Great detail. Thanks for posting
Because his father don't have big IQ : ) and never think... .
whats the importance of instinct?

You mean overrated, all the greats he beat were way past their best
@@thomaskendell8146 beat rjj easily when they were both past their best. I think prime rjj would beat him but it would be close and to say arguably the best boxer of all time in all weights might beat him shows how good he was. I remember meeting Joe's Father, Enzo Calzaghe in an amateur boxing event I was competing at during my teenage years. We were in the dressing room and we chatted for awhile giving some good advice and motivation before my fight. It stood out to me how much of a genuine and humble guy he was. Didn't even mention he was Joe's father, and I only found out later when my coach came over and asked if I realised who I was speaking to. The Calzaghe's were a great influence on Welsh/British Boxing and looking back it was really cool for Enzo to be involved with amateur boxing even at the grass roots level, undoubtedly inspiring many young athletes in the sport.
P.S: I was maybe 13/14 at the time and this was back in 2012/2013 so I struggle to recollect what exactly we spoke about. I won my bout that day, and I like to tell myself that he watched my performance and was rooting for me. Thanks Enzo for taking the time to give a pep talk to an unknown young man, he never forgot it.
Great story man that’s legitimately so cool
Fantastic!
Damn, cherished that memory dude
Thank you for the opportunity to collab on one of my favorite & more underrated boxers, Joe Calzaghe 🙏

It's great you did a breakdown on Joe, he's so underrated it's ridiculous. For me he is the greatest British boxer of all time. He seems to have been mostly forgotten, especially his record. Entertaining, incredibly skillful, and tough. Others may disagree, but to me he was a true great. Thanks for bringing attention to an overlooked great. Edit
Calzaghe wasn't "protected". He believed, correctly, that as a champion his challengers should come to him. Why should European champions fight Americans in America in front of American crowds? Europeans have a right to fight in front of their own people
He’s forgotten because he’s not African American.
@@Re-Todd_Howard he’s mostly forgotten by the english because he’s welsh. wales, scotland and northern england are treated with much else importance.
Well said.. Joe a true legend!

@@user-ec7jl4fg1p I agree, I'm Irish and it does seem that recognition is hard to get in Britain if you aren't English, or they will try to claim you as English. Was great to watch Joe's career
Calzaghe didn't have insane power, blistering speed, an iron chin, or any phsyical quality to his game that was better than any fighter of his day... The one thing he did have however, was the best engine I've ever seen in boxing and a work ethic without equal. He could have gone 20 rounds every fight easily. His father coached him to perfection and the 46-0 record says all it needs to. He is one of the greatest to EVER do it, far and away the greatest British fighter of all time, and my favorite ever boxer.
Lol what
Looks pretty fast to me.
I think one of the fastest I’ve seen tbh
But, what do I know.
He was very fast.
32 knock outs for not having "insane power" he had fast hands and pretty good foot work to boot.
@youmad498 Haha that's a welsh dragon, his Dad is a tiny fair skinned man and Joe was pretty big, I mean he was light heavyweight champ amongst other things. The bit I didn't mention is Joe's mother is very much Welsh.
Is Mayweather here?. 😂
One of my favourite boxers, his work rate was insane and his career is underrated. His war with Kessler and his schooling of Lacy were outstanding.
Yeah he gave Lacy a boxing lesson, it was great
And his demolition of Roy J Jr (yes I know Jr was almost washed up by this time) but he put on a masterclass on Roy that, at the time, had never before been achieved.

Thanks for this amazing breakdown. My Dad is from Wales and when i started to get into boxing my Dad would show Joe Calzaghe's matches to me, good times.
When you see Calzaghe in slow motion you can really appreciate the variation in his rhythm and punching angles
Emanuel Augustus was the same way. There was a song playing in his head that he danced to when he went into drunken boxer mode. The angles, broken timing, outrageous movement threw the opponent off and made great set ups
Yeah his rhythm was insane, but his volume was not the same as joe
Omg, I had no idea he was a music based fighter. Having a music background myself, I try to teach my boxers to see the overlap between fighting and rhythm/music/dancing/art. Thanks for making this
It's pretty amazing how little rhythm is talked about. Especially because in my opining timing is the single most important aspect of martial arts or any combat sports.
@@TheModernMartialArtist Maybe they should play music during the actual fight, like figure skating.

