded bolts / nuts or press-fit objects, etc - it really helped and now I don't know how to build anything without modeling it first. :-)
Bob, please make this a full series video. My first vehicle was a 1979 FJ40. It was my dads. I grew up with remembering Tojo (as we called the FJ40) being broken down for most of my life on the driveway. When I became old enough to get my license, my dad and I got Tojo running again. It needed brakes, tires, fuel pump, slave cylinder, a transfer case (was hard to find back in the mid 2000s). The tub was rusted to hell, it steered like crap with its manual steering, brakes sucked, the 4 speed was geared so low you could start in 4th from a stop. The hard top was missing and the soft top leaked like crazy. It was blazing fast with a top speed of like 70 mph. Tojo was out on the road for about 4 months, my brother moved back home and ran Tojo low on oil. My dad got rid of it because he didn't wanna spend anymore money on it. I had dreams of restoring Tojo but it never happened. So please, make a series about this and let me see what Tojo could have been. Btw. That center console is awesome! I would have loved to have something like that. Looking forward to seeing what else you do with the FJ. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
I have been using spray truck bed liner instead of paint for these kinds of projects. Gives a really nice texture and if you want to get crazy, you can buy the fancier stuff in different colors.
Those PVC sheets are one of my favorite materials! They are soft enough that with some patience you can cut them with a utility knife, and they glue up with super glue really well. They were a life saver when I was working out of a spare bedroom and didn't have a any power tools.
This brings back memories of growing up in Colorado 4-wheeling since I was 3 days old. Our HS shop teacher was a badass. He climbed McKinley several times, and took us backpacking every few months. What was really cool is that he owned dozens of '70's FJ's that we would rebuild in class. Unfortunately, he passed away about two years ago, but at 47 I still remember those days with him like it was yesterday. At least I kept using the skills he taught us, and now own a fully restored 1979 C-10 with Ramjet 350. One thing I don't have is AC, and now live in hot and humid Charleston, SC!
The editing and transition game on this video was so on point tbh. I don’t know if I just have not noticed it but the way you changed angles between se ranges was very smooth. Kudos to you and the team. Def a lot of work for those transitions to seem natural.
If you haven't thought about it already you could easily install a bung on the bottom of your console cooler to help drain any water from melted ice and it would still be water tight as well :)
I never knew PVC sheets were a thing, interesting material to test out! One concern would be the edges of the aluminum being quite sharp and causing an injury. Perhaps 3D printing corner bumpers would be nice, or a cushioned top that extended past the edges and becomes a seat when tailgating? I appreciate Bob sharing their ideas and skills, be well!
Yeah. PVC sheets and blocks are becoming a lot for readily available for good prices. You are starting to see a lot of craftsman utilize them for all sorts of things. For some examples, using them as kick-plate covers for outside the home where the wood would meet the ground and wood would rot; use PVC sheets instead because they will never rot. PVC blocks for the bottom inch or two where your wood blocking on exterior doors would touch concrete or get wet; PVC instead because it won't absorb water and rot. Some hardware stores won't stock it, but you'll find they can get it shipped super easily and it's not near as expensive as you might think.
This video is very inspirational. I watch alot of car videos and guys are always coming across unobtanium parts. They may be broken or w e 3d printing and scanning could save their builds
Awesome video and project Bob. Love the old cruiser and it’s always satisfying to solve those little luxuries out. I did something similar for two of my older vehicles. I actually rebuilt a whole console and even added a roof console using the cardboard method like you mentioned at the beginning. The scanner and printer would be awesome to use next time! Can’t wait to see what other ideas it sparks for you.
I for sure thought you were going to use the giant 3D printer to print out the whole console. Either way cool project, I totally agree with you on the power of being able to make stuff with 3D printers. I and printed a phone holder/wireless charger for me Tundra a few years ago and still use it to this day. Its a simple item but it improved my everyday driving experience.
I miss my 98, the only cup holder was right next to the shifter and slightly out of reach so I had to reach slightly uncomfortably too far, and it was too big to securely hold cans.
HDPE could be another material option, but PVC cement being readily available makes a lot of sense for this choice. My Miata also doesn't have cup holders. Now I have another thing to think about. Thanks for sharing!
This was pretty good, but for your next 20 min video I do expect to see a full restoration and pimping out including an engine rebuild. You got the hard part of the cup holder out of the way so bring it home
We actually made a console for our truck (we had b4 it was stolen) it was made out of wood. Cups holders n front, with storage in the back compartment. I put a thick piece of foam covered with leather & the top flipped. It worked great.
Would probably be nice with some rubber or foam to get rid of the rattle while driving. And maybe overkill, but the if cup holder rested on top of the walls and also went into the empty space below it, it could be seated with just the friction and then it could be swapped out for other inserts making it quite versatile
Great video -- this was a terrific fusion 😉 of different making disciples. Enjoying the addition of fx in the videos; portal in hot dog floatie was great.
I would recommend putting some rubber bumpers over the sharp metal corners. It looks like it would be very easy to accidentally ram your elbow into it while driving. There's a reason those center consoles typically aren't sharp and angular.
I had an old Mitsubishi truck that didn’t have cupholders too. I needed one for a short trip and screwed an empty yogurt tub to a paint stir stick and shoved it into cushions. I planned on that being a short term fix. I used that cupholder for 5 years🤣.
Great video 18:54 You could add a bluetooth speaker off the shelf or maybe custom made in the dead space yoy have in cup Holder on either sides. It would be a neat party trick.
I'm here for the audience engagement. That said, I did learn that PVC sheets exist and I think I can use that as a top layer on a toboggan slide for winter (on top of an existing layer).
I wouldn't make much practical stuff but you did remind me I can actually make my own models. I got a Mars 4 Ultra printer and I've been so caught up getting the perfect settings done and learning to print and clean parts that I forgot I could homebrew my stuff and not just download off the internet.

