It doesn't matter on how much or how little training one gets. It's all on the person's mindset. If your mind isn't set to be aware of potential hazards when operating equipment, you are going to have accidents. I've first used a skid steer that from the factory had no roll cage when I was 8. I've moved a lot of stuff with it having some close calls. 30 years later I still use that same skid steer often enough. At the factory I've worked at for 11 years now I have never crashed or spilled anything from a forklift. I've seen many other forklift operators of many different levels of experience crash or spill loads. Others do really well with little to no experience.

Fork certification really is nothing but that's how some companies have always done it for these positions. I'm sure they shut the " Yard" down but Retail is in an independent location..there are always accidents you never heard of, his race has no additional impact..yes sad, but no one remembers all the others and couldn't care less
To some of these stores, being certified means watching a short training video and taking a quiz. They really doesn't want him to succeed, training should last a month or two until he is comfortable operating the forklift and know the danger and safety awareness of the position.
Very sad. Probably should have shut down after the fact. Accidents do happen though. Even experienced operators make mistakes. Hopefully there will be thorough investigation into what happened.

It takes practice to get good on a forklift, certification means diddle, and most people don't have a forklift in their garage so it should be up to the employer to provide a safe means of practice or possibly a buddy system for greenhorns.

I was a Department manager at menards for 7 years and “trained” on forklifts and order selectors. The training is a 10 question test on the computer and 15 minutes of seat time with a DM... and then you are on your own in a store where danger is at every corner due to menards lack of operation skills and overstocking plans. Gaylen Heckman is the chief of operations for menards, and is also 100% responsible for the death of this young man. This has been an on going problem with stacking lumber for DECADES... Gaylen makes upwards of $400,000 a year. (3 levels below John menard) but John is too cheap to spend the money on mods to properly stack lumber, drywall, and OSB in their warehouse. I hope they are sued and forced to properly train their equipment operators to keep EVERYONE on the property safe...RIP
I worked at Menards years back and the receiving department managers trained me hands on slowly (with them by my side) for 2 months before giving me the test and certifying me. Maybe you should’ve been a better manager and train your team members. Thanks to Menards and my managers I got 2 years of forklift experience added to my resume. You just sucked as a manager.

Absolutely. The rules clearly state in the DOT handbook that the dock ramp should be up and the dock door closed before driver pulls away. Spotted trailers get fifth wheel locks to ensure safety. A bundle of wood is heavy, but how does it tip over the forklift?

I worked at a summer camp where a child died of a medical issue. They didn't close the camp. They provided support.

Not only did they remain open while he was laying lifeless on the ground, they didn’t offer support for their coworkers, they didn’t send condolences to his family- they carried on, expected their employees to work knowing he was in there dead. That’s fucking sick. James was a human being.

I operate a forklift and NONE of our wood pallets are strapped coming off the trailers, they’re stacked 14-16 pallets high.
