It doesn't matter on how much or how little training one gets. It's all on the person's mindset. If your mind isn't set to be aware of potential hazards when operating equipment, you are going to have accidents. I've first used a skid steer that from the factory had no roll cage when I was 8. I've moved a lot of stuff with it having some close calls. 30 years later I still use that same skid steer often enough.
At the factory I've worked at for 11 years now I have never crashed or spilled anything from a forklift. I've seen many other forklift operators of many different levels of experience crash or spill loads. Others do really well with little to no experience.

Fork certification really is nothing but that's how some companies have always done it for these positions. I'm sure they shut the " Yard" down but Retail is in an independent location..there are always accidents you never heard of, his race has no additional impact..yes sad, but no one remembers all the others and couldn't care less

To some of these stores, being certified means watching a short training video and taking a quiz. They really doesn't want him to succeed, training should last a month or two until he is comfortable operating the forklift and know the danger and safety awareness of the position.

My forklift certification at my current job was "pick this empty pallet up and put it on the rack, reset, and take the pallet off the rack". It takes practice to get good on a forklift, certification means diddle, and most people don't have a forklift in their garage so it should be up to the employer to provide a safe means of practice or possibly a buddy system for greenhorns.

Its obviously not a "Labor Shortage" its a "Qualified Labor Shortage". Companies want to pay people the lowest wages possible and a lot of forklift operators aren't going to work for $10 an hour because things like this can happen and people can die. But yeah "labor shortage".

I was a Department manager at menards for 7 years and “trained” on forklifts and order selectors. The training is a 10 question test on the computer and 15 minutes of seat time with a DM... and then you are on your own in a store where danger is at every corner due to menards lack of operation skills and overstocking plans. Gaylen Heckman is the chief of operations for menards, and is also 100% responsible for the death of this young man. This has been an on going problem with stacking lumber for DECADES... Gaylen makes upwards of $400,000 a year. (3 levels below John menard) but John is too cheap to spend the money on mods to properly stack lumber, drywall, and OSB in their warehouse. I hope they are sued and forced to properly train their equipment operators to keep EVERYONE on the property safe...RIP
