Here I am listening to this in 2022…This was one of the GRONKIEST Free’s I have ever witnessed. I have nothing but stellar memories of being on that lawn that night. Free>What’s The Use was absolutely inter-dimensional for me. Then right into a flawless Meatstick… golly. Such a great, great, GREAT show.
SET 1: Limb By Limb, Farmhouse, Back on the Train, Divided Sky, Train Song, Llama, Driver, Runaway Jim SET 2: Punch You in the Eye > Free > What's the Use? > Meatstick > Mike's Song -> Twist > Weekapaug Groove ENCORE: Harry Hood
Man, these AUDs are a gift... SBDs are not like they used to be anyways I hope the tapers never stop taping. Its still and always will be the ONLY way to really hear how that air was moved
I swear, they introduced meat stick this summer and played it almost every show. I was in Atlanta for 4th of July and I think they played at both nights lol. I definitely thought it was Fire on the Mountain at first. We all dragged ourselves home and told everybody I don't know what it is but it's something about meatstick Sure enough, we found out what it was all about it oswego! And then to cap it all off, I'm pretty sure they ended that massive Cypress serenading us with the meat stick, we were all worn out and basically collapsed on the ground. I had a black "shocks my brain" sticker with a chicken leg on it on one of my rack mounts for years after that. They sure thought a lot about that meat stick. I don't think a phish song has ever gotten that sort of treatment before or since Of course, you don't hear much about that now because the kids were too young to have been there and the rest of us can barely remember it LOL
I think this was my last phish show. Either this or MCI in DC that same year but i cant remember the date of that show. That was the year the goofy lyrics became too much after the novelty of the big left turns in the music wore off and it no longer seemed unexpected and exciting. Nothing deep to keep me there. They were def best as a prog band. Of course this is ALL OPINION.
this is was what summer was supposed to feel like.
The best Free ever! And I fucking love Free, every version, always . . .
