I have tried 9 of the cartridges listed. I do patten test but only for evenness of spread rather than % of pellets in the 30” circle. I also do real world comparisons of actually shooting at decoying pigeons and my ranking would give very different results . For example the Gamebore Pigeon Extreme gives me the highest lethality rate with virtually no flappers or wounded birds. It is fairly high on recoil and cost and can be overkill on closer birds so I do not use them very much. Just goes to show all sorts of issues in picking the “ best “ cartridge for a particular purpose. Good video with interesting information thanks for all the hard work.
Hi Simon, thanks for your comment. Trying to create a framework for evaluating cartridges is definitely not easy. I chose pattern retention as it is easy to measure and from the testing we have done seems to be consistent over different guns. As you mentioned an even pattern distribution is really key but not easy to quantify in order to measure and doesn't necessarily transfer from one gun to another. I'm interested to hear your rankings if you would care to share them?
It’s good to see a well thought out test where 5 cartridges are shot and averaged out. This gives a fair comparison, however there is no measure of pattern quality. This can be measured by the number of 5 “ voids in the pattern on average. It’s a lot more work but a reliable measure of real world performance, as the more even patterns will have fewer voids.
Thank you for the kind words. That's a great idea with regards to gauging pattern quality, I had not thought of anything like that. One of the main reasons that I use pattern retention is that this transitions better from one gun to another whereas the quality of the pattern seems to vary.
Interesting. The 2 I use are in 2nd and 15th place. I went from second to 15th.....🤔🤔🤔 15th place are an extra 30 notes a slab too. Just goes to show. Thanks for this vid.
OK so these percentages show the pattern percentage but we don't know how many pieces of shot are in each pattern as they are all different weights. If you look at the weight of them and work out the percentage by weight that each one is putting on target you get a very different result. Also the heavier loads will be putting more lead just outside the pattern circle and this can still kill in the real world. More lead in the pattern is obviously better as a denser pattern will give better kills. So I've worked them out as follows with their new position. The best is still Eley HV being 32g and retaining a good percentage but the others move around quite a bit. Position, Name, Weight, Shot Size, Percentage, Weight in Pattern 1 was 1, Eley Pigeon HV 32g 6 63.17% 20.21g 2 was 5, Fiocchi Pigeon 32g 6 60.36% 19.31g 3 was 6, Trust Super Star Classic Gold 32g 5.5 60.29% 19.29g 4 was 8, Jocker LA 32g 5.5 60.11% 19.23g 5 was 9, Hull Special Pigeon 32g 6 58.46% 18.70g 6 was 3, Empire Lead 30g 6 62.18% 18.65g 7 was 2, Hull Superfast Pigeon 29g 6 63.17% 18.31g 8 was 7, Eley Pigeon Select 30g 6 60.26% 18.07g 9 was 12, Gamebore Clear Pigeon 32g 6 56.41% 18.05g 10 was 4, Express Pigeon Power 29g 6 61.42% 17.81g 11 was 13, RC Romagnola 31g 5.5 55.96% 17.34g 12 was 10, Cheddite Minifree Shots 30g 5.5 57.60% 17.28g 13 was 16, Gamebore Pigeon Extreme 34g 5 50.55% 17.18g 14 was 11, Gamebore Velocity Pigeon 30g 6 57.20% 17.16g 15 was 14, Express Pigeon Special 30g 6 53.23% 15.97g 16 was 15, Gamebore Clear Pigeon 30g 6 51.42% 15.42g
Are you going to start up your videos again mate?
Was looking forward to the 12 vs 20
Hull super fast pigeon are my personal favourite, relatively cheap as well
gamebore pigeon extreme is my number one cartridge really good at long range birds
I have shot Empire for a days out now. Really rate them!
We have been really impressed by them. They performed really well in this test as well as for our game load test.
I shoot Empire for clay....excellent cartridge in my opinion

@@shoot_straight my ranking would be 9 , Express Pigeon Special - 8 , Eley Pigeon Select - 7 , Hull Special Pigeon - 6 Express Pigeon Power -5 Gamebore Clear Pigeon 30 gm - 4 Eley Pigeon HV - 3 Gamebore Clear Pigeon 32 gm - 2 Hull Superfast Pigeon - 1 Gamebore Pigeon Extreme . Basically no surprise that the heavier loads tend to kill better in my humble opinion.

Really enjoyed the video, can vouch for the Pigeon HV being a brilliant cartridge. That’s all I use now !
Any update on when the part 2 will be out ?
Thank you. I've done all the filming but I just need to finish editing. I'm hoping that it should be out this coming week.
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Good to see a measured 40 yards for all those who claim they shoot pigeons at 80 to 120 yards which I've seen in posts recently! 😂
Interesting stuff 👍👍
Thanks, we're glad you enjoyed it.

Why not shoot the cartridges over a chronograph to get the velocity
We did that in part 2 of the test. Here's a link to that video ua-cam.com/video/NiqX27g1gas/v-deo.html
