One person called him the Morgan Freeman of rallying. It's no surprise that they gained widespread recognition because of the games, especially the pre-DIRT titles where Nicky and in some games Derek Ringer were the only co-drivers ingame.
@Lyricoholic "Plus" means with your foot on the throttle, "minus" means with your foot off of the throttle. "Tightens" means that the corner gets sharper, "Opens" means that the corner becomes wider.
The more open or (slack) the diffs are the more noise they make, slow twisty tarmac stages require the diffs to be more open than normal to help the car get round the tight twisty corners, the more open they are the more drivetrain shunt you get on lift or braking! This is the the box, props, diffs and driveshafts all going from one preset setting to full lock all in a tenth of a second, effectively like engine braking but in this case the whole system in braking, remember this car had triple active diffs so the diffs are actively shuffling power from front to back and left to right depending on the corners and how much grip each wheel has!!! Hence the noise even when Colin is on and off the throttle through a long and bumpy corner!!! Not just banging down the gears, notice him thumb the red button on the shifter going down!!! This is locking all the diffs to help slow and stabilise the car under hard braking!!! and helps with disk and pad wear.
true, but the red button is for reverse gear in case of spin or regular reverse mode. that focus had 3 knobs for 3 diffs: front, centre and rear. sometimes during the stage on tarmac rallyes, colin had to lock or open front or rear diff to prevent tyre and bearring wear. they used to disingage rear diff while they are cruising on stage section to minimalize fuel consumption.
Watching this one after watching Tommi's video is quite interesting, the car setup is totally different and the driving style obviously. Colin's car is totally loose, the front just goes everywhere he points and the rear helps the car turn while Tommi's rear is much more planted. Gotta admit this one is alot less boring! :P
@bornelaspt That is I think because youá watched his onboard with the Impreza and not the Lancer, is that right? :) Impreza was not so loose since McRae left to Ford, whilst Tommi´s Mitsubishi was also quite loose and he was driving it spectacularly too. This however is great - Colin, tarmac and that sound of the Focus
Courtesy of ewrc-results. Unfortunately, mechanical issues prevented Colin from finishing the stage, thus screwed Colin's chance to win Rally Monte Carlo. :/
Got used to seeing these mechanical sequential shifters nowadays with big travel and a firm pull required, and they seem to clunk rather loudly. This one really looks like a slight flick of a finger would get you a shift, I wonder how it was on really bumpy sections and stuff.
Straight cut gears whine!! They don't clunk like this! The noise you are hearing is drivetrain shunt, as the car goes down the gears the diffs all lock helping braking!!!
Sergio B line means when there is some short bends and you can take a virtually straight line through them, not having to treat them as bends individually.
@cosminjur +1 you don't see petter counter streering except when negotiating hairpins - I like that he is careful - I want him to win (or someone to beat loeb!)
sequentional gearbox like in motorcycle up and down but you use clutch only for start then no need clutch only for stop. you hear special "teeth" not like in normal car bevel gears gearbox. Rally drivers brake with engine (not only) downshifting you hear those straight teeths screaming and special differentials without them they can't go like that :D
Yes, in a dominant style too. Check out Corsica 97 and 98. Also 2 wins in 1996 on the last 2 tarmac events of the season (San Remo and Catalunya I think). In 1995 he basically won the penultimate one before his own team made him take a penalty. His last tarmac win was in 2000, again in Catalunya.
Nicky Grist is The Voice.
I know you left this comment 3 years ago but i saw it and just had to ask if you're buying Dirt 4? lol
phil mills is my favourite co driver.

With Nicky Grist's voice it feels like
I'm playing the old Colin McRae Rally games again
14:21 Look at that slide.
One of my favorite onboards of all time. 14:23 coming up over the col. The next 20 seconds going back down the hill are so epic.
10 years ago...that was a gold age of newly wrc. thank you amjayes. You reload my brain, again :-)
J'adore la sonorité de la mécanique !! 😍 Ces envoûtants chants de transmission...

