Yeah that's not how you see Asterix and Obelix fight in the comic. Why bother picking weapon when you already have the power of magic potion at your side?
I adore Asterix & Obelix, especially in the original French language, the way the original comic books were originally written. I actually own the European Switch physical version, cuz this game was never released physically here in North America, only in Europe, cuz Asterix is more well known in Europe, and I think some parts of South America like Brazil. It's a really fun game.
I ordered the collectors edition of this game from Strictly Limited Games, because I love doing unboxing videos. And I grew up reading their comics every Sunday from the Sunday newspaper. But I love the look and feel of this game, and I'm alright playing beat em up games by myself, since all my friends just do Fortnite and CoD. I really want to cosplay as Astrix one day. Oh and awesome review as always.
@@IDreamofIndie I will, they said it will ship on the 15th of this month, but I have a feeling it will ship next year (just like Limited Run Games) but hey, I can wait. Sorry for the long text.
@@IDreamofIndie Ah you will be the first to know. I'll post it on my Twitter and tag you. And I love chatting with people too. That's why I have a podcast.
I've been keeping an eye on this one for nostolgia's sake. And it sounds like it was about what I expected! Great animation and decent gameplay, but very barebones feature. Also, getting a local second player will be tough. BUT the steam version will probably cheaper, and that has remote play, so maybe I can drag someone in. I want to support this one because I feel like this is the direction the series should go in. Macroids (as far as I can tell) is a small company, I don't think they should be trying to design 3D platformers like xxl and xxl 2 when a well animated 2D beat em up suits the series WAY better.
While the gameplay doesn't really vibe with me (I don't play a lot of beat 'em ups) and it's a pity that you don't get anything like levelling up or variety, it seems pretty decent for a beat 'em up, and it might be nice for a brawler fan or a fan of the original comics to play in shorter sessions. But you're right in that does seem like it would be better with a friend. But I will agree that I love that visual style, the audio, and the animations. I think they're great. Thanks for the review.
The game was certainly not as fun without a friend (That is the case with most brawlers...) but with a player 2 I did enjoy it despite some repetition.
Personally, I don't think RPG mechanics add much to beat-em-ups because the gameplay is going to be balanced to provide a steady difficulty curve either way. If the player can level up, baddies will auto-level to match, so what's the point?
That's totally fair! Personally in a longer form game like this I thought it would have been nice to at least feel like I was getting stronger, gaining new weapons, adding new abilities but I also like more traditional straightforward brawlers too. Just in this particular case the game was very long so I could have seen them doing more with it.
Asterix: He'll be hunting boars with his bare hands. Obelix: Huh??? Is there another way? :D .... well that nicely summarizes why you can't pick up weapons :)
by toutatis!! the art and animation looks super charming! :) but it looks pretty basic as a game unfortunately. either way, asterix is the biggest part of my childhood and i love seeing it pop up every now and again!
That's awesome! I would see a comic once in awhile and can faintly recall some of the games, but I was never huge into the franchise. Fun game though, and always neat to learn about a property that resonates with so many.
"You can't take weapons" Sis... this is Astérix & Obélix, not Robocop, they use fist and magic potions, I know it's mostly popular in Europe and not USA unlike Tintin, but no, it's normal, they don't use weapons that often. x) But yeah it misses some things sadly :/ The studio behind it is young, I guess that's why.
One big thing (especially for beat em ups) for this game is... enemies don't have invincible periods... like ever. Even when they lay on the ground, you can just smack them and keep the flow going.
Some can block your attack tho, hell there's even a lot of enemies able to block your grab. But still, yeah that's pretty cheap and somehow makes the game too easy.
Asterix & Obelix is my childhood and I love reading the comics but Beat em' Ups have come along way so naturally I would compare this to what we have now- Streets of Rage 4, River City Girls, and Dragon's Crown. And seems like the game while artistically nice, is just 1989 Final Fight, and that's pretty mediocre from a gaming aspect. It's on my radar but my expectations from this review is very low, I appreciate the review at anycase, very informative.
Why can't you pick weapons?, because its not in the characters to use them, Asterix may have a sword, but never uses it for combat, they don't need to.
Yeah I get that and it's totally fair but at the same time it is an arcade style brawler. Mario wouldn't attack the princess but he can in smash brothers.
Using weapons would go against the whole concept of Asterix & Obelix. While it IS an iconic mechanic in beat em ups Asterix & Obelix never use weapons when they clamp the romans. I mean Asterix notoriously has that decorative sword that he never uses.
im a big fan of asterix but this game looks like they just briefly described asterix to a game developer. The art is a little off too, at least to my eyes. But I'm glad to see that Asterix and Obelix is still going strong! :D
If you knew the characters you wouldn't expect them to grab any weapons. They're Asterix and Obelix, they don't need nothing more than their bare hands to beat those romans. It wouldn't fit the characters at all if they use weapons. On the game itself, it's just a bland game, it gets repetitive too quickly.
Everybody who has read adterix know tehy use theor fist soon ssterix zip his magic potion obelix don"t neen it cuz he fell in caultron full of magic potion made by panoramix when he was little
Will you be smacking around soldiers in Slap Them All? Thanks so much for all you do for indie developers, publishers, and I Dream of Indie!
With my mother and I being pretty big Asterix fans, I think I might get her this for Christmas. Then we can both enjoy it together.
That's wonderful I hope you enjoy!!
Why can't Asterix pick an axe ? Is that a real question ? Because of the same reason Asterix can't use a kamehameha : it does not fit the character !
Thanks so much for checking out the video!
Yeah that's not how you see Asterix and Obelix fight in the comic. Why bother picking weapon when you already have the power of magic potion at your side?
oh man what a blast from the past, i still have a box full of my tin tins and astrix & Obelix all the books :D
So cool!! I don't know anyone who has something like that.
And Lucky Luke let's not forget ma man 😄

The arcade game is still my favorite, so many coins were spent in it almost 30 years ago.
Nice!!

I think it was a smart decision for this franchise as well. Good call on the Steam version I love the remote play option!!

This game has an intriguing aesthetic
They did a really good job on the art!

It's always been popular in Quebec too, we just all loved it ever since the 60s at the very least...

Level 1-5 has a screen glitch when crossing the first bridge. The screen jumps when using attack button. It has bugs, and needs a update.

Looks similar as the arcade game.
Only with better cell shaded in game graphics

Is this remake from 92 Konami game ???
No
Asterix & Obelix didn't use weapons.
And Mario never fights the princess but he does in Smash. It's a brawler game so I think it would have been fine haha

game needs more variety imo seems like it will get boring fast,
I do think some more variety could have really put this one over the top because it is fun!
