The News paper pretty much told the story of what they were facing at this time. Bob went solo and blew up, even though they were just as young, their last hit was stuff like Candy Girl etc when Bob was there. So there were questions of could they step up the way he dwas doing, it was a new era. The NE Heartbreak album showed they could and did. This song is a classic even today. Check out their New Edition movie mini series.
@2:52 Boyz II Men got their group name from a song off this same album (N.E. Heartbreak) titled "Boys to Men" (a concert favorite!). They sang that song for Mike Bivins (NE member) and he was impressed enough to agree to sign them on the spot. The abbreviated version was recapped in their debut single, "Motownphilly" and the video. @3:13 - Johnny and Ralph recently sang duets together. My fav: "All Mine." @3:44 - Bobby was living in his solo world as the "King of R&B.", so it's funny watching Bobby during this song when all 6 of them are live together. 🤣😂 @6:22 - Ralph is the original lead singer. Used to switch off with Bobby. He refused to let "them" convince him to become the Michael Jackson of the group. When Bobby left, Johnny came in with the Grown Man Voice and upgraded them from bubblegum R&B to grown folks music on "Can You Stand the Rain" and "Boys to Men." They usually switch leads between verses, especially on Johnny's debut with the group. Ricky's voice gets more shine on BBD hits as the only lead singer and on NE's "Home Again" album. @7:30 - Bobby was on a lot of the hits before 1986: "Popcorn Love", "Is This the End", "Count Me Out", "Mr. Telephone Man" (lead), "Jealous Girl" (claims to have written this in his autobiography), etc.
Johnny Gill, who starts out the song, wasn’t an original member, but soon as he joined, he was automatically the best singer in the group. He already had his rep, & he represented when he stepped in after Bobby left. ‘Second guy’ is Ralph Tresvant who sang most of the leads when they were kids, like Candy Girl, & Cool it Now. These names are known in R&b. Wouldn’t hurt to check the history a little for the sake of perspective. Basically, they were kids when Bobby was in the group. He sang lead on Mr.Telephone Man, which was a pretty big hit. Very cute song & video. You don’t see Bobby cause he left to go solo & do HIS thing. First he had I Need My Girlfriend. Then he got more grown with stuff like like My Prerogative, & Every Little Step I Take. He also had movie roles, in Thin Line Between Love & Hate, & a cameo in Ghostbusters in 2. When Johnny came in & took his place, that was part establishing themselves as ‘grown’, with this song, & If It Isn’t Love. The other projects kinda all spilled out around the same time like early nineties? Ralph T. - Sensitivity; Bell, Biv, Devoe - Poison, & Do Me Baby. Johnny - My My My, & Rub You The Right Way.
Johnny Gill is the opening singer (added to the group after Bobby left) followed by Ralph Tresvant. They both have nice solo albums in their archives. The other 3 members spun off to form Bell Biv Devoe as a separate project in the early 90's but never left NE. Bobby was off doing his solo stuff at this time and there was a lot of "drama" like the group was falling apart -- you see them in the video passing around the newspaper. This was their statement that they were still going strong and that they could transition to a more adult sound after starting out as a group of kids.
One of the New Edition members with the glasses (Michael Bivens) actually discovered Boys 2 Men. The group was named after the last track on this album titled of course "Boys 2 Men".
This is after Bobby left, in fact this came out around the same time as Bobby's Dont Be Cruel. Bobby was in it for the 1st 3 albums then he came back as an adult when they all came back together in 96, ever since their lineup constantly changes. This group is not only 1 of the most successful ever based on their own success but there's a spinoff group in this group & all the solo success. This group alone will provide MANY great & memorable reactions for you based on that you have the solo songs of Bobby, Johnny Gill (who is the guy with the amazing voice on here, hes 1 of THE best male vocalists of our time & doesn't get the recognition he deserves), & Ralph Tresvant (the guy with the high voice, he's actually the closest to being a lead singer), and the other 3 members formed a spinoff group calles BellBivDeVoe. And all have HITS
Johnny Gill (the guy that started the song with his baritone voice) joined the group after Bobby Brown was kicked out. He later went on to form the group LSG with Gerald Lavert and Keith Sweat. They formed the group with the initials of their last names. The guy with the higher pitched voice, Ralph Tresvant is basically the lead singer of New Edition.
I love the symbolism of "Can you stand the rain?" Meaning can you battle the stormy weather.... in other words, when times are tough in our relationship will you be strong and stand by me!?? Very poetic way of saying there will be beautiful days and stormy ones in store for us....can I count on you!??
