    Awesome tutorial Nate. I volunteer at a shelter and some dogs know Zero commands. I have been struggling with the “down” more than the sit and find myself giving up too fast. Watching this made me realize what I’m doing wrong and I’ll implement the tips presented from now on. 👍

    Awesome video Nate 👏 My favorite part is when Elvis finally went into the side down without your help, how happy and excited you were and the genuine affection you gave him. I can only imagine how proud of himself he was to make you proud of him 😁🥰❤️

    It is really nice seeing a whole training session from start to finish. A lot of videos will show the basic concept of what they are trying to do, then stop recording and show the end product. I think it is important to see how you work through the middle part! Also, Elvis is such a beautiful dog! He is having so much fun with the training! I really hope he ended up getting adopted!

    I love how the camera may as well not be there. You are totally there for that dog, not the audience. A subtle but very meaningful contrast with most trainers.

    I really enjoyed watching the first episode training Elvis, you make it easy to understand just what you want him to do with lease pressure!

    What I really like about this one is that it's an untrained rescue dog and not an intelligent Malinois or German Shepherd. Plus the additional commentary really helps bring home some of the points which you see on your other videos, but you can see when they're being applied. Also love seeing your patience, the amount of verbal (and fun) praise you give, and knowing when to stop. All things I'll have to remember when I get my pooch!

    Hi Nate, congratulations for your channel and your work! Very often I find myself smiling like a child when I see you having true fun training dogs (like in the piggyback command with Arry). Here I’ve got a little bit confused when you used the “free” marker instead of your classic “yes” marker every time you rewarded Elvis, even if you went towards him and he was static. Cheers man! You rule! Respectfully: Raul PS: Thanks for unveiling the secrets of scent detection! There are very very few persons out there that either know or share!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому

      Thank you! When you are shaping behaviors without the verbal command, you can use the terminal marker or the continuation marker. Just think of what the word predicts. Continuation marker only predicts a reward, while the terminal marker predicts a release and reward. If our dogs are not in a commanded position and we use the continuation marker, it doesn't make it a stay command. I hope this helps! :)

    Keep up the great work. Also will you be doing seperate video on how to teach the Markers? 😊

    I've seen some trainers just use food to lure a dog into the "down" position. I'm curious to learn what is the advantage of using both pressure and food.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +9

      Great questions. When you only use food the dog learns to go into the position to access the reward. This is a combination of positive reinforcement and negative punishment. The main downside to only using reward-based training is that the training is dependent on how much the dog wants the reward. If the dog doesn't care about the reward or is already full, it's going to be difficult to get the dog to a level of reliable obedience. However, when you add the leash pressure, you are now using a combination of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and negative punishment, which is very powerful. The main difference in using the combination of pressure and reward-based training is that the dog doesn't have a choice. They must complete the behavior. Lastly, it is also very clear to the dog what you would like from them, so it minimizes confusion and also increases confidence by teaching the dog how to turn off pressure by complying and in the end you get a dog that will perform the commands with consistent reliability. :)

    Is there a video on the first session with him Nate? I work with shelter dogs and I’m getting frustrated that I can’t seem to teach a simple sit 😢 I use the hand up command, but they tend to hop up instead of sit. I also tried upward leash pressure. Nope. And when I try to gently press down on the backend, then turn their head around to look at my hand 😣

    I like how it sounds like a little bit of Pauly Shore from Encino Man when you say "Buuuuddy." Do you have any suggestions for fixing the side sit or side down position?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +2

      Lol! If a pet dog is doing a side sit or side down, I usually don't try to fix it because some dogs will do that because it's more comfortable on their hips. However, if its for a competition dog then I will use what's known as a shaping box. You can see an example of a shaping box in this video: ua-cam.com/video/DPYryIDZe7I/v-deo.html Thanks for the question! :)

    Why you said Free, not Yes?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому

      Free = Release and reward
      Yes = Reward.
      I usually will use "Yes" If I want the dog to stay or remain calm. Free (terminal marker) will often trigger more excitement. :)

    Just to be clear.....
    You are using word "free" then reward... Without using verbal commands only physical leash pressure... for down,sit and place...
