STORYLINE:
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met in Moscow on Saturday with his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko to discuss current economic issues between the two countries.
Tymoshenko said Russia and Ukraine had agreed action plans for nine out of eleven areas of economic cooperation.
"We have a bold schedule of action. And this schedule gives us new impulse and new strength for cooperation," said Tymoshenko.
Putin warned Ukraine over its NATO bid and threatened to terminate lucrative deals with Ukrainian arms and space facilities if the ex-Soviet neighbour joins the alliance.
Ukraine has a massive arms and electronics industry inherited from the Soviet era that relies on contracts with Russia's military and space agencies.
The industry remains state-owned and poorly adjusted to business-oriented relations with the West.
Putin said on Saturday in televised remarks that Ukraine would have to invest heavily into retrofitting its arms industry for production of weapons according to the Western alliance's standards.
"As for sensitive technologies, and first of all high-tech rocket technologies, and some other modern military technologies, we will think beforehand in this case on how to move them, despite any financial expenses for Russia," said Putin.
Moscow vehemently opposes efforts by Ukraine as well as Georgia to gain NATO membership, saying that would jeopardise Russia's security.