New Edition one of the best singing groups of all time - for any generation. Johnny Gill (deeper voice) can SANG! They all are very very talented and have longevity in crazy show biz. I have nothing but love for New Edition.
This man knows his music i am so happy I came across this channel I am young but I love old music.... people often think its weird but I have an old soul and I love it
Thanks Jack for the reaction. One of my all time favorite songs. I like that someone of your age is reacting to ol' skool R&B groups from back in the day.
Bobby sang lead on Mr. Telephone man. They started out about 12yrs. Bobby left by the time he was 16 or 17yrs old. You can do a month on New Edition, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant(guy with the high voice), Johnny Gill(the first guy) and BBD which is ricky bell(the guy with the glasses), Mike Bivens(the guy talking at the end. ) Ron Devoe (the tall one. Lol).
New Edition started with Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, and Ralph from 83 to 85 or 86. Bobby was kicked out of the group right in the middle of their promotion for their All For Love album and they stayed as a four man group for a while. Then in 87-88, Johnny Gill came in to originally replace Ralph because Ralph wanted to go solo but they convinced him to stay. So it was Ronnie, Johnny, Ricky, Mike and Ralph for the N.E. Heartbreak album. Bobby Brown was going solo while NE was moving on with Johnny, they even toured together in 88. Then around 90, they all went solo. Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, and Bell Biv DeVoe was formed. All six of them came back together for a reunion album in 96 called “Home Again”.
This was the first super group. Everyone from this group has successful solo careers. Bobby Brown had a great career, Ralph had a good solo run and has a new song with Johnny Gill, who had a fantastic solo career. Of course we can't forget Bell Biv Devoe who had the most commercial success. Can you review 'Sensitivity' by Ralph Tresvant and 'My my my' by Johnny Gill?
The, Heart Break album also contained the track "Boys to Men"....the group Boys to Men would go on and use that as the name for their group..also, Michael Bivins (the one you compared to Denzel) signed them to a recording deal back then.
Another popular New Edition song is : If it isn't love. Johnny Gill , the first singer has some great slow/upbeat tracks. Other singers in the 80s/90s with similar powerful voices were : Alexandra O Neil Fake, Criticise , Christopher Williams I'm dreamin, Sherrick Just call and Will Downing.
the low pitched guy is Johnny Gill (who replaced Bobby Brown). the high pitched guy is Ralph Tresvant (the group's lead singer). you'll find that New Edition is one of the few groups where every member had solo success at one time or another.
Bobby Brown started in the group and then he went solo after getting kicked out the group, but he comes back and forth into the group and they all tour together. Johnny Gill is the one who started this song off with the strong voice, he also has a solo career. Ralph was the falsetto, Ricky Bell had on the glasses with the runs. The are one of the greatest R&B boy bands to ever do it, and they don't get enough credit. Many groups have tried to copy their style, but no group does it better. I love going to their Concerts when they get back together and tour. They have a movie out called the New Edition Story, I think you'll enjoy it.
Boys to Men got their name from a New Edition Song called, "Boys to Men" sung by Johnny Gill. Bobby went solo and was in his "Don't be Cruel" phase at this time...
It's funny, cause the member in this group named Michael Bivens was the one who put Boyz II Men on, and managed them earlier in their career, when he was still apart of New Edition.
The greatest comparison to be made is with the Temptations, really. Each member played a role in the group that parallels a member of the Temptations. Even the replacements parallel replacement members in The Temptations!
I'm not sure if someone has told you this already, but Micheal Bivens of that group, New Edition, founded Boyz II Men and assembled the group as well as produced them I believe. The group title Boyz II Men came from the same title of a New Edition song
This album was called N.E. Heartbreak....the guys names are Johnny, Ralph, Ricky, Ronnie and Mike. If you want up beat from this album Not My Kind Of Girl or If It Isn't Love
This song and album was after Bobby left the group and was replaced with Johnny Gill. He was the one with the deep voice. He has a really good solo discography. Fun fact. One of the members of New Edition i can’t remember who, is the reason we have Boys 2 Men. He signed them and they took the name Boys 2 Men from a song by New Edition. A way to show that they were basically the new generation. Oh and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote and produced this song.
New Edition has an extensive body of work. Then 3 members had solo careers (Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill) and the remaining 3 formed another group BBD, Bel Biv DeVoe (for Ricky Bell, Michael Bivens, Ronnie DeVoe.)
