    Did you double check that you didn't have a tooth count mis-match between the starter and the ring gear? Lycoming ring gears come in 122 and 149 tooth varieties. You have to have a starter that matches the ring gear or what you showed here will happen.

    Know what you mean about supply chain issues - aircraft I use was AOG for seven weeks this summer awaiting an engine part (UK).

    There is a reason for the damage. What was it? I'm guessing that the pitch of the ring gear and starter gear were dissimilar. I have a hard time believing that it was "just cheap".
