The driving force of this band for me has always been Ian Paice on the drums. What speed and power, and he can play a groove so deep your Jeep could get stuck in it.
Absolutely - every song on Made In Japan literally blows away the studio versions - which are GREAT - until you hear them live. It’s the same with the MKIII lineup Made In Europe. The fact is - back in the day NOBODY beat a live DP show - and I saw them many times back then.
Just saw them with Yes as warm up Saturday night! They opened with this song. Played a lot off their new album and did a great version of Lazy. Encore was Green Onions into Hush and closed with Black Night! Sounded very tight. The new guitar player and Don Airey on keyboards was fantastic!
… The drummer 🥁 is a monster, a total legend on the sticks, so big shout out to Ian Paice, who is still playing strong,! … "Made in Japan" is the best damn live album in music history! 🎸🎹🥁🎤 Thank You
Glad that you noticed Roger Glover's brilliant bass lines 😊 They are quite tricky actually. You should definitely check out the isolated bass track of this song. You might get surprised how hard it is to play like Roger plays it. Great reaction, as always ❤❤❤ Thank you so much and greetings from Finland 🎉
I agree, RG gets too limited credit on average. He was a solid, dependable bass player and together with Paice were Purple's steel backbone, but he also played some technically really good lines. Check out "No, No, No" on the Fireball album.
Wow is right, this entire album contains for me, and many others, the definitive versions of those great songs, as they do stay true to the most of the studio originals but are less restrained and really let go at times. This entire album is their best lineup at their very best live. Bangers all the way through. If you want to see Ritchie Blackmore just go off, do his live blast off in front of a quarter million fans at the legendary California Jam in 1974. This was the Mach 3 lineup but it did not matter to those coming to hear those monstrous riffs and the hot new Burn album and lineup. Try You Fool No One from that concert, first Jon Lord on organ and then Ritchie on his famous Fender Strat just go off, Blackmore has the crowd mesmerized in one of his very best extended solos. This song, in a slightly different version, is also on their Made in Europe live album and that guitar solo is arguably as good or better than the one caught on video mentioned above. These would enlighten both of you to the incredible talent Ritchie was back in the day. I saw that tour twice and it is very much worth your time to see/hear greatness. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥
Hi Nick & Lex, I was a keyboardist in the 1970s and when this song was released in 1972 and heard Jon Lord playing I was hooked😎the song is one of my top songs. The Live version of Child in Time is Incredible
My older sister turned me on to Black Sabbath in the late 60’s. My other (even older) sister turned me on to the Carpenters. I grew up in an eclectic household. 😄
No overdubs on made in Japan, only one guitar just the 5 of them - exactly as performed warts n all, that's why it stands head and shoulders above all other so called live albums -originally for release in Japan only but released worldwide after the success of Machine Head
Hi guys awesome reaction. I have a story about this album , as a 12 yr old in 73 and just getting into Purple. I couldn't afford the full double album so i went halves with my mate and we bought the album together and then split it . I had the first part and he had the second then we swapped after about 6months. Brilliant album from Deep Purple one of my favorite all time albums. ❤
OMG you're both so awesome. Best Deep Purple album imo. Just has the most incredible energy. And Lex... your head shaking back and forth when you sing "Starrrrrrrrrrrrrr" is adorable.
I loved that you guys enjoyed the song which was I did long time ago ( more than 40 years) at some parties or with some friends. Those times were magical The eternal battle between Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple fans.
Hi Guys ! ..What a live album [ and a double vinyl one at that ! ] Superb concert. It was totally mind blowing in the 70's to hear this. Imagine ...No Metallica ...No Nirvana ... No Heavy Devy Devin Townsend . This was pure Rock blasting through your speakers ! Wow ! The remastered black cover album [ instead of the famous gold ] is brilliant. They did an amazing remaster of this live concert and we even got extra tracks including a live "Black Night". Love Highway Star. What an opener !!! Boy ..to be there !! Byee Jim X
Grew up with Genesis, Deep Purple and Yes as my main bands. Watching all their live videos is quite something but I think Deep Purple in Denmark 1972 is the best - not great quality but definitely worth a watch.
Brilliant! Although I've heard this so, so many times, I've only just realised how near-on impossible it would be to fit a few more notes in there somewhere! Imagine getting there for one of the morning gigs, after a good night out previously, and this was the show-opener? Classic! FYI: The track was written on a bus on the way to one of their gigs on our South Coast after enquiries from a Press Reporter travelling with them, on how they go about writing a song? Created the basics right there in front of him, finished it off at rehearsals and then played it in the gig for him that night!
Hola chicos! Cuando tenía 12 años (hoy 60) me había obsesionado por escuchar este álbum y en especial este tema; no entendía ni una palabra en inglés (y sigo sin entender) así que gracias por la reacción a Deep Purple y gracias por los subtítulos.
One of the things I like about this album is that, maybe because they only had eight tracks to record to, Gillan's voice is quite dry and focused in the mix. You get to hear how good his live vocals actually were at this time, even if he wasn't happy with his performances.
DP were always better live than in the studio imo as the band were able to improvise and show their excellent musicianship. Roger Glover's stellar bass on this live album was exceptional, very underrated musician.
Back in the day I purchased this double album with a lot of sweat and tears. I was teenager in Argentina and money was scarce…boy I played the crap out of it haha…phenomenal display of talent.
Florida State Trooper clocked my Corvette at 138 MPH with this song playing on the tape deck, back in the day on the nearly empty turnpike extension in SW Miami (it had just opened for public use a few days earlier). Funny thing that Chevrolet said the top end for my car was 123 and I still had pedal left. He let me go with a warning because I slowed down, pulled over and waited for him to catch up to me from where he was pulled over behind some palm trees. He said that he never would have been able to catch me. How many tickets did this song inspire ?
Lexi's air-guitar was nearly perfect, albeit on a miniature guitar, or maybe a mandolin. A womandolin, let's call it. An air womandolin. His voice is like a wild lizard. Jesus Lizard. Now it all makes sense. Great jam y'all!
Good to see you again. I remember when Machine Head was new. Just awesome.- I always thought Deep Purple was a Hard- or heavy blues band. By the way, your singing skills are improving. I should go on now and listen to Space trucking and some Carpenters.- Yours Tomas Agua
This is my all time version of Highway Star...Made In Japan....this album will always be one of the all time live concert performances ever. Also most notable Lazy snd Smoke On The Water and how can we not forget Sweet Child In Time ....Classic of Classics
There are 2 live Version. A few month before this one, there were recorded by bbc. In concert, a smaller venue. Check out that different live one. Organ solo seems Sound being worked out because of bbc recording, jon lord might have. But Ritchie. Ritchies climax solo is exploding! Deep Purple in concert 1972 Intro Mike Harding Musically it is Bach Harmonie, Mozart appregios. And Rock'n Roll wise as they said on IN ROCK : A few roots replanted 🤷
A few signing lessons here and there Alexia and Nick has a Bassist & a signer in the house... Then find a drummer & you could start a Rush Cover Band 😮😮
Hi guys , really enjoying you're channel. A couple of songs you might like are ' Age of Changes' and 'One Nation one Sun ' by Uriah Heep. off there 2023 album 'Chaos and Colour'. It was a nice surprise discovery album for me. Think you might like the album. Listen to the end , as we say !
One of the most amazing things about this live album (Made in Japan) is that it was recorded by the infamous "Rolling truck Stones thing" ie a mobile studio in a van. And due to its limitations, wait for it... it was mixed live and recorded directly to stereo.
@@RushfanUK I believe the confusion is the album from which Highway Star was taken was "Machine Head" which with numerous other tracks also done on "Live in Japan" was indeed recorded in 1971 in Montreux in The Rolling Stones Mobile, hence the lyrics to "Smoke on the Water" and it was after the fire they moved to The Grand Hotel which they hated....and The Rolling Stones Mobile as the lyrics said " The Rolling truck Stones thing just outside ".
However he did sing with Deep Purple in a few shows....and the London Symphony as well. Dio was singing songs from the Butterfly Ball.... "Sitting in a Dream" and "Love is All". Great performance and worth checking it out.
If I was ever to afford to buy a 67 Mustang Fastback, with fat meaty tires in the back and Chrome Centerline Wheels on all 4's, and the best stereo system inside . . . THIS would be the 1st song (and version) I'd play. And loud enough for my neighbors to enjoy it, when they don't want to (like when THEY are forcing me to listen to _their_ crappy selections) 😛 "Ooh, it's a killing machine It's got everything Like a driving power Big fat tires and everything!" And lookie! Lexi singing the words! Haha! You go GERL! \m/ Vocalists: Rod Evans (1968-1969) Ian Gillan (1969-1973, 1984-1989, 1992-present) David Coverdale - lead and backing vocals (1973-1976) Glenn Hughes - bass, backing and lead vocals (1973-1976) Tommy Bolin - guitars, backing and occasional lead vocals (1975-1976; died 1976) Joe Lynn Turner (1989-1992) Alexia (2024)