The genius of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! They helped give New Edition a more adult appeal and sound. You've got to hear the New Edition song "Boys to Men" which features my favorite vocal performance by Johnny Gill. That song is what inspired the group Boyz II Men to take that name so that says a lot.
With New Edition, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill, and BBD there so many good songs to dive into. I remember everybody was skeptical about Johnny being part of the group after Bobby left but he meshed really well and that voice sealed the deal.🎶
Ralph Tresvant (2nd verse) made New Edition what it was. Love Johnny Gill too (1st verse). The other 3 made up Bel Biv Devoe, which was a huge group at the time. Bobby was in and out through the years Fun fact Boyz II Men got their name from the New Edition song called “Boys To Men”
New Edition has a song called "Boys 2 Men." I think it's hinted or maybe explained that the group took that song title and made it their group name in The New Edition Movie.

My fav: "All Mine."
@3:44 - Bobby was living in his solo world as the "King of R&B.", so it's funny watching Bobby during this song when all 6 of them are live together. 🤣😂
@6:22 - Ralph is the original lead singer.
One of the members from New Edition found Boyz || Men so you are on the right track!
New Edition- Hit me off !
Me watching Jack's reaction 4 mths later he reacted to this New Edition song🤣🤣🤣ooohhhh gooosh...New Edition's most sensual song ever dear Jack😀
One of the New Edition members with the glasses (Michael Bivens) actually discovered Boys 2 Men. The group was named after the last track on this album titled of course "Boys 2 Men".
please react to ‘Candy Rain’ by Soul for Real and ‘I Like the Way (the kissing game)’ by Hi Five🥰💞
and ‘Ready or Not’ by After 7
yes hi five!!!
Candy Rain...YES!!! I think I asked him to react to that on another one of his video comment sections.
Both amazing songs !
Someone has great taste.
OMG it's like Christmas on your channel today! I always look for your notifications.
RIcky is the one who sings the bridge. He's the group's secret weapon and his voice is the most well-preserved now.
You should definitely react to “Hit Me Off”!!! All six members are featured on that track and the video is too fun!!
Aaron Hall-i miss you
New Edition one of the best singing groups of all time - for any generation. Johnny Gill (deeper voice) can SANG! They all are very very talented and have longevity in crazy show biz. I have nothing but love for New Edition.
Johnny Gill was an excellent addition to the group. Him and Ralph killed this song!
Lol).
Classic song from an Iconic group!
Written and produced by the masters Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis. They are legendary (same guys who work with Janet)
Johnny Gill was a solo artist before joining NE. He had a hit song with Stacy Lattisaw called perfect combination...
I love that you post often!!!!!! I can binge watch to alll of your videos.
🤗 Thank you Jack, this was🔥
"Like Jodeci without the freaky" too true!
Mike Bivins - New Edition member & entrepreneur actually discovered & signed Boys II Men to his label Biv 10 aka the East Coast Family.
the low pitched guy is Johnny Gill (who replaced Bobby Brown). the high pitched guy is Ralph Tresvant (the group's lead singer). you'll find that New Edition is one of the few groups where every member had solo success at one time or another.
New Edition made the song 'Boys to Men' which was adopted by the group Boyz II Men who are produced by Mike Bivens of New Edition
Boys to Men got their name from a New Edition Song called, "Boys to Men" sung by Johnny Gill. Bobby went solo and was in his "Don't be Cruel" phase at this time...
Ralph Tresvant the second singing is the lead singer, the 1st person singing is Johnny Gill he joined after Bobby left.
Hi Jack, can you please react to Blackstreet "No Diggity", "Don't Leave" and/or "Fix"? Thank you😊
Fun fact Jack Michael Bivins (a member of New Edition) actually gave Boyz 2 Men there start and helped them get signed.
You need to do Candy Girl, Popcorn Love and Mr Telephone Man too now 😄
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis ❤
Lmao they're grooving on the tracks of the red line train yard in Dorchester I love it.
Ralph Tresvant (2nd verse) made New Edition what it was. Love Johnny Gill too (1st verse). The other 3 made up Bel Biv Devoe, which was a huge group at the time. Bobby was in and out through the years
Fun fact Boyz II Men got their name from the New Edition song called “Boys To Men”
These boys are from my neighborhood in Boston. All of them. They're still TALENTED AF.
You MUST do "My, My, My" by Johnny Gill! The deep voice brother! ❤❤
New Edition has a song called "Boys 2 Men." I think it's hinted or maybe explained that the group took that song title and made it their group name in The New Edition Movie.
