    $2K for 6 weeks campaign for 160k streams is really expensive. Granted that there is repeated listens but still lots of money to drop on a release as a solo artist.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому +10

      Copying from another comment because it a similar one... My guess is that even if we stopped the campaign right now, 1 year from now the song will be at over 1 million streams based on the current trajectory and my experience with how long the tail is on these campaigns. At the current pace they'll be at 250k in 7-10 days and will be up to $750 in returns.
      Its definitely a lot of money to drop on a release as a solo artist, especially as a first release. I've worked with solo indie artists with $5k+ budgets and honestly sometimes I want to ask how they get all this money haha.

    My question is, where is this money being recovered from? What about growth on your Spotify that is organic? I'd love to see that side because we can keep running ads to reach people but how many are staying, how many are buying merch, is the business itself turning over a net profit at the end of the day?

    • @RachaelAlexander
      @RachaelAlexander Рік тому

      Exactly my thoughts and questions!🙏🏾

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому +6

      It differs for every artist. Some people rely on streaming and make a living on it, but most have other income sources like touring, merch, Patreon memberships etc and for those people 'streamers' are top of funnel traffic that trickles throughout their business. Its honestly super hard to quantify and figure out where everyone is coming from in a lot of cases.
      Some artists run promotion like this, other paid strategies and a ton of organic content, to build up their following enough where they get picked up by a label, whether indie or major. Or get enough presence where they can get on certain tours or book at certain venues, or negotiate higher payment at shows. There is a LOT of industry gatekeeping crap i've heard in working with artists 1-on-1.
      Almost every artist starts off at a loss, just like most businesses. Some take a long time to turn a profit, some it happens quickly, but of course like businesses a lot fail.

    Congratulations Andrew this is an AMAZING result and success story of how Facebook ad campaigns can make a massive difference to song promotion, and I really hope you get some bigger labels or indie artists approaching you to do there ad campaigns since this is at the cutting edge of promotional tools for artists, and as the old saying goes you have to "speculate to accumulate". I certainly would use your company if I had that kind of budget to spend !!. One question I have, was I see in one point in the video that the daily budget was set at $120/day although the campaign was over 6 weeks which by my math would work out at $5k and not the $3k budget that appears to have been spent. Was the daily amount small to begin with, and then increased along the way with tweaking and adjusting to the ad sets? . I'm very aware from past vids you have shared that going straight in with a large daily budget especially as a new artist can alarm Facebook, and sometimes even cause them to close down ad campaigns hence the "warm-up" approach. Just curious ??

    The ad creative looks like a official spotify cosign, especially with the HQ visuals as backgrounds. you reckon they have alot to do with it as well? looking at them from a marketers perspective, I immediatelly thought wow I would click that if I like what I am hearing.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому

      The ads definitely play a very important role in the performance of the campaign. The song matters most, but the visual def matters too. Especially with how we're tying the song into moods / themes that separate the song from the specific artist.

    • @AndrewSouthworth

      Thanks! You could try ignoring the Christian aspect in the targeting and just target by genre. Meaning is it more R&B, or Pop or Soul or Hip-Hop etc. Facebook still knows who the Christians are so if they're the only ones converting, they'll figure it out even without the targeting.

    In my last release got a good cost p/ click of 8 cents in my campaign, with a small budget only got some push on "Radio" algorithmic playlists but very happy with the results and splash in profile and playlist followers.
    For electronic music i found out that genres interest works best if the song fits with what the genre was 10-8 years ago, but some like Deep House you have 2 very distinct sounds and crowd under the same umbrella that can male your cost go up during testing, in this case the classic 90's sounds like Kerri Chandler and Defected, and the Spinnin Records sound that transformed into Slap House later on.
    Some good interests to be used are record labels, clubs and events that have the same vibe/crowd, but as they are facebook interest you have to think with the mind of about 10 years ago.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому +1

      Glad the videos have helped! Also congrats on the 8 cent conversion cost, thats super good.
      Thats a good point to bring up that FB targets aren't necessarily always up to date. They don't tell us how often they update targets. I'm sure the people in the audiences fluctuate but I wonder what happens when a genre changes definition over time. For example nowadays a lot of what Spotify calls rock music is really just pop, and what they call metal is often hard rock etc.

      They’ve kept pushing it but so far 41% of the streams are algorithmic and 32% are from recurring listeners. Typically the vast majority of streams happen after a campaign is over. So even if we stopped it all now, the song would likely at least triple in stream count in the next year.

