i caught a musky the other day and all i have is a 6'6" heavy action rod with an abu garcia ambassadeur and the bait i was using was just a small mepps musky killer. it was a 39" and put up a real fight
I live in Minnesota and I catch a lot of decent pike, but I’ve always wanted to catch a musky. I never really knew how to start and I’ve tried it a couple times, I just figured you just use big northern lures, but I never caught one. This video is such a great help and I love watching videos about fishing right in my home state This was super helpful! Keep catching hogs!
Killer! I was obsessed as a kid in catching musky and have caught a few. Fast forward 20 years and I fish alot of bass/pike. Watching you guys has actually enticed me to dust off the ol musky rod and musky tackle box and planning to throw for some soon. Thank you.
Glad you mentioned the bass rig. I've only been musky fishing one time in my life. So, I used the biggest rods I have, They're for big catfish but they work. I was pulling double magnum 10's with my Abu 6500 C3 "Catfish Special". The setup wasn't nearly as nice as my father-in-laws musky rod and reel, but it got the job done.
Hey Lee and Robbie, thanks for putting in the time giving to the community like you do. I've found that the muskie fishing community is pretty generous and welcoming. I've actually caught a couple employing tactics I've picked up from TA videos. One thing I've noticed in videos that isn't really mentioned much is often I'll see people set the hook back in the direction of the fish on the eight. I've lost one eight fish just from taking too long to net it in very shallow water, and that's the only one I've ever hooked. I believe I pulled straight up on that one. On the other two fish I've had a realistic chance of hooking on the eight, I also pulled straight up (rod loaded up but it didn't get hooked, yes hooks were sharp) and on the second pulled away before the fish had even closed its mouth. It's hard to not underreact if a fish eats on the eight out of nowhere when you had no idea it's there, and it's hard not to overreact if you're expecting it but have limited experience. Especially standing in the water with the fish. Do you think it's a good plan to condition myself to set the hook in the direction of the fish when possible?
Shimano Sojourn was my first musky rod, it was 50 bucks and has caught me a lot of fish. In fact I still use it sometimes, nothing wrong with those rods.
I just caught a 48" muskie yesterday. I was rigged for bass so I had 20lb braid with 12 lb fluro leader.... Just unbelievable. Amazing fight, never thought I was gonna land it
Good info. video guys. After chasing tools around the boat I finally mounted a long magnet on the side of the boat. All the tools stick on there and don't have to look for them.
I've literally never tried for musky before. I've caught a 10 pound largemouth, 8 pound smallmouth, 30 pound striper, and a 45 pound flathead cat, yet I only just discovered that I live 30 minutes from the lake where my state record musky was caught 🤦 Well, now it's time to learn
This is a awesome video . I am a pike fisherman who's favorite fish is a musky. I have never caught one but never really went for them. I am going up to lake nipping in Canada for 5 days so i would like to spend at least one day fishing for them. i cant waste my whole trip not catching any fish. Anyway it was very informative even the casting part was really great i always back lash the bait casting real and its a huge mess. Anyway i really in joy watching you guys. thanks again
Enjoy watching you guys! Thanks for the videos. I reeled in my first musky the other day. As I told Sam with Blue Ride Musky, these videos of pointers and recommendations go a long way. For instance, never would have thought about something simple like buying a pair of bolt cutters to cut the hooks. I can say I safely caught and released that beautiful species off a fish with no harm done. So thanks guys! Tight lines!
I really appreciate This video I’m not new to fishing but I am new to musky fishing I fish northern pike in Fairbanks Alaska where I’m from but I am getting ready to head to Minnesota and I really want to land a musky it’s on my bucket list I think this video really helped so thank you
That was the most straight forward start to finish video I have ever watched. Big time thank you to you guys. I'm not a big fisherman but my brother and I are determined that musky is where we will get serious. Get a better camera fellas, your videos are top notch! Keep em coming.
the first muskie I ever caught cut through my 120lb fluorocarbon leader just thrashing its head while in the net. It is wire leaders only for this guy! Great vid BTW, I have been watching your channel quite a bit the past few weeks and love the content. The Lake St. Clair videos in particular take me back. I grew up in Sarnia, ON and fished LSC quite a bit as a teenager. I never did figure the muskie out but as I've matured as an angler I'm excited to go back and get into some of those spotted skie's!
Seriously great video. This is like musky public service... I would love to see some techniques for the various baits out there - especially rubber and glide baits. Also, finding musky holding structure and how to plan your drift to fish that particular feature would be great to see as well. This fall I hope to try some sucker fishing using your sucker rig video as instruction. As always, thanks guys...