As a musician who has training in jazz the second you said his father was a jazz musician who saw a musical rhythm to boxing, I was like oh snap because I understood exactly how a jazz musician could see the beauty of teaching his son to box with jazz music. The beauty of jazz is that it constantly changes time signatures and where the song is going. Most boxers would be what you might call a pop song in the sense that if you know a lot about the pop genre you can kind of guess where a song is going the first time you hear it. There is a predictable nature to it and that is why it's called pop because the goal of the composer is to exploit what the listener expects to hear.
Jazz is different however. The goal of jazz is to create something cohesive but also not predictable. That's why it's a musician's genre.
Im just saying I can definitely see how jazz can be such a powerful training tool because you could theoretically find a particular jazz song that exploits every fighters weaknesses.
Interesting
Interesting yeah
One of my favorites. People never talk about the fact that he retired undefeated. Thanks for making the video.
Joe Calzaghe was quite terrifying…
He looked so real, like someone you see everyday.
He never stops, and he would do it at such a level that was too much to handle at long periods of time.
This dude is the showcase as to why I'd never fight a drummer hahaha
They love to get into a zone where the body hits as fast as possible all at distinct strength and precision.

The fact that his dad , a Jazz Musician , train him and like 2 or 3 other world champs is a testament to that man. What a dad
I got really bored with boxing, I felt it got really stale.
However Joe Calzaghe kept my interest.
Cymru am byth 🏴🏴
As a fellow Jazz musician to the old man. You couldn’t have said it better brother. Keep up the killin content 🎷
Calzaghie is so underrated, especially by America. He was like the Flash with that handspeed. People call him a pillow puncher but he's like Mayweather, his hands were so broken he went from, as you say, a knockout fighter to a chess and speed master of the ring.
He was defending a minor belt for decade of his prime so I think he’s rated fairly. Later on he fought some good, not great fighters and some great, but way past prime fighters. So I’d say he’s rated fairly.
The first Calzaghe fight I saw he broke one of his hands near the start and won it with jabs from his good hand and faints with his broken hand. And that was a title fight as far as I remember. This guy was on a different level.
I think that was against Evans ashira
fighting a cab driver
The Diaz Brothers incorporated a similar slappy, unpredictable and almost sloppy approach to volume punching. Also Southpaws. I see a lot of similarities.
Joe was so much less sloppy and so much more skilled, at boxing, than both of the brothers Diaz.
@croppinthechoches9396 definitely
Yeah he's just comparing the styles ,non stop pressure and combination thanks to what seems like an unlimited stamina supply
It's not the first time people have seen the similarities, Joe is obviously just a much hugher level version, he's an all time great boxer
I read somewhere that Calzaghe is Nick's favorite boxer. Makes sense if you look at their style
Very interesting how many of his punches looks like slaps. I wonder if he would be disqualified in the olympics
How is he not mentioned among the greats?? Outstanding talent and an excellent career.
He is
@@brianjackson3031 no lmao. didn't beat one p4p fighter in their prime. he will be remembered as a good fighter. not among the greats ever. Lomachenko is much more battle tested and fought more guys in their prime
Because he didn't beat anyone
@footballcoreano Jones Jr hadn't fought at the world class level for years at that point and Calzaghe showboated like he was dominating live competition and not a shot fighter
I never rated this man because off what a lot of people said, i watched all the footage of his fights and looked at some of his opponents and realised he was one of the greatest of all time, absolutely amazing boxer, best video I’ve seen on calzaghe 🤟

I was unaware of him before seeing this but this just goes to show how much of a beautiful, intuitive and creative art boxing actually is.

This sums up so many of the things I love the most about fighting- music and self expression, truly wonderful video. Would love to see you do a breakdown of Roy Jones Jr as well as he was also extremely inventive with his rhythm breaks and timing. Thanks again for another great video!
Anyone with a love of boxing knows how good Joe was
Why did he need the judges to give him the fight against 45 year old Bernard Hopkins?
@footballcoreano
Who did he beat? Need more info.
@@maxshepherd4855 Hopkins was a phenominal fighter even at 45, he went on to win a world title after Calzaghe retired, using his points win against Hopkins as some sort of deminishing statement of one of Joes end of career fights makes you look salty. If Joe was American youd all be calling him the best ever.
@@pelvist it wasn't even a win, judges scored Joe's missed slaps as scoring punches. If Joe wanted recognition he should have fought better comp in his prime instead of doing fuck all then fighting two old men for paydays before retiring. Dude struggled against any halfway decent comp he fought (Reid, Kessler, Hopkins) and only looked good against shot old men and cab drivers.
@@Uuyrijies1123 Jeff Lacy is the best boxer he fought at his prime. Anyone who believes he'd beat Roy Jones before Jones moved to heavyweight doesn't have an opinion worth respecting. He had changes to fight both Jones and Hopkins YEARS before he did and chose not to.
Calzaghe is one of my all time favorite fighters. This video is a Christmas gift all on its own for me!
Calzaghe was coached by his dad from the start before his amateur career. He only got a different coach at the start of his career due to pressure from promoters however he went back to his dad quickly because he felt traditional coaches were trying to iron out his uniqueness.
I think that’s a huge part of his success - his unorthodox approach
Love this video on my favorite modern-era boxer. Joe was something else, thanks for making this.

