Bill Wyman had a bass stolen during a Stones tour of New Zealand, I believe during the early eighties (EDIT: it was 1966). The bass was sold on repeatedly, a large number of bass players had owned it for a period of time by the early 90's, just in one town alone. It almost became a rite of passage, if you were worth your salt as a bass player in NZ you had owned Wyman's bass for a period of time. I don't know what happened to the trail, I suspect someone has held on to it.

This clearly put the difference between Paul and George on display Big Time George had a red Les Paul that had been gifted to him I want to say through Eric Clapton but the guitar had been around through different people in the music business George really loved this guitar it can be seen on the get back thing cuz he used it in the Beatles career toward the end. Well it had been stolen they tracked it to a pawn shop in Southern California they got their it had been sold to someone that lived in Mexico they got an address George actually hired I want to say either a half dozen or a dozen legitimate Hitman to go retrieve his guitar. I don't think he actually wanted anyone to get hurt I think he just wanted his guitar back and wanted to be ready for any case scenario especially if you're dealing with anyone in mexico. Because it's a lawless land you never know what what happened there. But that guitar has never been found to this day.

Your story is partly true. George’s estate still has that cherry refinished ‘57 Goldtop Les Paul that Slowhand gave him as a gift. The same guitar that he used to record the solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at George’s request. George bought the Mexican guy who had it a new Les Paul so as to get it back and he did. The guitar belonged to Rick Derringer before. He had sent it to Gibson to get refinished in the more trendy cherry red from the ‘60’s and didn’t like the sound after the refinish so he unloaded it at some store in New York where Slowhand found it.

I don't buy the Notting Hill story for a second. Where was the bass between 1969 and 1972? There are zero photos of it. And by the time of recording his first solo album in early 1970, he had more or less retired the Hofner until Elvis Costello got him to pull it out again in 1989. I think it's obvious that Twickenham is the most likely location for the theft, but since then it's probably been stored in an attic or under a bed somewhere in London. Whoever it was might have tried to sell it, but wouldn't get much for it without revealing its provenance.
And as it was now more than half a century ago, the thief might be in their 70's or 80's. My gut feeling is that when they kick the bucket, their family will discover the bass and try to sell it. Then any decent guitar dealer _should_ recognize it.

I'm sure Paul's stolen guitar is still around somewhere, maybe sold over the years to some unsuspecting guitar enthusiast, and could be standing in the corner of someone's loft, bedroom or cellar waiting to be discovered. That can only happen if the number, if there is one, is known.

@@stratplayr6997 Thanks for the info. I'm not sure though that the guitar is purely left handed. As far as I understand, the headstock is designed to be strung in either way.
A lot of people wonder why this particular Höffner model has such a distinctly shaped body, quite different than other guitars. Well, in the 1970s I used to live near where the Höffner company is situated and knew the family of the owner of the company.
This part of Germany used to have a lot of small businesses specialising in the manufacture of classic stringed musical instruments such as violins. Höffner used to be one of them.
Because the market for stringed instruments was too small Höffner decided in the 1950s to try making guitars. But all their templates, jigs and tools were designed for making classic instruments and it would have been expensive to change them. So they decided to stay with the classic shape for their new guitar.
I was told that the guitar didn't sell well at first, possibly because of its unusual shape. Until 1963 that is, when the Beatles appeared for the first time on TV with Paul playing his Höffner. The company has never looked back since.