Let me help you - 😎 A GREAT first printer is - Bambu Labs a1 Mini $199 or the a1 mini Combo $349 ~7in cube. Need/want a larger build area ~10in cube - A1 $339 A1 Combo $489 The combos come with the automatic 4 color changing system (AMS). I bought the a1 mini without the AMS to try out the 3D printing to see if it was something I would use/ like. I do and recently added the P1S Combo so I can print with ABS, ASA and more. Matt at 731 Woodworks (on UA-cam) is who convinced me to get going in 3D printing.
The orange peel on that paint job was EGREGIOUS. Great idea though. I have an old 1964 Land Rover and I’d LOVE to get better at scanning so I could do better work around the firewall and suspension. Great inspiration! (Please fix the paint. My ocd won’t let me sleep otherwise)
Freaking sweet project. For polish, have you considered changing out the top cover for a bread bin style lid? I think that would really round this off!
Super cool project Bob! Love it. Also such a fantastic vehicle. Can't wait to see more projects relating to it! Love making mods for my truck. Thought - you should wrap it in some leather on the outsides to give it a little extra classiness (and even add some of that thin mylar bubble wrap stuff for some softness as an armrest and to also add a little thermal barrier to keep ice longer) :) And also... that Tron window is such a good background.
This is really great, I have just bought an old Ford Ranger, where there are parts missing etc. So would be nice with a scanning tool to recreate something of the curves etc.
Bob - How about a couple of videos on the Land Cruiser, giving it a bit of 'Bob Love'. I mean cleaning it up, fixing (or replacing?) the seats, adding a stereo, etc.
There is a third reason to 3D scan. I'm an engineer part of my last job was to 3D scan casted aircraft engine parts. Then I'd take those parts and do a model comparison. Also as a side project outside of work I would scan rocket nozzles (before and after fire). Using the scan data I could get dimensions of various things and calculate various properties. I'd also take that data and do a comparison to the simulated model. In both cases, 3D scanning was a way to do different types of inspections and comparisons.
I really like the idea and all the process to get all the stuff in place. The only thing I really don't like, is the box design. I don't know, but I was expenting something more clean. Overall, I think is a great project
15:45 Make a part that holds both nuts captive, so you will you not be hitting the back edge of the console with such a small hard object if it's over-extended with any force, but also you won't have to get a wrench out to blindly hold it for the disassembly. Also you could get fancy and basically seal the metal away from being exposed to direct moisture, ideally use SS hardware, but eh, you usually got what you got.

