Want to publicly acknowledge how professional Austin and Rich were in the crux of a high pressure shake down session. It's very special that Lucore Auto would be there and put this documentary together, and I cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm, help trackside, and thoughtfulness. The plan was to take the pace up in stages of 3 segments, both in speed and in rpm, to try to replicate a variety of ranges, temperatures, and passing/shifting/braking conditions. Just about all the rotating parts - including wheels and tires and clutch - were rebuilt or new. So there was much to assess in addition to engine power. And - YES! - it is freaking AWESOME to wheel this beast. Much more in store for next year's vintage/historic racing season.

You are so right, unfortunately it's a tale MOST people not in/from the European market have any idea about. They also never made it to our shores as race cars, pretty much the only ones we've ever seen here in The States are street cars modified to be race cars and VERY rarely with a Cosworth GAA motor. Lots and lots of incredible little race cars and history we missed out on!

@@LucoreAuto Here in Australia we did actually get to see a lot of these different vehicles race here as well as out home grown touring cars.
My brother is currently building up a Holden Torana LX SS Hatchback, if you want to look them up, which are worth big dollars these days, like a lot of your cars from this era.
I miss the days of various types/styles of cars that all had different strengths/weaknesses and have now been replaced by generic, jelly mould vehicles that are basically the same except for the cosmetics.

@@LucoreAuto Superb video- as a British Capri fan and owner, this is compulsive viewing. I know somebody you would find *very* interesting to talk to about the GAA. Google 'Ric Wood Motorsport.' Ric is based in Stockport, Manchester, he can build GAA engines. He built a replica RS3100 a few years ago to original Ford racing spec. The build took him 18 months from start to finish. I saw him race at Oulton Park Gold Cup. I know him to chat to, he's worked on my turbo charged Cologne 3.0 V6 (Bored and stroked to 3000cc), he set the fuelling up on it some years ago. When I spoke to him in the OP pits, he told me that he had improved the performance of the cylinder heads with his CNC kit (He's a specialist in modifying cylinder heads) as a result, his RS3100 GAA engine was pushing out a whipping 528 Bhp! Get in touch with him you'd find him a very interesting bloke to chat with. He's a damn good racer too and all round good bloke. :)

Wow. even here in Europe, the Cosworth GAA 3.4 is something really really special. Getting 400-450 hp from 3.4 liters in 70's technology is something really special... I was born in 74' and that was the year Cosworth gifted us this gem of an engine. It topped out at 460hp NA. Till this day this is the engine that everybody wanted when I was a kid. We dreamed about first and second generation Escorts with this engine.... But it was eye watering expensive even then, costing often 3 times what we paid for clean Escort mk1's and mk2's in the late 80's....
God bless and lots of love from Norway.

Oh how I loved the ITV rally cross series that the owner mentioned. Televised on Saturday "World of sport" it was very competitive, I can't remember how many laps, but very entertaining. Usually Ford Capris and Escorts with Burton engines (I think) lots of Minis and the odd Porsche and BMW if I remember correctly.
I'm almost certain Ford had a 4 wheel drive Capri in the series.
Flat out racing at its best.
The last track Capri I saw, was at Sears point (Infinion race track) in California a few years ago.
Absolutely love the Capri featured in this video, really nice preparation.
I wish the owner good health to enjoy a car rarely see these days.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce a good long video with just engine sounds, Not drowned out with guitar tracks.

Living in France, and knowing and liking the Capri, your video made my day! Thank you for that moment. This Capri is gorgeous, a true monster with a beautiful blue shape. It runs and sounds perfectly and sharing some laps with us gave me the impression to be beside the pilot.
And you friend is a true specialist and knows very well the race story of this car, he's very passionating and it's a pleasure to listen to what he says!
For sure, you won't build the same Capri, but you'll build another one with its own engine and its own 'personality'!

It's funny how that works, same can be said for muscle cars in the states. Through the 80s none of them were really worth much and you saw them driven/raced everywhere.
What's interesting for us is these things just never grabbed much attention here, especially like they did across the Pond. But those who know what they are... they are all big fans 😀

If the sound of this at full chat doesn't get your blood flowing even if you don't care for six cylinders, there's something wrong with you. Amazing build, car, history of not just the original engine but the car itself and how Norm got the Cosworth engine for it. It was absolutely the right decision for them to not cut up the original bodywork and put on the Group 4 parts. As for the history of the car, am I right in that this one is the Trans Am Capri originally driven by Sam Posey and I forget who the owner was in 1973?
As for the ultimate Capri there's always the one-up Group 5 ground effect Zakspeed Turbo :) I wonder where the IMSA GTX Mustangs are today, because those were the Zakspeed car with different bodywork.
Also that 2002 looked pretty nice.

