That was Johnny Gill hitting that long note, Fellas!!! This song is legendary! One of the most full bodied songs ever made. Perfectly balanced musically and vocally!!!
@@giovannijohnson5867 you can literally see Ricky singing wtf 😭 Everytime they perform it whos singing that part ? Ricky ! On the movie who was singing that part ? Ricky !
The reason the production is top notch, is because it was produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, who began as musicians with Prince, The Time and then as producers for Janet Jackson's best albums and on and on.
And... Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were taught by Leon Sylvers of the Sylvers, while working at SoLar Records. You misght remember groups such as Shalamar, The Whispers, Dynasty and many other. FYI
WTF??? My man in the Nike hat has badassed rythym and can sing too??? Whaaaaaaaat 😮😮😮😮... all of you guy's are awesome...oh sh*** all of you guy's have rythym 😮😮😮😮😮
No..Bobby was not in this song...and that is THE Johnny Gill holding those long notes in the background at the end..an he did a good majority of the ad libs❤🔥❤🔥
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are the producers of this. They are Grammy winning producers that were in Prince's created group The Time. The did a lot of Janet Jackson's material as well as a list of others. And they all have that noticeable sound.
New Edition still tours with all 6 members (including Bobby). It is a EXCELLENT Live show, personally my favorite. They all sing live (which sadly many don't do or they rely way too much on a back track for vocals) but the still do the ORIGINAL choreography (in their mid 50s) and KILL IT!! They have always had insane choreo from start to finish and they never skip a beat. If yall ever get the chance to go, goooooo!!! Just found yall, really enjoyed the reaction. I subscribed 😊
Johnny and Ralph work well together in this, BUT Ricky gets overlooked! Around 9:27 (just before they pause the song) and then especially 10:55 all the way until he hits the big note at 11:12. Giving Ricky Bell his props!
Ralph is the primary lead of NE, he sung lead on all of their songs except for 0ne. HE and Johnny share lead on this. Johnny has the more mature voice, great reaction
@@omarionmaybell5897 well yea, let me clarify my bad. That was a co-lead, NE has Plenty of those. I meant there hasn’t been a single released without his voice as either principle lead or co-lead. Even with “one more day”. He sings the line one more day and the rest of the group harmonizes on top of him. The only released single without any RT lead vocals at all is “Jealous girl”…that’s all Bobby
Bobby Brown is NOT in this as it's several years after he left the group. This was the introduction of his replacement, Johnny Gill. It's Gill sustaining those notes.
I LOVE New Edition so much from THE VERY BEGINNING of their career. I loved Bobby Brown, but Johnny Gill's voice is so deep, smooth, and soulful! Plus, I had a HUGE crush on Johnny Gill 🤦🥰
Boyz 2 Men created themselves from New Edition and their name is from another classic song from the Heart Break album, Boys To Men. New Edition is the greatest group of the last 50 years. Only The Temptations in the 1960’s might be above them of all time.
Have you ever experienced TSOP(The Sound of Philadelphia)? The Stylistics, Blue Magic, The Delfonics. Any of these groups would give the Temptations a run for their money. And I love the Temptations.
The song is about relationships but using the analogy of sunny & rainy days, basically saying...everyone can be there when everything is going good but will you be able to make it in the relationship when things aren't going good (rainy days). Hence the line.."All the days won't be perfect so baby tell me, can you stand the rain." And no Bobby wasn't in this song.
First - let me send some love from the 859 (Lexington). I love reaction videos and glad to have come across some locals. Second - check out New Edition's "You're Not My Kind of Girl" and "NE Heartbreak" for some more of their great choreography!
Love New Edition! I bought their first album with my own money in 8th grade. This song is just so good! Johnny's "Whoa" at the end and their back up!🎶♥
That's Johnny Gill doing that note...Jam and Lewis are geniuses..Bobby was gone before they made this... And it all worked out for them.. Johnny was brought in to replace Ralph cause there was some tension within the group...
I’m glad you guys actually paid attention to the song and walk the listeners through it. It’s different from all the other reviews and reactions from the other critics. Well done chaps!
I have every album. In 2018, Ralph and Johnny trademarked the name so there was a misunderstanding amongst the guys and they didn't speak for a couple of years. When Ricky, Bobby, Mike and Ronnie went on tour, they couldn't tour as New Edition. They had to use the name RBRM (Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike). I went to the 2018 concert in Miami. Excellent by the way!
I love Johnny’s voice so much, and that was him in the last part of the song from the background! Check out Boyz To Men! Same album, but Johnny pops off in that one!
Really good reaction guys. Couple notes, Bobby left in 85 and Johnny Gill filled his spot in 87. This album, “Heartbreak” came out in 88, so no Bobby was not apart of this song or album as he was already engaged in his solo career. Johnny Gill is the one with the deep voice in this song.
the rain song for the movies ya'll are talking about in the end would be Janet Jackson -ft Herb Alpert 'Making love in the Rain'' . The guy in the background singing is Johnny Gill- he also has had some serious hits solo as well as with other couplings eg LSG.
The Heartbeat album came out in 1988. Bobby had already left the group by then and started having an amazing solo career by then. You guys should react to some of New Editions live shows from back in the 80’s and 90’s
Side note fellas….Bobby Brown was on his second album when the NE Heartbrake album came out. Bobby’s first album was King of Stage. You guys should check it out!!!
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had a distinct sound in their productions. Listen too: “Human” by human league; or “if you were here tonight” by Alexander O’Neal
Thank you @mtsula... yes it's Johnny not Bobby 🤨 Yall should check out JOHNNY GILL'S debut album. 1st single called "My my my, my my my my" (no joke) 🔥🔥🔥
They be puttin' stuff in the music" Yeah... they put MUSIC in the music! The "ding ding ding" like at 5:55 sounds like digital piano layered with some kind of synth bell tone, maybe DX7 electric piano tone that was very hot back then. Call and response is a very popular technique in music. One part or voice lays down the main melody and then the other part responds to it. You can do it in vocal parts, or instrumentals.
Not many R&B from Boston. I could only think of Donna Summer, New Kids on the Block, and (ugh) Marky Mark. This is the best New Edition album, IMO. And for the record, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe weren't very strong vocalists. They were mainly given mc breakdowns in later years, beginning here and BelBivDevoe.
My brother knows New Edition I used to live in Boston and he does music he did a song for them a couple of months ago gave you a like I'm new here see you soon
Bobby was not on this album. He had released “Don’t be Cruel” the same time NE Heatbreak was released. They went on Heartbreak Tour with Bobby Brown opening for them.
Jesus guys, New Edition? This album is my jam! I see yall have done a few NE songs, how do yall feel about some Jodeci? Cant get better than those guys in the 90s.
Bobby was already gone from the group this time 😂and wasn’t in the song and Johnny Gill was the one doing the background vocals you guys were talking about towards the end
To answer your question, Bobby Brown, King of RNB, wasn’t even in New Edition at this time and they still made this, one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded, Can You Stand The Rain, and this is considered by many to be there best album, so that’s how much New Edition is the greatest group of the last 50 years. Bobby had been kicked out in late 1985 and Johnny was added in 1987. It was possible because NE is so talented and Johnny was a powerhouse but all in all it just demonstrated how much talent NE has.
I think you all need to listen to more R&B music. Especially from Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. For you to say that the music doesn't sound good in R&B tells me you don't listen to R&B. Or you just don't like it. Which is fine too.

R&B had an epic revival in the late 80s and throughout the 90s, production and song writing was fire.