Nice build. Have run into some issues with PLA inside vehicles in the past, not sure what you printed in but obviously easily changed. Update on the other Cruiser in the next after show please! 😀
The PVC used is actually an expanded PVC- trade names are Sintra, Trovicel, Komatex. Etc. Great stuff, just don’t use it on a laser cutter as it will give off a poisonous gas
The way you do your ads is brilliant - showing the ad in the top corner while showing a process on the rest of the frame gives a valid reason not to skip and I end up actually listening to the ad instead of skipping through it
Just curious, are you 3D printing the cup holder and the latches out of PETG? Just wondering if you're worried about the heat in the car deforming PLA. I have not printed a whole lot of car accessories, so wondering if you've had prior experience... Keep the great content coming! Love your videos.
would there be enough room inside of that to actually insulate it like a cooler? I imagine if there were, you'd also include a drain for melted water on the bottom.
Cool thing about aluminum is that you can sand it, knock off the edges, etc. It's actually below arm height anyway (to avoid the shifted knob) so it's not sharp, but I did knock off the edges just in case 👍🏼
Lol, I dont have a scanner, I just take measurements like an idiot to make custom parts and things for my car 😂 I will say this tho, one of my biggest challenges will be doing my custom tail lights on my MK1 Golf, so thats where I really see things like this scanner being well worth it 🙌
Hello! One piece of feedback! Love your videos and you are a source of constant inspiration but please please please clean the smudge youve had on the lens for a few videos :( (if you want an example or where it is, go to the 10th second in this video, you will see the smudge right below the steering wheel. Been there for a few videos now and it is (for me) super distracting! Keep up the good work, I absolutely love your channel!
I'm pretty sure I've heard the big, broadcast home improvement shows talk about foamed pvc being extruded out for use as trim. Perhaps those same factories are extruding it out in sheet form too?

Yes. And, if needed, you could run a pipe thru the floor of the car, so the console would not need to be removed from the car to be drained.

Great episode, Bob. Very interesting!👍
i would make the following upgrades:
- nicen up the feet so they are rounded and more "foot-like"
- add a handle
Very well done. AS others have said, maybe a drain plug for draining the console?
Very interesting. For the brackets metal would be perfect.

Would it be possible for you to upload a 3D scan of the body for the enthusiast like me to build some fenders flares and dashboard add-ons. Thanks in advance.
Please keep us the good work.
Enjoying the new variety. Keep it up please!
Wow another FJ40 fan, and I didn't think I could like this channel any more.
He has two. One has been in the shop for full engine repair for like a bazillion years.
These automotive videos are pretty cool. Maybe you could get an old car and restore it. Like maybe….a karmann ghia. Just a thought
😉
I find it funny that to scan a shiny surface you add shiny dots... :P Great video and content as always !
That console is as boxy as the car its in. Perfect.
now you need to design a piping system to have a fan force air up through the bottom of the cooler and into the cab to fix that no a/c issue.
A truck worthy of restoration!😊
Me encantó la parte con el Psy Trance qué emoción!
Man, a while back when i saw your fj80 i meant to ask if you liked old Toyotas, but with this fj40 i dont have to asl the question!
:) Yeah.. I like them.
Finally another car video!
I feel like you just wanted to mess with a 3D scanner lol. I thought you were going to make some bespoke, contoured, insert, but you just made a box. If it works, it works.
I noticed that in the last few videos there is a black spot in some shots.
At first I thought it was my screen but it's only a few shots. for example at 0:31 on your leg.
Now I would be interested by a Fusion360 tutorial/course to go from 3d scans to objects that I can 3D print!
Great job Bob!
Nice build. Have run into some issues with PLA inside vehicles in the past, not sure what you printed in but obviously easily changed.
Update on the other Cruiser in the next after show please! 😀
Yeah, same here with PLA. I print aalmost exclusively in PETG these days, and it does perfectly fine in a hot car 👍🏼
That's pretty awesome
Good thing it was a fairly low center console. My elbow hurts just thinking about bumping that sharp corner :P
Given the shape of the final product, I think you should create another one styled like G1 Optimus Prime (cab and trailer)!
MAAANNNN i wish i made enough money to get a 3d printer. Oh the things i could make and fix in this house would be fantastic!
This kind of idea would be great inside a boat.
Nice project!

can I borrow it? no specific reason either. I just want to borrow one.

I enjoy grabbing a beer and floating on my hotdog floatie swimming in your pool of ideas.
Very cool!!
would there be enough room inside of that to actually insulate it like a cooler? I imagine if there were, you'd also include a drain for melted water on the bottom.
Very cool solution.

Keep up the good work, I absolutely love your channel!
ha yeah, we got to it after a few shots in this project. Gone now 👍
@@forby_ super heroes, thank you!
Here in Brazil, the Toyota FJ40 is known as Toyota Bandeirante
I'm always excited to learn about new construction materials! Anyone know where to find those PVC sheets at affordable prices? Fun project!
I found these at Menards, but I THINK Lowe’s has them too
you mean PVSheets?
I'm pretty sure I've heard the big, broadcast home improvement shows talk about foamed pvc being extruded out for use as trim. Perhaps those same factories are extruding it out in sheet form too?
Would love more car vids