Both Deep Purple and Rainbow sound so much better live than in studio.
Completely agree
Well they sound damn good in studio so I guess that's really saying something!
And sound great with headphones
There were NO OVERDUBS on this album! Everything you heard was Blackmore!!!!
this is the definitive version of this song
This is the version I know. My father owned the CD and I would play this track on repeat when I was young
Highway Star live blows the studio Version out of the water
Made in Japan greatest live album ever for me DP at there very best
Bass that's what you took from that classic 😂
Absolutely - every song on Made In Japan literally blows away the studio versions - which are GREAT - until you hear them live. It’s the same with the MKIII lineup Made In Europe. The fact is - back in the day NOBODY beat a live DP show - and I saw them many times back then.
Rock giants, just a force of nature when they played live. 🤘🤘
Ritchie Blackmore, Master of the Stratocaster
I've seen Deep Purple, twice! Such good shows !
1973 , Jacksonville coliseum
, 15 years old, ELO and deep purple life changing event , and now here I am. Oh yeah, tickets were like 6 bucks.
Just saw them with Yes as warm up Saturday night! They opened with this song. Played a lot off their new album and did a great version of Lazy. Encore was Green Onions into Hush and closed with Black Night! Sounded very tight. The new guitar player and Don Airey on keyboards was fantastic!