Thanks a lot guys, what a helpful video. After years of trolling my dad and I are finally getting into musky casting. Planning to tear up Lake St. Clair this summer!
I know for bass, reel gears have come a long way - high-end, high-speed reels no longer lack the torque and drag lower speed baitcast reels once had.. not sure if this holds true for the larger musky stuff. I use a Cardiff 400 for 8" Huddleston (big single jighook swimbait rod) for largemouth - it works great for the price. I also have a lews Superduty 300 with the power handle I'm tempted to repurpose.. I have an iRod Bailey Swim (8' XH bass big swimbait rod), I bet it could throw bucktails (it's rated up to like 3-10oz lures, I think)
Super cool gear recommendations. But um, where's the video on locating muskies in each season? What about structural elements? What about forage preferences? What about lake recommendations? What about using electronics to locate them? What about preferred cover and habitat?
I watch alot of fishing channels and I mean alot lol today's angler is the only one I'm subscribed to. Just one question Is there a reason you guys choose a full grip over a split grip? Thanks for the awesome videos.
Wow what a great video guys! This was the one stop shop informative video, thanks so much can’t wait to get out there and out these tips to use! Thanks so much!
Great video for people wondering about starting out. As always you guys put out great content. I've learned a lot watching your channel. I've been wondering about the net you used for awhile . So that was good info for me. I'm also want to see you make a video about the ins and outs of building custom baits and going commercial with them. I think that information would be helpful as well.
Thanks! Great video! By the looks of it, if one has become proficient in a fewvdifferent bass fishing techniques, they can manage this. No worms! I like it and can't wait for my opportunity to get out and do this. Video saved ✅️
Great Info guys. I've rented a air bnb on otisco lake in ny and have 7 days to slay some muskie. I've read it's a well kbown musky lake. If anyone in the comments is from that area and wants to fish with me I'm there from August 5 thru the 13th.
I love how you never seem to be trying to sell your lures in these videos Lee. Even more incredible that you mention and use other brands on camera. I cant watch bucher videos because its just a sales pitch for his products. Thanks for the wisdom
Dumbest fish in the lake? Hmmm.. ok.. lol The reason they bite baits while the rod is swishing in the water is because they are the top predator in fresh water. Would you say a shark is the dumbest fish in the ocean? I'd hope not, because they are very intelligent but ONCE AGAIN.. The TOP PREDATOR in their waters. What about a shoreline muskie gear video? I do not have access to a boat but access to some shoreline muskie fishing. If you were fishing from the shore, what rod would be best? I like spinning gear and i would want to step it down in action for alittle more action lol..
Until I can get a better rod would a 7’6” med-heavy catfish rod with a 6500 Ambassador conventional throwing small buck tails work? I can throw the Penn 140 Squidder or Penn 500 Jig aster on for some extra fun. I think I have 50 or 60 lb mono on the reel. If I tie my own leaders what size barrel swivels and snap swivels should I look to be using? I had though stainless leaders would be the only way to go but fluorocarbon seems much more economical. Would the stainless leader be recommended let’s say for bank fishing near rip rap?
And for Pete's sake when out in a boat on open water, wear the PFD. I've seen too many fisherpersons slip and go head first into the drink. Summer time its not too bad because the water is warm, but in the fall when its cold that cold water gasp could lead to drowning.
Im gonna be trying this year to get Muskie through the ice here in PA. If I do it will be my first. Hopefully I can get out on open water before that but it doesn't look like that's happening.
Great video guys very informative as usual! You ever want to take a guy out to catch his first musky I'll volunteer! Lol I'm hitting st Clair tomorrow with my dad and niether of us have "landed" a musky but I'm super pumped! Thanks again guys for everything you do!
@@TodaysAngler thanks robbie and Lee! No musky on our trip to st clair. But a fat 34" gator on my homemade titanium bucktail. And my dad caught an almost 5lbs 22 giant smallmouth on my same lure I'm definitely onto something here. Let me know if you want a free bait to try! Thank you for everything you do. ❤️
Thank you for such a great video. Im new to musky and boy is it an investment. Think if I buy any more stuff. My wife will make me sleep in my truck. Lol
Where I’m from in wv. We have big musky but my 8’6 rod can be a bit long my dad uses 7’2 and a 7’4 rod. Cause some of the smaller rivers we fish have monsters but sometimes I have to steal my dads other rod from him to be able to cast but on lakes I think my dads jealous of my rod. I also right hand cast and retrieve bc all the shops near me mostly sell rh retrieve reals but with spinning reals I lh retrieve.
