Ferreting in the Yorkshire Dales part 1

- Torchie - his name refers to his love of lamping with his lurchers in days gone by - planned to use his sidekick Dan in a manner as unfamiliar to me as a day on the Dales. Unique in stature and definitely not in vogue by today's standards, Dan is function over fashion - a reverse collie-greyhound lurcher made up of three-quarters collie and a quarter greyhound. He is not the most athletic but was created to work among the sheep and rocks of the Dales, where speed isn't everything but honesty, attentiveness and the ability to take a knock are.
The day was to be a simple affair. From the moment Dan left the farmer's red Land Rover he raked about the grassland, found and marked a warren. Torchie then slipped in a ferret or two and we let Dan course, catch and retrieve the rabbits. Normally, nets would be laid to prevent any escapees but we wanted to return to the cornerstone of what ferreting should be about: like-minded souls enjoying each other's company, taking in the breathtaking scenery and producing good working animals while harvesting a stack of rabbits for the butcher.

I had a lurcher similar to Dan. Cracking dog who could work all day long and was loyal to a fault. Fast enough for what I needed and could also work on rats or moving cows whatever I asked of him. Great video and quality old time work

After 6 years of watching this I finally realise where you are. We deliver game birds there. I knew that I recognised the landscape.
That´s a good dog! Perfectly trained and good natured.
As soon as I see a ferret I think "saddle of rabbit".
what a good dog! great video and brill that the rabbits don't go to waste!
Absolute Cracker of a dog, well done Sir you are a Champion all the very best to you and take care out there but most of all enjoy yourself while doing the things you love the most….Ferreting.
I am from Pakistan I like you and your work
Great video and steady lurch , its nice to sit back and just watch the dog work a warren listening to the rabbits below ground and waiting for a bolt. The rabbits on the dales look so easy to catch but if you catch to many then god help you carrying them back.
What a great video ! Men like "Torchie" are becoming a rare breed and it is great to have a pictorial record of a true countryman. Well done Simon some cracking video work. Cheers Nick
absolutely love the dog :D how he is bred for life in the dales and for specific jobs :)
speaks the truth no point killing if there going to go to waste , cracking video
Such a nice man, I Hope I am like that at his age, one man one dog and his ferret 😁😁
Lovely ace to work. Long may you live sir.
I have a son out of Dan he’s also called Dan he’s a great dog like his Sire, my type of dog
What a cracking dog! Collies have so much intelligence and loyalty to humans it's almost unnatural. That seems easy Rabbit stews for a week there. Good video editing too keep the videos coming.

Love watching a good dog work. Here in Canada, Ontario, the use of ferrets is strictly forbidden. My wife's grandparents are from Skipton and Cononley. Do you do any ferreting in that area? Would it be possible to join in on one of these excursions on our next trip? Looks like a fantastic way to spend a day.
I do a bit of hunting up a round Skipton
A Yorkshire man. I hope you’ve been to see gods county and if you haven’t that you get to soon. You’re welcome any time.
Yes my friend, Yorkshire is one of the places these kind of things are still thriving. I often go ratting, lamping, ferreting etc. I’m a terrier man and have ferrets too and my best friend is into his lurchers so we have a good old time every week.
You beat me to it Dailos.
What you can see in the film is the nervous system of the rabbit shutting down after being humanely despatched. Young rabbits twitch more because they have a more sensitive system. Out of all the aspects of rabbiting commented on the most confused issue is the twitching of rabbits after being humanely and efficiently despatched or shot by a rifle, especially a head shot.
I hope this clears any confusion up Jewlz.
Very nice. ...
lovely dog & ferret, done the way it should be
good stuff :)
I live in ireland and fareating is some crack

They tangle but hemp are the best or hemp string don't tangle lads they think and stingy it take great dedication to ties these nets so rabbits don't slip through and. Get hurt in a struggle

Beware the moon boys. Stay on the road. Keep clear of the moors.

I have four kits all Jill's I want to work them but not sure if parents did any working how do I get them to work ? Any tips welcome I'm new to this :) thanks
Just keep putting them down sets they will do it through instinct but the more you take them out ferreting the better they will become
Ahhhhh Yorkshire!
Aye lad
what make is the yellow handled spade please
+Jack Dudfield I think it is a bulldog
Dan sounds like a great dog, I would add some saluki in there and see what happens ha
It would be like giving the breed a lobotomy, like putting petrol in the diesel car.
Working for thousand of years protecting sheep.
this is bad ass .. #Hunting
le chien se régale
Don’t you dare kill those living creatures😡😡
poor rabbits...
+john fistikis Eh, their lives look great in all that grass, followed by a quicker, kinder death than the makeup & drug industries would give.
Stop killing them it is like me killing your dog STOP
Luke Clark percept rabbits are dumb, in large numbers, eat high numbers of crops and are a nuisance to land.
they r torturing the rabbits bloody monsters
