Fantastic! Thank you. And running around Wales scaring the bejesus out of people sounds my idea of fun. I’d would have loved to have gone along. I think 😃👻
Just as captivating also this time around after 3 years. Seems like 300, so much has happened since then. Much needed, thought-provoking and appreciated. Masterful as always, Tony. Thanks so much.
That must have been loads of fun, running about in the woods, but knowing there was someone there, on a mission. I used to go to science fiction conventions and we did "runs" (as in Logan's Run) in costume, but that was like a glorified hide and seek. Out in the woods would be much more terrifying.
Loved this story, Tony. I like the WW I veteran characters…men who probably thought they witnessed the worst horrors via war are now confronted with ancient, Stygian horrors. I hope you use them again in the future.
Funnily enough I do re use characters. Not these ones yet though. You will find Christian Le Cozh In a couple of stories and Gowan Fell appears several times. They could be characters in a Call of Cthulhu game.
Tony, this one is superb! Please consider writing more of these “Lovecraftian” stories. You really captured the essence of the genre. Thanks for your storytelling and your post-story thoughts.
It's in the trees! It's coming! Strange how coincidence creeps up on us. In returning to your tale, after a brief pause, I reverted to my UA-cam history to reload Dark Water, and noticed that the last thing that I had listened to was The Hounds of Love. "So"? What of it? Nothing unusual in that. Then I hear, " it's coming for me through the trees." Or something very like to it. Strange phenomena maybe? Keep letting the weirdness in Tony. Thanks.

The whole time you were reading this, I was seeing it in my mind, and I was thinking what a great film it would make. Seeing those role-playing games would have been so much fun!
I love this one. Excellent folk horror with all the right ingredients - new vs old, mindless horror of WW1 echoed in the ancient horror of the mindless slug that doesn't even have to devour you in order to utterly destroy you, debts of brotherhood, sacrifice and the gift of life and all that. Oh, and of course the darkness itself. Thank you for doing what you do, hey. You've inspired me to gather my household together for a Cthulhu mythos RPG now *chuckles evilly*

This is an awesome story! Great job writing and narrating Tony! I like the background story and the old worship of a much-forgotten entity, remembered only by a few. As a veteran, I totally can relate to the affinity owed to one who saved us. I am drawn to such stories. It has a good and sad ending at the same time. I'm looking forward to listening to this again!

I spent several days in Tintagel years ago, and that would have been a perfect setting for something like this. The layers of history there are deep as you probably know, and presented the opportunity for all manner of possible visitations by some old horror from the caves at the bottom of cliff. Nothing happened though despite my wild imaginings. Oh well, maybe next time!

Very fun, Tony. Love the afterwords, also - well not your tinnitus which sucks a mop but the story of your part in RPG live events is a tale of its own.
Fantastic!! Love this story. In some way, it reminds me of the lottery by Sherly Jackson, which I have only very recently discovered. It is the age of the place. Very small, close nit community. This is the way we have always done things. The strangers come, we summon our gods and offer the strangers to it. No matter who they are. Clearly, the father has no real power or authority as the vicar. They're not christian people. They worship this god of the dark water. And so the father is sort of like a figurehead. I very much feel that he has had his own run-in with the painted men. But could not bring them over, to leave the old religion, the old ways, and embrace a new religion. I was very sad for the fathers end. But glad that he gained strength and courage to help save his son. I'm very curious as to what was written on that slip of paper. Or what was found inside that book. I Just finished listening. And going to listen to it again. 😊❤❤❤❤
Absolutely loved this. Came across this tale quite by chance. Story telling talent in heaps.