Man I've been waiting for calzaghe. The way u worded this fits him to te T. Great work
very synchronous you post this. just last night I was laying in bed unable to sleep and a name kept coming up in my brain: Jeff Lacy. for a half hour I just kept thinking Jeff Lacy... who the hell was Jeff Lacy? didn't remember if he was an actor or musician or politician or whatever... then finally realized he was the guy that went over to the UK and got obliterated by Calzaghe.
Yeah who was Lacy? An American hype job bum
Calzaghe had a unique, almost weird style. His hooks looked like slaps but he always kept his elbows tucked. He had very good footwork and a ridiculous volume. His head movement was elite. Not a power puncher but he had good pop in his fists. One of a kind boxer.
dude is fluid… some of his head movements and jabs look like Ali if i’m honest. very fluttery an evasive yet rapid strikes.
Calzaghe was a savage. His style was mesmerizing. Not everyone expected his style to transition to world elite level but it did. Sheer volume and swagger and the heart of a lion when needed. He defeated the best of his era. The fight with the very dangerous Mikkel Kessler lives long in the memory. Calzaghe and Lewis are the two greatest to come from the UK.
Calzaghe vs Kessler was one of the best boxing matches you will ever see.
Tremendous fighter and one of the best I've seen. Some of his greatest achievements came towards the end of his career when he went to America. The fight with Hopkins was close, and some said that he was fighting a 43 year old and so what. Hopkins next fight saw him outclass Kelly Pavlik, who was unbeaten at the time, a World Champion and around 17 years younger.
Says it all really.
A 43 year old B-Hop was still pretty frustrating to combat. The best "old" fighters lose their physicality and have to rely on more "tricks" to succeed. After Calzaghe he UDs Pavlik and Jones, and then fights for 6 more years. That's impressive. Was he "dangerous"? He KO'd De La Hoya in '04. Four years later I'm not sure Joe was worried much about getting KOd. Still, Calzaghe beats him with a split, even after a 1st round downing. Face/nose was busted up, if I remember. Endurance wins in the end, I think.
Agreed bro, and joe was at the end of his career aswell.
He lost to Hopkins
@@seanmurphy2365 If you are delusional, sure.
He out punched Hopkins in all 12 rounds. And he out punched Hopkins across the fight by 232 to 127 total punches, and 187 to 116 power punches.
The racist was beaten with ease, it was just also ugly and not fun to watch because Hopkins was a coward who tried everything he could to ruin the fight with dirty tactics.
@@wyterabitt2149 the compubox system is a complete joke and you've lost all credibility by quoting it unironically.
1. It's not actually "compu" it's an error prone game of humans pressing buttons in real time and every ineffective flurry of slaps calzaghe threw, regardless of what landed, was not only cheered by the audience of d riders but counted as punches by the mentally deficient judges and "compubox" as well.
2. The definition of power punches vs jabs defies all logic. Any punch other than a jab is considered a "power punch". According to compubox, a jab from Larry Holmes isn't a power punch but a rear handed slap from calzaghe is. That's not how boxing works. Calzaghe liked to rush forward and throw movements with his hands that can't even be described as punches, Hopkins would counter with one or two pinpoint shots and the sound of the biased crowd along with the low iq of the judges and viewers was enough to fool said judges and viewers.
Anyone watching who isn't braindead and/or emotionally compromised would be able to see Hopkins counter punching his way to a victory and calzaghe slapping his way to a gift decision. The fact that you mentioned him being a racist proves you're emotionally compromised and can't be taken seriously. I don't like his racism either and never liked him in general but I have the masculine trait of not allowing my emotions to cloud your judgement and apparently you don't.

Oh my fucking God!!! I am a southpaw and I've been using a lot of those elements give or take and have never heard of anybody else doing so. I've also gotten complaints by some boxing instructors about me doing this. For the record I am an amateur Muay Thai Fighter and MMA fighter with a background of karate and Taekwondo. I've always had a personal belief that sometimes winning a fight is making your opponent is uncomfortable as possible. So I would throw Jabs at different speeds or throw Jab then lead uppercut and then lead hook. I'm also a southpaw. I can go on and on about this but some of his techniques can also be applied to MMA.
Such an underrated boxer.
Overrated
I think I suggested Joe a while back, glad to see his fighting is getting some attention.
Joe was such an amazing fighter but was so avoided by everyone. The likes of Reid, brewer, Woodhall and byron Mitchell were all recently world champions before fighting Joe but refused to fight him in unification fights. Ottke avoided him like the plague. Frank Warren asked Hopkins when he was at middleweight how much he wanted to come to the UK and fight Joe at super middle. He said £5 million. Frank sent him a contract and Hopkins changed his demand to £10 million! People say Joe caught Hopkins and Jones when they were too old but I still think you have to give Joe credit as they could have fought him when they were younger and but dodged it.

