    Sounds like a great plan. Can't wait for the construction. My husband likes to visit many thrift shops, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, etc., for windows and many building materials for a lot less than retail price. Just a suggestion, that really helped us saved on our garden expenses.

    I have a 6x8 Harbor Freight greenhouse. I have modified it quite a bit, but yes... it's junk. I look for a pile of crap laying in my garden anytime there's a huge storm. Good luck my friend. I'll follow your journey for when mine finally fails me and I can replicate yours.

    Thank you for convincing me to NOT buy a Harbor Freight Greenhouse kit ! I owned a National double-strength glass house years ago (40 x 16) with an attached potting shed at the North end.. I miss it so much.

      Not that I want or intend to shy people away from them. They are inexpensive for people with little money. But they are called a "hobby" greenhouse for a reason. They just don't hold up. And forget using them straight out of the box

    You really need to reinforce the panels, and the greenhouse is really meant to be reinforced and have a base. It’s a great frame. I really prefer the 8x6 for this reason. Less panels and less maintenance but to each his own.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  4 роки тому

      If you watched my modification video, you will see I did reinforce the panels and the frame. The issue is not with that, although you should not buy a greenhouse that requires a ton of mods anyways. The issue with the Harbor Freight greenhouse is how delicate it is specifically the panels. Every year I had to replace some because of deterioration and not to mention that if you don't reinforce them, your neighbors will have free panels. As for it being a great frame, try just putting it together as it is and see how long it lasts. The first wind storm and it's goodbye greenhouse. Anything that is meant to have lots of work done to it just to make it functional is an absolute waste of time and money. I say good riddance to it.

    You should team up or contact window workers changing out windows with new ones..or real estate flippers..that should get you windows for your greenhouse

    I want to see the glass greenhouse. Or should we call it glass-house :D Cant wait!
    PS: Dont use plastic on your compost bin. The plastic can fall in the bin an pollute the soil. Dispose it in the recycling center. We have enough plastic waste on our planet.

    I have aHarbor Freight greenhouse and plan on converting it to windows. Mine has not lasted as long as yours with NH winds and snow. We built a wooden frame inside the greenhouse and screwed the aluminum to the wood frame. But as you said, the panels got brittle and broke apart and flew off. I can’t trust using it. I will be monitoring your progress and hope that I can learn from you. Good luck.

    • @Growyourheirlooms

  • @prudniksthumb3781
    @prudniksthumb3781 3 роки тому

    Right off the bat I’m thinking you should have used silicone on both sides of the panels to keep them secure forever. Worked for me

      It’s been in 100 mph gusts here in north Texas and it’s just stuck in the dirt 😂 granted it’s by a house and fence

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  3 роки тому

      The problem was not with securing them, it was keeping them from deteriorating from the UV. They blow apart because they become weak and no amount of silicon is going to prevent that

    I really appreciate this video and your candor. I just watched your 10 reasons to have a greenhouse and was admiring your greenhouse and thought maybe I should have elected to get the HF greenhouse. I have several windows I have been holding onto to build a greenhouse. I keep wondering if I should have got the HF one. But I just couldn’t help thinking it wouldn’t last as long and there would have to be some kind of quality issue. So thanks so much for this and reaffirming my decision to build my own with Windows. Hopefully this year. Hope you make videos of your build.

    Hi there, nice video.
    I was curious if you sealed your panels ends with silicone or tape on the open end before you set them in greenhouse? I’m trying to figure out if that would make a difference and prolong life of the panels. If not, maybe someone else out there has?
    Thank you.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  3 роки тому

      I did not use tape or silicon. I could find no reason to assume they would prevent the panels from deteriorating from UV breakdown

      @@Growyourheirlooms Thank you.
      I already have kit and I’m in process of putting it up. I’m actually considering adding on a UV film on to panels before I install them. Like the kind for car windows, but clear, not tinted. But I’m not sure if it will help panels or if it will affect plant growth inside greenhouse. Any thoughts on that?

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  3 роки тому

      @@tricia19632004 I do know that plants need ultraviolet light. How much you can subdue it and still get good production I don't know. But it may be worth the experiment if you can get a longer life from the panels

      @@Growyourheirlooms After even more research this afternoon, I’m not really clear IF HF Greenhouse even HAS UV protection on panels. I found info saying people called and emailed to find out which side of panel has UV coating and were kinda given the run around. Im gonna try calling HF again. Ugh.
      Thank you for your responses. 😁

    Your plan for building a new greenhouse is, incidentally, the exact same plan Harbor Freight used when designing that greenhouse. Cut corners, plan on replacing a lot of parts, ultimately end up building your own.

    Every one of these harbor freight green houses seem to have many problems you have to spend more to brace and repair them than the original price, probaly made in CHINA .
