Just done the test and I was really surprised on what hook I should be using for projects with Anya. I’ve always used a 4mm hook but I’m a 3.5mm hook user 😮
I finally took the time to do this experiment and I was shocked! My 3.5mm hook resulted in a 9x9 cm square. But where your square looks like to have some drape, mine is like a plank! If I made a large granny, you could use it as a flying carpet! So despite getting different measures, I'll go up a size or 2. 🙂
I'm so glad you FINALLY did this!!!! Gauge really is so important to replicating a designer's pattern. It hurts my brain when I hear people say they don't test their gauge before making something. I understand if the exact dimensions/sizes aren't the final goal, but taking the time to check gauge saves a lot of time and heartache
@@OpheliaTalks with this experiment I need to use either a 4.5mm . I'm using a 5mm on the Greenaway and I like the look of it so I think I have a little wiggle room depending on the stitches used. Thanks again!
I found I need to use a 4.5mm hook to get the same, almost, measurements as yourself. Such a useful video, especially when im hoping to make your Marble Cardigan ☺️Thank You so much for making this video 💜
Glowhart you're so very welcome, this was what I had in mind, you see, I'm always thinking 6 projects ahead to make sure everything is as easy as possible!! Thanks for watching, Anja x
My optimum hook size is 4mm to achieve the 9x9cm square which is luckily the hook size I usually use for SSDK. (My 3.5mm hook produced a square 8x8cm and my 4.5mm hook produced a 9.5x9.5cm square).Thank you for a very useful video Anja. (As an aside, I always hold my hook with the knife grip, when I have tried to use the pencil grip, it makes my tension tighter.)
That's brilliant Rachel, it really doesn't matter how you hold your hook, but it is interesting to see how the tension changes!! Thanks for watching, Anja xx
It all is a matter of tension. I use a 4mm hook for DK yarn and my squares look nice and neat like the one you like using your 3.5mm hook. I tried 3.5mm, but mine were too tight.
Hey Anja…from Tacoma, WA…first time texting. I’ve lived doing your projects. My favorite is your scrap pattern granny square blankets. Did the test and I’m a 3.5MM for your patterns. Never did a test before, but I’m a firm believer now. Have you ever did a rectangular granny square blanket. Enjoy your videos and I refer back often when doing my blankets. Thank you and have a blessed day.
Hi Judy, welcome. I have several tutorials on rectangular granny's, I'll get you a link. This is just one of my videos, please have a look through the others! Thank you, Anja x ua-cam.com/video/ZVqmYYm_mMg/v-deo.html
@@OpheliaTalks Anna thank you for reports quickly. I will try your pattern, with one difference…will be using just one color yarn, I can see how to do it with watching you doing your granny squares. Thank you for the tip about the gauge. I am trying to do your scrap blanket pattern with the 3.5MM hook(in the video you used a 4MM hook). It’s to be a blanket for me so I’m looking forward to how it comes out. I may use other color yarn’s of the brand and if I do would like to see how it’s coming along. You are so enjoyable to listen and watch. I’m glad to have learned about the gauge cause I’m liking how my new blanket is coming along. It’s much neater. My mother was from Tokyo, Japan and met my daddy after WWII. We eventually ended up growing up in Rome, GA, cause daddy wanted us to grow up near where he grew up. So I grew up country. She taught me to crochet and knit but it never worked for me, but she was awesome. So thank you for bringing back memories of my sweet mama when I’m crocheting. Do tell your hubby hi.
Anja I’m going to do your rectangle granny pattern for my blanket, we can change our minds correct. Would you like to see how it’s coming along. Take care.
I made my squares, 3.50mm gave me 8x8 cm. 4mm gave me 9x9 cm. 4.5mm gave me 10x10 cm. So my Hook size for Anya projects is a 4mm hook which is the same as the yarn band of Stylecraft DK stated .however if the yarn is fluffy even though a DK I have often used a 3.75 hook for the look of preferences.but have Never measured beforehand.
Most of my patterns usually work out to have a bit left over, alternatively, make your gauge swatch, then don't cut it off, just rip it back and start the project!! Thank you Susan, Anja x
Oh dear. I had to do four squares and I could only get the 9cm by using a 3mm hook. My biggest square with the 4.5 was 11cm! I really don't like using a 3mm hook as I can barely see it when I use it!! I think I need to tighten my tension maybe...
@shiningstar3519 it just goes to show how much different we all are, try changing the way you hold your yarn perhaps, give it a bit more tension, see how you go. Thank you, Anja x
Hmmmm, well Susan, the only thing I can suggest is, you try holding your yarn in a slightly different way, to give it a bit more tension, and also try holding your hook differently. Let me know how you get on, Anja x
@katieshashaty2065 if you're finding your work is coming up too small and tight, you need to use a bigger hook, I suggest you make a test swatch each time you start a project with different yarn so you don't end up frogging everything! Thanks, Anja x
Pattern is in the description box! So what is the outcome of your experiment?? Anja x
Just done the test and I was really surprised on what hook I should be using for projects with Anya. I’ve always used a 4mm hook but I’m a 3.5mm hook user 😮