Nicki grist’s brings back memories from colon mcrae rally the game ‘…. Over finish’
Colin is always a great inspiration
5:30 - Faster! - ok
5:38 - Faster!!
That's the sound of the blowoff valve I think...the 99-02 Focuses did that normally and I loved it
wide open all the time. Miss you Colin
Thanks for this gift.
Anyone 2020 December? :-)

the greatest driver on the greatest stage
14:20 to 14:52, soooo entertaining
especially 14:41!!
This inspired so many of my drives to work in the morning although my driving is not quite as tidy as sir Colin's.
Want NG on my sat nav :)
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIncredibile!!!
Col de Turini was quite dry that year. Sometimes its full of snow on the top.
La caméra est à peine trop haute dommage mais très belle bagarre avec le volant, c'est magique !
Pour cette video, youtube devrais metre les boutons "j'aime" et "j'aime"...
Aha. Thanks for cleatring this up
@IloTimo
also says "plus" and "minus" the same as when he says " 4 left tightens" or "3 right opens"?
@2:30 : How to turn right with steering wheel pointing on the left ! Pure Colin style :D
@bornelaspt That is I think because youá watched his onboard with the Impreza and not the Lancer, is that right? :) Impreza was not so loose since McRae left to Ford, whilst Tommi´s Mitsubishi was also quite loose and he was driving it spectacularly too.

plus is accelerate soon out of the corner minus is accelerate when the corner ends

the downhill part is exciting! look how mcrae power-slide on slippery tarmac
holy shit thats a long stage haha

No, that's the sound of the gearbox. These Focus used straight cut teeth on the gears, and that causes this sound.
Do you have any onboard of Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya in this Rallye?
Great Video!!
I got a mini champ of this car great investment for memorial for a great champion
It’s like the shifter on my old Logitech wheel, lol.
what did he means whit "plus" or "minus" ?
I would probably have hit the brakes at 7:24.
Even on the games, where you can hit "restart"... lol
@ 14:40 that was sick
+Sergio B I'm guessing Grist means that the McRae should drive completely straight, but I'm not sure myself.
Straight cut gears whine!! They don't clunk like this! The noise you are hearing is drivetrain shunt, as the car goes down the gears the diffs all lock helping braking!!!
@AlejjSi Yea, Impreza 2002
Focus RS, the impreza Colin drove was manual
pliz 720p :-(
Just watched Loeb's onboard this very same stage, and the difference is huge. Loeb goes like if the road was completly dry!
does anyone know what "line" in the pace-notes means?
Line as in racing line
Sergio B line means when there is some short bends and you can take a virtually straight line through them, not having to treat them as bends individually.
line
It means stay in the middle of the road, don't drift wide or cut narrow
@cosminjur +1 you don't see petter counter streering except when negotiating hairpins - I like that he is careful - I want him to win (or someone to beat loeb!)
I wonder if there was something good on the bbq at 18:26 . Man, I'm hungry.
It means take the racing line.
The gearbox sound like it's slamming something when he's downshifting?
sequentional gearbox like in motorcycle up and down but you use clutch only for start then no need clutch only for stop. you hear special "teeth" not like in normal car bevel gears gearbox. Rally drivers brake with engine (not only) downshifting you hear those straight teeths screaming and special differentials without them they can't go like that :D
Did Mcrae ever won a tarmac rally?
Yes, in a dominant style too. Check out Corsica 97 and 98. Also 2 wins in 1996 on the last 2 tarmac events of the season (San Remo and Catalunya I think). In 1995 he basically won the penultimate one before his own team made him take a penalty. His last tarmac win was in 2000, again in Catalunya.
thanks - foreversideways com
man the onboard of Petter Solberg on this stage looks so timid
Colin "faster" McRae
You should want to see the real tarmac king, Sébastien Loeb, on this stage. This very same year he was lefting everyone behind...
Pirelli Tyres :(
To much grip :)