    • @MrCaprinut
      @MrCaprinut 3 роки тому +3

I own both the Zakspeed Gr5 and Mustang IMSA GTX models in my collection together with other Capri models :-)
Have wondered about the same regarding the GTX.
I have also been 3 times to Speyer in Germany which holds the biggest Capri meeting in the world.
There used to be Gr5 Zakspeed there (running in Gr6 - the longest continued raced Capri), but it was sold before the last time I was there so it was not on display.
And they also have a GAA Cosworth Capri there which is fired up and raced on the parking lot. The sound level of that car is insane.

Utterly glorious looking and sounding car! That colour scheme sits beautifully on that swooping bodywork.
Sound wise it reminds of a Jag racing car from the 60s... just beautiful.

    • @LucoreAuto

The moment I walked up this car and saw it for the first time, dressed in that paint scheme... with those flares and hips 😍 It almost can't take a bad photo. Truly stunning car.
Those sounds aren't something honestly most Americans have heard before given none of this type of racer really made it to our shores. We saw some of it on TV if we wanted European racing but that was it, and they never prowler the streets here which is a shame.
When Norm opened this thing up in the final session for the last time and I could hear it from the complete opposite side of the track.... such an incredible song.

fitted a set of weslake heads on my brothers old 3ltr granada in the eighties, along with a camshaft change + a swap to manual box. that thing flew, obliterated the hot hatches of the day, and still got 29 mpg on a run. we ran separate exhausts, so it sounded like a 6R4 rally car when we took it on rally stages.
sadly his commute changed to 140 miles a day, so it was part-exed for newer model, quieter + more comfortable, so those heads were lost. never knew they were so rare, oh bugger....

It's a real race car this thing. It doesn't tolerate being nursed in any way.
How it all comes together over 6500 is fantastic. It's like it's out of focus then all of a sudden it becomes focused.
It seems the engine, injection system and of course the car are well matched. It comes alive!
Of course I don't know but I feel the part throttle misfire on this was due to the injection system being constant and untimed, it cant really meter the fuel perfectly under all conditions. Crude for a street car but ideal for a race car as the end session shows. Wow!

You are spot on Sir, it didn't like going for a cruise and you can certainly hear that in the first few videos of it in track. She's built for running, not parade laps with the show cars!
Once Norm got to the comfort point of putting his boot down and really opening it up, she really came alive. And even then he still didn't push her all the way! Even on the best lap he turned he shifted before 8,000rpm... leaving more on the table. But there's some brain training and butterflies to overcome letting your incredibly rare and expensive brand new motor rev to 8,600rpm!

The one that I was lucky enough to work on was taken to 10.5k rpm, peak power was just shy of 9k.
I assume you have a 6mm port pump?
That bottom end richness just needs a slight change in snale cam profile at light throttle opening. 1/64th off the first 20 deg off idle with a file will be enough. Assuming it's not to rich under full load, in which case set the fueling up at peak demand, if your pump cam is correct for the motor, that excess fuel down at 4k rpm will be gone and the motor will last a lot longer. Car looks great thanks for the upload👍

Awesome car! Love it. This is the man that advised you to put in a 4cylinder engine in your project car yet he's running a beautiful 3.4 liter V6 in his project. Why? I know he said because the category for racing would be much easier to compete in but come on no one wants to be asked "Hey is this the 2.6 or 2.8 V^ or the 302 V8?" Etc Then have to answer "No it's a 2 liter 4 cylinder because we didn't want it to have too much power". LOL. That would SUCK! So think about that guys.. As well the driving fun level just NEEDS to be a big HP engine. IMHO.

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  3 роки тому

Lol yes he's one and the same, this IS the Pinnacle for Capri Race cars and we honestly have no idea what class he'll actually be in. No idea if he'll even be competitive, but this car just NEEDED to be built this way.
You are correct in the 4cyl being the way he advised us to race because it will be a much more competitive/fun and less expensive class. Norm actually races a 2.0 4cyl Capri as well so he practices what he preaches 😉 Don't you worry though the 2.8 V6 option is still getting built!

The Italian tune up cracked me up. My Dad had a 67 Corvette with a seriously worked 327 that we'd have to do that to to clean out. Nothing like cruising with smoke belching out like a steam engine at 7500 RPM with popping and farting and then when it cleaned out was like being shot out of a steam catapult. LOL
