Gateway Arch - To the Top of the Arch

- Park Junkie finds his way to Gateway Arch National Park & heads straight to the top of the world famous Arch…
While this park is considered somewhat controversial, (it probably would have best remained a national memorial) a good time can be had on its grounds nevertheless.
Gateway Arch has a number of historically significant structures & the St Louis area is after all, the Gateway to the West… So it has that going for it… which is nice.
The park is a perfect stop on a cross-country drive, & is a prime spot for a quick stretch of the legs after endless hours in ye ‘ol metal coffin.
Folks who plan on visiting the Arch would benefit from doing a bit or research prior to their visit & no better source exists than Park Junkie’s very own guide to Gateway Arch, found at the link below.

Yea! The Patk Junkie is BACK! Happy to see ya Todd C!
Yeah Lynn! Thanks for the warm welcome!
Nice footage PJ. I had the pleasure of checking out this unique NP Back in November of this year, 2023. Your coverage was nice. Miss your work. Cheers from Oregon

Thanks Hank! Life does happen... Thanks for your warm wishes. 🤙
Welcome back!!! 😊👍👍👍
Thanks Jacque!
Good morning Todd. We have missed you here in Yellowstone....Be safe.
Thanks Margaret Thatcher! I'll be back up to Yellowstone.. not soon, but soonish. 🙏
Great tour, Todd. You are an absolute master at what you do.
Thank you Dave, I truly appreciate the fine compliment. 🙏
Actually I was thinking today. I haven't seen park junkie in a while. Really glad you're back!!!!
Thanks for thinking of me Kathy! Cheers
Thank you for always being so thorough.
Thanks for the complement. I try to be a good man... & thorough... 😊
We visited for the 1st time in May this year, and I have to admit I found the Arch fascinating! The VC was absolutely amazing, I think we spent 3 hours there. I fell in love with St. Louis 😀
Yep, the VC is a wonderland of cool information!
Welcome back young man. Thought you had bought it.
Well, I didn't buy much aside from a one-way trip to the desert... Where I became hopelessly lost. This happens 🤷♂️ Thanks for the kind welcome back 🤙
Terrific video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Cheers
YAY ur back Park Junkie🎉 looking fwd to the next adventure!
Cool! Let’s roll… 🤙
Welcome back. Good tour as I don't see myself there, especially in that pod, that you didn't look all that comfortable in either. Nice view.
Well, I'm okay in the pod... but they are certainly odd. Luckily, it's only 4 minutes to the top... 😳
Yay! You’re back! This was cool- Ive not seen this in person. Thanks for sharing this! 😎🥾🥾
Thank you! Glad y'all are still having fun on this interweb place... Yes, a strange, yet cool scene for sure!
Good to see you back! Been checking and checking😏 then up you pop in my neck of the woods! Great!
Oh thanks! I do enjoy the smell of the deciduous woods back here in the midwest. Especially during the fall…
Missed ya! Glad your back. I visited the arch in 1985. We were there on a windy day and I could feel the arch shaking in the wind! 😮 Ha ha, I thought you were going for a swim!
Yes! They say that is a thing... I didn't feel that on my visit, either time. But winds were light the other day, and it was just rainy the first time up. I bet that way fun though eh?!? I took a raincheck on the swim... maybe in a different park. 🤔
Thought you were MIA. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Jason 🤙
Good to see you back, dude.
Hey, thanks dude...
So good to see you! Really interesting tour...the pods were a little unnerving if you're at all claustrophobic 😳
Thanks Elaine! Yes, these things would be a bit concerning if one were claustrophobic... Luckily, I slept in a trunk for years on the road, so I'm good. 😁😁😁 just kidding... kind of.
I have visited a few times, most recently in June with the family. I do like the visitor center and museum. Amazing view everytime! Thanks for the video!
Nice! That museum is superb in my opinion. Something fun for everyone... Thanks for watching!
So cool! Drove past this many times over the years heading west on 70 but never stopped. Didn’t know there was a way to the top other than the stairs. Thanks!
I drove by it a number of times before pulling in about ten years back. Then I just started pulling in every time for a rest under the trees... But the trip up is a unique thing, for sure. Cheers
Welcome back, Todd! I once visited the Arch back in the late 1990's. The pods are new, cause I remember going up to the top of the arch in this rickety metal box elevator contraption that reminded me of those old time elevators that were more like cages. Even had an operator. Spooky ride up too at the time. They still have those little windows too! LOL.
No kidding eh? That is wild... I recall a few elevators like that when I was a kid. How cool those were... & can you imagine a job as an elevator operator...? Stuck in that cage all day... Spooky for sure! Thanks for the warm welcome Linda!
pods are the same old rickety pods, just new paint. 🙂
"Open the Pod Bay Doors HAL,......."
Lower the Globe! 😂😂😂
We were recently in St Louis. Only 3 or 4 days ago. We originally planned on visiting this site but were told that you need reservations for the pods. As it was a miserably cold and windy day we decided to skip it this time. Will hopefully visit in the future. It was interesting to see the pods and the view from the top. Thanks for the tour!
I rolled in without a reservation and was able to jump right on the next upward bound pod. Reservations may be necessary during busy times, but that was not my experience. It certainly helps to have a nice clear day!
Woohoo!