    This really helps a upcoming artist to understand how to best promote your music, especially when there are so many scammers out there using bots for playlist etc, its really difficult not to get sidetracked, used/distracted. Only common issue is I notice your budget for adverts is quite high, would adverts on a much lower budget still be worth doing for upcoming bands on a tight budget? • @benschneider2322
      @benschneider2322 9 місяців тому

      Its normal to not have all link clicks result in streams. however if no link clicks result in streams it may be because of your selected countries in your audience. Example: If you have India as a country you are promoting to you may be subject to click farming (fake clicks). You can check your analytics on your top country conversions and if those clicks dont even somewhat match your listeners/streams/followers, remove those countries! I got scammed before and FB/Meta ads won't do anything about it

      So the real value in a campaign like this is what happens after it is over. The vast majority of streams from a Facebook ad campaign happen after the campaign ends, from recurring listeners and algorithmic playlists, this lasts many months or years.
      Right now the raw math doesn't make much sense, because this comes out to around $450 in returns. I’m curious to see what happens when you drive that kind of traffic to a music funnel that you’ve mentioned in other videos vs Spotify? I see the value in Spotify for various reasons but I figured it’d be more of an immediate roi as you have immediate sales in music/Merch sales and up sells where relevant.
      But I guess that only works for more established artist rather than brand new artists?
      I’m also curious to see if that many eyeballs and ears can translate to sales for more high ticket items like playing live private gigs, doing custom songs, etc… ?

      Honestly my opinion is that if you're getting a $0.15 to $0.20 cost consistently on your own with great results, you don't need an agency to help you. If its the time factor, you could probably train someone you know thats looking for a side-gig to run your stuff and you just oversee it.
      For people that struggle to get good results, or any results with their ads an agency makes a ton of sense. Or if they don't have the time to learn it in the first place. But if you've already learned it and get great results you've already come so far that I think i'd keep doing it on your own.
      The reason we don't have another contact form for questions BTW is largely time management. Reviewing ad applications alone takes a surprising amount of time, if we added a general contact form we'd probably spend just as much time answering questions as we did parsing through applications.
      That being said a FAQ is a great idea. What types of questions would you most like to see answered in a FAQ?

      @@AndrewSouthworth Thanks man, thats very cool of you to say. Most people would probably just jump on "selling me" on it lol, rather than give honest recommendation for what is best. Yeah, my results have been fairly good, but i was pretty impressed by the "driving -> deephouse -> etc" interest chain. That is pretty neat lol. So that is what piqued my interest initially. You also seemed to get a pretty good CPC in expensive countries by doing that. I definitely am using the classic T1-2 method from your other videos, about 30%-40% of brazil/mexico, other non english places etc. Don't get me wrong, those guys are great. Have been great loyal fans. But international fanbases don't fill venues. So i don't know if my value is increased by you having "secret weapons" of being able to run way better ads than i am able to? Because i have definitely been trying to find ways to bring all my stuff to the next level.
      I feel like biggest FAQs for noobs would be:
      "How do my socials get linked with your ad platform",
      "Is it your ad manager or mine that serves the ads",
      "What if i have been banned from ad manager",
      "what if you get me banned on ad manager"
      "What if my content depicts ad unfriendly content" (rap music: s*xual/violent language, s*xual depictions, guns, drugs, etc),
      "What will be required of me?" (responsible for rendering ad videos or not, etc) (having your own landing pages)
      .. for me my biggest question would be cost and also how that is billed (if it is percentage, flat rate, or CPC guarantee - blanket CPC (ie 30 CPC guarantee and you pocket the difference, etc)). I have looked at a few marketing agencies back before i found your videos. It can seem pretty daunting and convoluted at times, extremely shady sometimes too.
      I definitely understand that about how busy you are lol. I will admit when i saw your site and submission form, i was tempted to instead fill the form with BS info to send some inquiries about the platform, rather than comment here. I am probably not the only one either :p So I'm sure an FAQ would at least cut down on people doing that. Anyways congrats on the launch of the platform, it always seems like you are hustling so hard! Thanks for the reply!

Would love to continue doing ads with them but with 60% towards ads and 40% for them, it's too much lost money. I recommend learning Meta Ads on your own. They do deffo a better job than yourself ever will, or myself, but due to the 40% cut, you 'lose' a lot of money which you could use on your own ads. You won't get such a good cost per click as them, but still better than 40% for them.

      I think this is actually normal - the case Andrew is highlighting is an extreme example where everything goes very right at the exact right moments. Right genre, right algo bump and it took off. I would say 90-95% of artists are going to see exactly what you are seeing which is you pay around 40-60c per conversation event and get nothing more than those exact streams (no algo pickup, DW, Radio etc). Over time maybe a little of that kicks in but this was not a normal case he is highlighting.

