One of many reasons why KL makes a great home base...it's a well-situated, central hub for exploring and experiencing Southeast Asia with lots of inexpensive, short, non-stop flights to almost any place in the region. Thank you for providing examples of flights with costs. Enjoy your videos! Hope you're over your cold soon!

@@et5222 Not yet. I love KL and Penang. I also like Siem Reap, Kompot, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hanoi, Da Lat, Da nang, Ho Chi Min, Bangkok, Ubud, many cities in Phillipines like CDO, Malaybulay, Baguio, Samar and others. Eventually I’d like to find a relationship. I’d favor a Malaysian woman because their passport is similar to US. I don’t know how hard it is to date in Malaysia. Do you know? Thanks Andy, many years ago, being able to jump off to another world in a few hours for not much cost was one of the biggest perks to living in S.E. Asia. Looking forward to your take on Siem Reap, I'm sure it will be different and more worthwhile than most of what we are likely to find.

Very helpful! We are flying from KL to Kuching next February., we are scouting out the city and the parks/caves. We are also going to Penang. I'm very interested in the new infrastructure - reclaimed islands near the airport, new areas near Gurney drive plus I understand there's a new light railway being built on the island.

Thanks for posting this. From KLIA or KLIA2 the possibilities are endless and because the fares are in ringgit, often so very affordable. Just explore the options as you showed. Use a VPN set to Malaysia. I am just back home from a month in Malaysia. My plan was to use rail to get around, however seats do book out so fast and were unavailable. I decided to try buses and glad that I did. Good quality at very inexpensive cost and very comfortable. Just book online. I would love to hear about your experiences with Grab. I used it often and found the service a great way to get around at a very reasonable cost and to chat with the locals who were without exception, warm, welcoming, helpful, kind, honest and just nice people. Thanks to you and your channel.

Hey Andrew. I know these places are a bit more expensive, but they are further, that are worth looking into for flights. They are in Asia
Delhi (India) in the US$300-400 price range round trip out of KUL...3 hours flight
Seoul/Incheon (South Korea) is 8 hours max at a similar price point as Delhi...I happen to like Seoul...but it is pricey.
Additionally, one of the more unique ones in the similar range that is emerging is Jeddah Saudi Arabia. Yes, that place. It is slowly opening up to tourists, and starting to reveal its gems to the outside world... it's culture, it old architecture, and it's people. Yes, you can go as a tourist to Saudi Arabia as of 2018 or so...just before the COVID pandemic hit. Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's gateway, and most Westernized city.

Thank you for the info here. I'm a retired American strongly considering Siem Reap for a retirement destination as well as the Philippines. Haven't considered Malaysia but it too appears very worthy. The super friendly welcoming people in both countries was a huge draw for me and English being enough to get by. Expats on here with many videos caught my attention & your the only one I've seen in Malaysia. --- I have to say Siem Reap really appeals to me all factors considered for my personal criteria. It too has a cheap less than 1 hour flight to Bangkok for fun or affordable quality medical care ! -- ? -- I just think I would like that beautiful city ? Buy a 3 wheel Bajaj tuk tuk for personal transportation. Hauling groceries & 'stuff' keep the sun & rain off + explore the area and the city. --- Just an adventure and all kinds of food available. ---

You might want to consider visiting Jakarta in 2-3 months time for one very specific purpose, that is: boarding the 350 km/h Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Rail.
This is the technology that your native USA squandered so badly, that is : SF - LA HSR fiasco. Yet, Indonesia already has it running. 😂. Its completion is still very much in question. You may not even be able to board it in 10-15 years time when you return home to the US.
Bandung also attracts sizable number of Malaysian tourists. Go figure here why it’s worth-visiting 😊.

The hub is very KL centered unlike other countries with multiple hubs.
Flying from Penang to connect to an onward trip adds around four hours to each journey.
Fares are much higher than they were pre pandemic and the AA charge for checked in luggage seems to be increasing.
On a recent trip back from India to Penang it was easier and cheaper to fly via Bangkok than go via KL.

Fly Dubai (the LCC subsidiary of Emirates) is commencing direct flights between Penang and Dubai in Feb 24. Daily service.
Now if they could restart direct flights to Hanoi (my favourite Asian city) I'd be happy.
KLIA 2 has to be one of the strangest airports in the world. The idea of putting an airport together with a shopping mall sounded a great idea but it ended up with neither really working. Well you paint a rosy picture but Air Asia is not the most customer friendly airlines. They are a low cost airline that nickel and dimes you for almost everything, soon you'll have to pay to use the toilet on board. Even for a savy traveler, Air Asia is known to leave people high and dry. Specially when they cancel a flight. In many cases they only fly one time a day. So one really has to be prepared when being attracted by cheap fares. Penny wise, Pound foolish. Is often the case for far too many but I'm sure you don't want to mention the cons. Btw some of the destinations you've mentioned are really not worth flying to from KL. Like Singapore, why not take a bus. Great price no having to get to the airport a few hours early. Pay a hefty cab to get to and from the airport. A luxury bus is nice from KL to Singapore. Right into the city, no cabs needed. If you add total time, traveling by bus is not bad.

    • @andrewtaylor4558
