As a Chinese I know we are still pretty far from our own full-chain chip manufacturing, but I am confident it can be realized one day. I am a physics grad student, and I saw many people in my cohort changed their career route to help build up the chip industry, since the sanctions started several years ago. One example might be my classmate who gave up CalTech PhD offer in particle physics, but went to chip design related PhD in Chinese Academy of Science. In our words, we don’t want to be stuck at our neck.(卡脖子) It is not uncommon that well educated people in my country values their contribution to our country more than personal interest.

I don't believe it is for national defence security, for one minute.
The give-away is that military weapons does not require high-end chips that are below 14 nm IC chips.
It is only consumer mobile phones that require high-end chips.
The second give-away is that after the initial ban on the EUV machines, 3 months later, even DUV machines are also banned. DUV is only for making lower-end chips. So, it is obvious trying to suffocate Chinese business from making chips for EV vehicles, air-conditioners, and other white goods that are used in homes.
The objectives are obviously to curb the economy development of China. So, unless national security includes keeping competitors down from growing economy, then it makes sense.

The topic is can China develop its chip industry and it is barely touched upon. Instead we have various westerners talking about the why and wherefores of US and western policies. For goodness sake, get an industry insider's take on whether China can do it. Necessity is the mother of invention and certainly that is a consideration. Just as China's rise is unstoppable, China's chip development will be unstoppable.

    • @RosscoAW
      @RosscoAW Рік тому +57

There's no point. China already has it's own domestic chip industry, it's just not manufacturing the same things or at the same scale as Taiwan is specific 7nm and smaller chips that typify products consumed by Westerners. There's plenty of domestic applications China's domestic chip industry is already perfectly capable of satisfying; it's parity with the US-owned, TSMC-dominated 7nm and smaller categories of semis that is being used as a stick to beat China. It seems simply inevitable that China will develop comparable and probably more advanced manufacturing capabilities come the end of this current semi R&D cycle (a la the building out of factories and scaling of end-production supply chains). Taiwan won't be the leading edge forever, now that everybody's made it abundantly clear that China has every reason to obviate that strategic concern as soon as possible. America will simply be forced to accept being sidelined, eventually, as it will in every other arena; the world is multipolar now, already, whether or not American arrogance allows America to act accordingly early enough (for their own sake) or not. The rest of the world, meanwhile, will be all the better for America's decadence and failure -- it has proved itself to be an irresponsible global hegemon, and a purveyor of global terror for no greater a purpose than the maintenance of America's own socioeconomic-ethnic hierarchy. America has abused and used all of it's moral credit, already; the future of humanity post 2050 is already being written, in Mandarin.
PS: It's debatable that there is already the technical capacity to produce Chinese domestic alternatives to a 7nm architecture (potentially at the 14nm scale they already produce domestically in preexisting Chinese fabs), the only caveat being they can't yet produce these new designs at a scale comparable to TSMC (ie feeding a global market). China literally just needs a decade (or two, tops) to fully capex into and build out every viable strategic and tactical industry they care to sequester away from foreign alternatives, given their economic capacity and global dependency on China ensures that China can unilaterally dominate any sector it wants that isn't already currently strategically dominated by the US. And, in that sense, of the few dozen high-tech industries that stand to be dominated by state-held verticals, China already dominates *most* of those high-technologies: 7nm and smaller semiconductor manufacturing at a global scale is just one of the *few* that is still owned by American shareholders and not the Chinese state/companies. The question really is whether or not China wants to continue to weather the storm and see if they can win out, diplomatically and politically, by using the situation (America ganging up on China's economic and high-tech development) to win brownie points with the global south, so as to reorient global rules based international organizations more toward China's multipolar goals, or if China views the strategic economic threat from America as sufficient to actually aggressively invest in and on-shore a comparable-to-7nm-global-industry over the next decade. They'll probably just do both, and win-win, as they always do.
TL;DR: America is only thinking about the next 5-10 years, tops, and arguably only the next ~2 (mid-term and presidential election intervals). China, in response, is shrugging and issuing a bunch of press statements blaming America for being arrogant, while continuing their predetermined (partially secret) plans for the next 5-, 10-, 20-, and 27- year intervals, unconcerned. America is incapable of planning and strategizing on a scale that can account for and counter Chinese plans, so it's kind of pointless to consider. China will simply pivot and continue to salami slice in the interim, while using every available opportunity to virtue signal against America's imperial decadence in a way that scores it win after win after win from the global south states that have historically been exploited, discarded, ignored, and patronized down to by the West.