      @@tuberliciousness Not true. Most of us "Andrew disciples" have figured out how many listeners/saves/streams we need to trip the RR algorithm and what budget gets us there and what doesn't. The same budget spread out over 30 days won't do anything compared to one week. I know that because we tried that (once). Now we have data and metrics to compare each release and we know if we're on track or not. If your CPR is high, you have to have a higher budget the first week or so. It's either low CPR or high budget (if you're mostly relying on ads), but it works if you hit the right listener/saves/streams threshold, but you have to hit it the first week or two. It seems to be prorated, so the longer it takes, the higher the threshold and then gets too hard to hit with just ads.

    Hi Andrew, thanks for all the videos and advices, such a great value !
    I have a question because I recently started to run ads again, after a looooong time on UA-cam ads.
    Maybe it’s just because my FB Business account is not old enough but my Cost Per Conversion is always really high (almost 1€/conversion), no matter what I try…
    Moreover, I wanted to start « broad », with no targeted demographics but I definitely have an issue with 65+, they take all the clicks and conversions but no streams at the end …
    How would you suggest to warm up a brand new account and run a first version of a campaign ? I decided to only target Tiers 1 & 2, the other ones are too random in the end …
    Thanks a lot !!

    • @onyxxproductions8187
      @onyxxproductions8187 Рік тому

      Not Andrew, but we've always had the same problem, every campaign. It usually starts at $1 a conversion the first day of a release, maybe $0.85 if we're lucky, but it does come down over time. Here are some strategies that have helped us: When you first launch, check your campaigns on the ad level in the afternoon, not the campaign or the adset (assuming each adset has multiple ads with different creatives or parts of the song). Turn off individual ads that are not doing well and leave on the ones that are (We usually check and do this several times as the day progresses for the first few days). Each day is like a race, and the winner gets to stay on the whole day. Make sure you check the engagement/cost per link click - sometimes the link click cost is low but the conversion cost is high because people have their tracking off. The link click cost is a better metric. Don't turn adsets off at first, just ads. After a few days, it becomes clear which ads are doing the best. Leave the other ones off and just let the winners run. Turn off adsets if no ads are winners. As your ad gets reactions and data, the algorithm will have a better idea of who to send it to. As your CPR comes down, lower your campaign budget. We've found that the lower the budget, the lower the CPR. We start with three campaigns with $30 each, each one with different targets and lower them throughout the first week as the CPR comes down. If your campaign budget is too big for one campaign, your CPR will be sky-high, so three $30 campaigns work better than one $90 campaign. If nothing is working, sometimes launching a new creative a few days in can be like a miracle, but most of the time, your ad just needs more social proof and data. After a few weeks, we can get the daily CPR down to $0.20 to $0.35, sometimes lower. If you change anything after the campaign is launched, you send the adset back into learning mode and higher CPR, so don't edit things. Turning ads on and off doesn't put the adset back into learning mode, so start with plenty of ads to experiment with. We tried targeting high-paying countries and the CPR was much higher, but it came down some with a super low budget ($5 a day). We have fine-tuned our country list over the years, removing countries that take up too much of the budget or don't show up on Spotify (poorer countries have more people who don't pay for Spotify premium and can only shuffle). You have to do a lot of daily tracking to figure all this out for your music. Hope that helps.

      Rough back of the envelope math is 1000 streams is about 3-4 dollars. We’ll say best case scenario it’s 4 x 161k div by 1k yields a solid $644 dollars. 😅 but yeah it’s kind of understood Spotify is almost always a losing game unless you have the financial backing of a top record label. Once you get the engine running you can get a lot more streams with less but this is the challenge a lot of independent artists face.

      Not Andrew, but the same thing happened to us, but it was two singles. Nothing happened, and then we found Andrew. We re-released one and ran ads and it did go back into Release Radar, but we didn't have a big enough budget to trip the algorithm. The only difference re-releasing makes is you can't pitch it to Spotify editors. The songs stays in all the playlists and you keep all your save and streams. We followed Andrew's old budgets, but he gets crazy low CPR, so it's not about the budget, but how many listeners you're getting a day. Now we just do whatever budget we need to get around 100 conversions a day the first week. By our calculations, you need around 600 to 800 listeners to trip the algorithm (with a decent save and playlist add rate). We did it once in one week with a high budget, but now we just spread it out over two weeks because the CPR comes down over time. We did one campaign early on that was a lower budget spread out over a month, and it didn't do anything even though we got 500 saves and 700 listeners, so it's prorated - the faster you get there, the better.

      Okay sweet! I will say that most songs don't profit this quickly, or don't profit at all. In those cases the end goal is that these campaigns function as top of funnel fan development, because you can't book shows or collab with the artists you want to etc. unless you have an audience already.
      Meaning, maybe they only make back 25% that year, and 50% of the investment lifetime, but they also gained X monthly listeners, X followers on socials, X followers on Spotify, etc... So the lump sum of fanbase development and percentage of money they get back makes the whole thing worth it.