If you are not juiced up by the time Ritchie rips into it, you must be dead!

Deep Purple was one of my favorite groups since their hit Hush 1968 which I paid 25 cents for at the record store
Hush. . .me too
Always so good live..what a band.
Rock on!
It doesn't get much better. Great band with top tier musicians.

The album Machine Head and this song was such a huge part of my younger years. It was a driving song for me, for years lol.

Aww thanks so much for your kind words and support!! So glad we could share this with you!! 💖💖
Just saw DP and YES on Friday.
Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple the holy triad of rock music🤘
And Bad Company
What a great sound! This album was the first time I heard DP and it blew my mind!🤘
I loved that you guys enjoyed the song which was I did long time ago ( more than 40 years) at some parties or with some friends.
Those times were magical
The eternal battle between Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple fans.
At the solo intro when you hear Blackmore flip to the bridge pickup with that power chord you know shit's gonna happen. Legendary.
They were once the LOUDEST band in the world!!! FACT!
THE best live album of all time!

Spot on observation on Bassist Roger Glover who really gives this song it's "Drive" ( pun intended ) 🙂
Quintessential early 70s rock
Deep Purple for ever!! 💜💜💜💜💜
that's my jam!! oh yeah,,,love you two so much...Kent
Absolute the best edition of highway star, from a cool killer album
Strange kind of woman live in japan is a must
Lexi's air-guitar was nearly perfect, albeit on a miniature guitar, or maybe a mandolin. A womandolin, let's call it. An air womandolin.
His voice is like a wild lizard. Jesus Lizard. Now it all makes sense. Great jam y'all!
It is life!!!
If you like Ian's voice, you should check out the work he did as Jesus on Jesus Christ Superstar. Phenomenal.
Gethsemane. . .I cry every time I listen
CUANTA ENERGÍA TENÍA DEEP PURPLE EN VIVO FANTÁSTICOS!!!💜💜🎸🎸🔥🔥
Great album and thanks for your reaction.
You should try "My Woman From Tokyo" from this album. It's a banger!
Great live version, great reaction, Lex - nice touch with the ice maracas at 3:45
😂😂😂 my specialty!!! 😅
No overdubs, warts and all, 100% live album
“ Strange Kind Of Woman” please guys!!
I have this on Purple Vinyl
j'adore, superbe album, le bon son des années 70👍👍

I love this awesome band. They are still making new music for future fans to rock out to !
I wore this album out back in the seventies.
I am sorry but there was no overdub here.... This was released without any overdubs.
Epic DP performance of one of their classics!
Can I have everything louder than everything else
Undoubtedly the best driving song ever! Jon is such a virtuoso of the keyboards.
Going live, DEEP PURPLE is raw, in your face, let's jam and have a good time!!!
Banger!

Deep Purple in concert 1972 Intro Mike Harding
Musically it is Bach Harmonie, Mozart appregios. And Rock'n Roll wise as they said on IN ROCK :
A few roots replanted
🤷
it's like "Smokin" by Boston
Rock'n !!!
What a way to kick off a show ...
Great album but I can't lie, I prefer listening to the two live BBC sessions from '70 & '72 on the DP In Concert double album.
There are NO overdubs on this album.
Super!!!!!!!!!

Sabían porque hacían los temas largos????
One of the most amazing things about this live album (Made in Japan) is that it was recorded by the infamous "Rolling truck Stones thing" ie a mobile studio in a van. And due to its limitations, wait for it... it was mixed live and recorded directly to stereo.
It was recorded using equipment supplied by Warners Bros that wasn't particularly good, the Stones Mobile was nowhere near it.
No. 1??
Better live
If you listen to ian paice drumming he's doing alot of double timing in this song..
What about watching the chickenfoot version
Found that version recently and it was amazing 👏
So much better than Machine Head!
Have you ever heard Tarkus (Emerson Lake and Palmer)?
Dio was never in Deep Purple and Huges was not brought in as the singer, much as he seems to think he was.
However he did sing with Deep Purple in a few shows....and the London Symphony as well. Dio was singing songs from the Butterfly Ball.... "Sitting in a Dream" and "Love is All". Great performance and worth checking it out.
At least have the decency to wear a deep purple tshirt
If you don't respond to comments by only playing songs that are paid for, how can you expect us to waste our time.