As a Chinese, from another perspective, I would appreciate the technology blockade implemented by Western countries, as it would benefit the technological development of local technology companies rather than relying on Western technology as before. Throughout the history of socialist China, since 1949, we have never lacked suppression and sanctions from various aspects of the West. To be honest, China's decades of development have been accompanied by the history of Western sanctions, from military embargoes, economic sanctions, technological blockades, space legislation to human rights accusations. Is there any unused means by the West to suppress China? But throughout history and reality, has China surrendered? Obviously not, we now have enough technology, talent, funding, and long-term planning to solve all the problems we encounter. Ultimately, these issues are all related to self-reliance and hard work. This will only delay China's rise and cannot completely curb its development. Do you want to know why? Because in the long run, the Chinese nation will always be one of the smartest and most hardworking nations in the world

I reside in a little village at the foot of mountains in Nepal. My 78-year-old grandmother recalls that when she was younger, Chinese people, particularly those from the region near Tibet, would trek across the mountain range to our village in search of crops and to beg for food. Border barriers were not in place at the time.
The world's second-most powerful country right now is China. Their achievements over the last 30 years are unmatched by human thoughts.
For my grandmother, I purchased a basic phone. A full-featured phone that she has used for two years and is still in perfect working condition was a Chinese keypad phone that was available in the Nepalese market for $10.
This demonstrates their level of commitment and the scale of the work they are capable of doing. Given their extraordinary abilities to create phones that can be sold for $10 after all taxes, fees, and profit.(A phone has hundreds of internal parts)
They are, in my opinion, incredibly committed to developing and utterly unimaginable in terms of what they are capable of. China will probably surpass all other nations combined in 20 years.

No country has its own end-to-end chip manufacturing capability. The key bottlenecks are Lithography machines (Holland) and Imaging (Japan). If china can even create a mid one over the next 10 years that would be an incredible achievement. It would also spell the end of Western hegemony. As someone who wants economic stability and peace I'd rather countries collaborate instead. Because this is going to end disastrously one way or another. Healthy competition is always good. The title of this episode is "can china develop its own chip industry?" And the context doesn't say anything about it. Looking at the history, China did manage advancing a number of industries, AI, space program, navigation, deep sea, green energies, under various restrictions. So I think it is like what ASML CEO Peter Winnek predicted, it is a matter of time. These ASML machines are complex MAN-MADE machines, not God made. It is all about engineering, physics and high financial barriers. China produces the largest number of engineers and physicists nowadays, and it has the financial means too. It will probably take them anywhere from 8 to 15 years, but once they are there the game is over. Just like the GPS system, once a technology choking point for China, and after they developed its own, not only Beidou is dominant domestically, but steadily taking GPS' market share outside China.

When talking about China's chip industry, you don't have Chinese invited. Instead, all guests from western countries, discussing security and defending de-risking policy. Interesting.
When US was the only big guy in the world, they said free trade is the only right thing. When there's new player in the room, they say new rules are required by the changing world. Well, as I say, the largest changing in the world is decreasing of G7 and rising of G20. Why G7 countries would still think they have the right to make "new rules"? That's the major reason for the tension situation nowadays: selfishly blindness.

The chips that China can now manufacture are 14 nanometers, while the controllable chip industry chain in China is 28 nanometers. It was unimaginable before being sanctioned by the United States, after all, this is a global division of labor industry chain.
If you are familiar with the field of storage chips, you will find that in the past two years, major manufacturers have experienced inexplicable fires or production cuts, and prices have also become cheaper. One reason is that China's NAND and DRAM have gradually moved from backwardness to advancement. If you dare to reduce production, I will increase market share. So now nand and dram are getting cheaper and cheaper.
After years of sanctions and global Chip shortage, a large number of chips that do not need top manufacturing have been turned to domestic production. After all, apart from smartphones and computers, most electrical appliances or the automotive industry do not require first-class manufacturing to save electricity or have such high performance.
After being sanctioned, China subsidized 1000 semiconductor companies, some of which may have cheated on subsidies and some may lack competitiveness. However, as it seems now, ultimately surviving five fiercely competitive companies is sufficient. This task has been completed well, and many companies are much stronger than expected.

No Chinese or Asian perspectives on this panel? Ridiculous. You have no credibility here Al Jazeera. Very disappointing. Thumbs down.

Revising: Halting Chinese chip development could constrain the chip market's size, thereby impeding overall chip industry growth. It only has a lose-lose outcome.

China already has its full-chain chip manufacturing, though not so advanced like 5nm or 7nm. But eventually, China will have it, just as they built their space station.

I am sure the presenter is a very nice and fair guy. But I really do not understand why a Qatari state funded chanel employs a Westerner to present a geopolitical subject. The West already has phenomenal , unrivalled media resources, does it need the help of Qatar ? Or is Qatar telling the world that it's is West oriented ? Can a Western presenter present a neutral and fair view ?

One of the consequences of U.S. sanctions is the patents of banned products automatically expire since they will no longer be protected in China due to the sanction. China will then be free to use the patents and develop its own version of products.

This question was answered some time ago. Nothing is more dynamic than China's research into microelectronics and semiconductors. The Chinese are already well ahead of the rest of the world in several areas.