And as for Joe Calzaghe, he stands easily among my shortlist of favourite Boxers of all time.
Joe was a real problem for everyone , never took an L either. Though imo he did have a very well calculated career to minimize risks
His career wasn't really his fault. The other main world champion in his division for the majority of his career, Sven Ottke, outright refused to fight him (if you want to talk carefully managed careers, Sven's your guy), while Jones Jr and Hopkins kept declining on 'commercial grounds' until they were on the way out and reluctantly took the payday. In a lot of ways, Calzaghe was too talented for his own good. Nobody wanted any part of him (apart from Kessler - full credit to him - and Lacy, whose management grossly underestimated the situation)

An absolutely phenomenal fighter. Massive talent, massive skill, super tough and always exciting.
It is utterly remarkable that Calzaghe sucessfully changed his entire style from KO puncher to volume-punching cardio machine.
When his hands went bad, Calzaghe found another way to get the job done and remain at the highest level of the sport.
That's a true Champion to be able to do that. He built up his cardio to a level that nobody could match.
Pacquiao is the only other guy with Calzaghe's level of cardio.
Good on you reporting that and educating the people, Modern Martial Artist;
the majority of people crack the tired "Cal-slappy" line, totally ignorant of the fact that Calzaghe used to be a KO puncher before his hands went bad.
KO puncher? He has two kos out of 32 stoppages. The rest are tkos
i always liked calzaghe and imo he would have beaten froch easily lol
Rhythm is SOOOO important and am very glad you're getting around to one of the best
I feel like it's not just his cardio but a dance like rhythm and flow leading to more efficient movement and consistent breathing
That’s an art in itself.
You are so right with this observation
If Joe was American he'd be talked about so much more. My favourite boxer of all time. People say he slaps, well he'd slap you to hospital. Unrelenting volume, cardio for days and so fucking entertaining. Never controversial. True champion tackle.
If Joe fought the other top fighters in his weight class in his prime he would be talked about so much more. The dude sat in his backyard and fought cab drivers for his whole career, it's no ones fault but his own.
Harry Grebs style was like Calzaghe with a high output and amazed stamina. He would overwhelm his opponent with fast combinations and was known for his toughness sometimes using dirty tactics.
Greb was arguably the GOAT and can't be compared to a bum like Calzaghe

Amazing how good he was despite a defective punching motion. He slaps rather than turning his hands over but it didn't appear to matter. I suppose all the positives more than made up for it. The talk about timing makes me think that boxers should learn the drums and literally jab with different time signatures every round or minute of a round.

Calzaghe Vs Lacy was one of the best fights ever. Lacy came over from America, hyped up as this monster who would finally destroy Joe. Looking at them side by side you wouldn't give Joe a chance, and as the match started it looked ominous, but gradually......just watch it, it's amazing.
Certainly did , they hyped Lacey up to be the mini Mike Tyson he had a face like a butcher's block at the end of the fight. Remember it like it was yesterday thought that night fuck sake Joe you've got yr hands full, amazing fighter 🤙
I thikn Calzaghe v Lacey was Calzaghes best performance, he put on a masterclass in that fight, really shoed there are levels to the game.
It was one of Joe's best performances, yes, but hardly a great fight. It was much too one sided to be considered one of the best .
That last line about leading the dance if you're setting the music was chef's kiss great scriptwriting, buddy.
Watching him use the standard jab-cross-hook, but do it in like, nine different rhythms is fascinating
I m waitin for this video from years!
What a Christmas gift!
Thanks so much!
Best boxer to come out of the UK along with Lennox Lewis
No he wasn’t - plenty genuinely better than “ sick note”.
He was no where close to the level of Lennox
I never missed a calzaghe fight from his mid career to final bout and man i was always so impressed by his cardio, speed and work rate. It annoys me he never got the recognition he deserved. A super cool down to earth guy aswell. Top man! 💪👍
He is a class act, kessler and cal was the last two true gentlemen in boxing.
I always admired Calzaghe. That out put really baffled everybody. I always thought if oppents went to the body and circled with him that would give them the best chance however nobody ever did it because he was truly overwhelming
saw his fight vs roy jones and he was just lighting him up, i could not believe it. nobody does that to roy jones. except maybe tyson himself
I agree, although RJJ was shot when that fight happened.
@@celticraider24 LOL when he did the tyson fight he ended up looking bad, he looked like he had barely trained with yankello, he looked his age. but tyson still is a pitbull and springy as ever for the 2 rds that they agreed to
I’ll second this was a very faded hones there fir the money. Didn’t he drop cakzaghe despite ? Prime RJJ? Very different outcome surely though would have been entertaining!
@@serenityinside1 calzaghe dropped to one knee for a few seconds and then he started actually winning the fight iirc. he kicked into overdrive after beating the count. he was never really on the floor though he dropped to one knee