It's a little odd seeing your video from a city! Have driven past the arch twice. Looks like next time we should check it out (in the off season, looks nice and empty!)
Yeah, I'm not a city boy these days, but it's a great place to visit... 😎 & yes, it's worth the stop if you're driving past... I wouldn't exactly suggest it as a "destination"...
@@theparkjunkie Enjoyed driving through St Louis in August 2021 and picking up dinner near the Washington University of STL campus. Cool college town vibes over there.
Just got back from visiting the arch myself. Loved the arch and the museum. It is well worth the trip.
Awesome! Yeah, the arch is way cool, and it is actually a pretty incredible museum huh? Not sure I would advocate its national park status, but well... it is.
Those pods are certainly unique. I rode up the arch around 50 years ago!
I am curious if you have visited the southwest parks of Mesa Verde, Canyon de Chelly, and Chaco Culture? I've been to Mesa but not the other two. Thanks and enjoy your next adventure!
Thanks Tim. Yes, I've been to MV many times. Need to do a video soon, but not sure how good my footage is, as it's been a few years since I was there. & I've been to Canyon de Chelly once, but not Chaco yet. I probably have some bad footage from de Chelly, but it probably sucks. So I'll need to go back... darn it... 🤷♂️
Thanks Todd ,drove by it a few years ago on the way West and didn't have a chance to stop .Love getting to see what is all about ,thank you so .Keep up the great reporting and explorations!Cheers.
Well just hit it next time Zavijava! Thanks for hanging out with us! Cheers
Another great video by the Park Junkie! Man, where have you been? Miss your hikes. Where are you headed from the Arch?
Hey J! So, if I told you I was abducted by aliens on motorcycles... well, that may just be a tall tale... but a good one huh! Motorcycles were involved though... True story.
I am in the Eastern US for a bit, gonna try to do some cool stuff back this way for a month or two. Then... ?🤔?
Been there done it and seen it.😁
But did you swim in the Mississippi? 😂😳😂
🤣
Hey man, good to see you back in action. Quite the change in scenery since last time, but with kind of the same theme...getting up to a place with a view. Do I detect a hint of claustrophobia when you're riding in that pod? 🙂 I visited back in 2002, it's an amazing experience but I was a little disappointed because the windows in the observation area were in need of a good cleaning. When I was there the river was in flood stage and the water was lapping at the edge of the riverside walk. Anywho, thanks for taking us along!
Hey Yawn! Glad to get back in action... The scene from the top is spectac! I was stoked to have the shadow on the scene, as I really like working shadows into images. Sucks the windows were all smudgy when you were there, but the flood water had to be a trip! Thanks for tagging along... 🤙
Hi Park Junkie It great to see you and I hope your time off was good for you. That arch is an architectural wonder I think, and while not like your usual videos it was still interesting and people who travel should visit it for break from all of the running from bears, 🙂
🤣🤣🐻🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
Thanks Simon! I am stoked to be back in the mix... Got lost in the desert there for a few weeks. & yeah, I must admit it is nice to be in a zone where I don't need to worry about those bears.... 😳
@@theparkjunkie Lol :-)
I always wondered how the arch looked, once it was completed. Thanks for the fascinating tour !❤️
It sure stands out huh? Thanks for joining us!
What a bizarre Park. Something tells me there was a powerful politician from MO who demanded this be designated a NP in exchange for his vote on something lol
Yeah, if I recall correctly, I think it was bundled up in a credit bill or something... & yeah, there were definitely some back room discussions on this one.
Did you find yourself unsteady at the top- I felt the floor had a tilt to the sides. I like that they re-did the entry way to the doors - those pods are weird but they are practical. I was confused - they changed it in 2018 to an NP, when I went it was a memorial.
Indeed, the floor at the top is still curved, mostly up & down, north to south, continuing the trajectory or the arch, but there may also be a slight east to west tilt as well. It would make sense.
& yes, Feb of 2018, it was changed to a NP…
@@theparkjunkie Disoriented the crap out of me at first - it was like the first days back from a cruise when you don't quite have your land legs back yet :-)
@@JimAllen-Persona Ah yes… the ‘ol sea stagger… 😵💫
Nice!! That was a great visit to another one of our Nation's treasures. We appreciate you highlighting a park that we might get to. We have missed your adventures. We are glad your back on youtube. Any motorcycle trip plans in your future? Have you thought about any of the BDR rides that might include National Park visits? Just curious. Safe travels 🤘🤙
Oh boy, Do I Have Any Moto Plans?!?
Yes, as a matter of fact, some friends & I just rode the southern section of the Utah BDR last month during my absence. I have a good amount of video from the trip and am working on a film, but it's taking some time due to the length of the trip & the fact that I'm collecting footage from 6 different people. We spent four days on that section. Fun! So yeah, stay tuned! Thanks for the warm welcome back!
That was cool but those pods look claustrophobic.
They also look like something out of Logan's Run.
I can't imagine being in those things with four other people... 😳
Lol.....edibles of some form. Certainly need in urban travels
No doubt eh?!? 😎😁😎
Did ya shave??? Lol
Cleaning up for the election season... Hoping to score a Senate seat or something... 😁