Honest question: Any chance you could put this and maybe some other how-to's on a DVD and put it up for sale? I would buy that in a heart beat! Maybe throw in how to live-bait and how to techniques like depth, structure?
i have a 7.3 jerk rod that casts pretty well, fish large pike in smaller rivers and if I'm on a lake, i fish from a boat. i don't see the need for a rod longer that 8 feet except maybe for figure 8
Great video but you missed going over leader sizes for 80# braid. Can you use 80# FC with 80# braid. The shop was out of 100# FC and 120# seems to thick to tie with a uni to uni so I grabbed the #80 instead. Any thoughts?
I wanted to try and not use them. I cracked my rod tip eye last season. I'm assuming from me being an idiot and reeling to much in and hitting the swivel. Will I get too much line twist without the swivel?
I have the sojurn rod here in wesr virginia the rod goes from 2 to 10 oz lure they are not that big i use okuma cirtrix it can handle 1/4 up to what ever i use a smaller rod and use the same reel top water is the only way to go !!!!!! I have caught a musky on rapala more than anything j15 f 18 med heavy bass rod here it works well also i would not know how to act if i caught one as big as you guys do!!!!!!
What i would like to know the most is how do you know if there are musky in the body of water your fishing. I live along a long ass waterway with dam after dam , makes it tough to find them
First is water temps which will help you determine pre spawn, spawn or post spawn. From there you will have a slightly better idea of what to look for. In Spring once the water gets to 50-60 degrees fish will begin to spawn, generally you want to find larger shallow bays, if you have any areas where a stream or creek feeds into the body body of water your fishing then that’s also a good place. If that water temp is steadily warming and hanging out around 45 degrees fish tend to stack up just outside of those areas waiting to move in but will stay in slightly deeper water. Once the water gets into the mid 60’s Shallow, Shallow, Shallow. Bait will begin moving into the shallows. I have a lot of success trolling weed lines in the bays. As the water gets into the high 60’s-70 the fish are done spawning and leave the bays and flats and spread out. The fish will stay relatively shallow but can be a lot harder to find. I like to fish shallow structure and rock piles. It’s even better if I can find bait around the structure. Or underwater points near bays. In those conditions use a reaction bait to draw them out. 70-80 they move deep. Find the deep water and fish ledges, drop offs and points. Find hard transitions from shallow to deep. A lot of the time if you can find bait near the transition you will find musky. I like to stay mobile as the fish are still relatively aggressive so I don’t like to spend to much time unless if it looks fishy. From there you really are waiting for water temperature to drop. Once the water begins to cool back down fish tend move in shallow again, but unlike spawn they won’t typically be isolated to bays. I like to fish the tops of points and sand bars. Shoreline structure is also money that time of year. As you get into fall the water falls below 65. That time of year it’s very dependent on your specific body of water. But most people will agree it’s the most difficult time of year to find the fish. Late fall 50 and under get in the deep water. Look for hard transitions to the deep water, steep drop offs, ledges and breaks. The fish slow down this time of year so they won’t come out of the deep to hit a bait that’s running among the break, your going to have to put the bait right in front of the fish so keep your bait deep. And don’t fish areas with no bait, find bait near those transitions. That’s just a very rough foundation On where to start. It can be very dependent on your specific body of water and learning the bait fish and musky behavior. Scouting and learning the Topography of an area is key to finding musky. But remember it’s not the fish of 10,000 casts for no reason. I live in Wisconsin and have been fishing for musky going on 13 years now and I’m still learning every time I go out. If it were easy everyone would keep a musky rod in their bass boat. So just don’t get discouraged. And one last thing, don’t get overwhelmed by the endless choice of lures. They are expensive, and you won’t understand the fish well enough to utilize them all. I suggest starting with 3 styles max and build your collection with what you know. And as the seasons change or you think you have a good understanding of what your doing add another one by one. Don’t just buy 1 of everything!
Step 1 have a boat
Step 2 cast using ocean rod and reels
Step 3 cast using a lure no smaller than a small dog.
Step 4 repeat till 10000 casts are achieved then something huge eats your small dog lure.
Alexander Schumacher especially Medusa’s the 8oz ones are expensive. But ocean rods and reels eh that’s a bit far st croci musky mojos are where it’s at. I run round body sub reels or the revo max.
Hah hah
@Hunter fishman should have brought the scuba gear
LOL
i caught a musky the other day and all i have is a 6'6" heavy action rod with an abu garcia ambassadeur and the bait i was using was just a small mepps musky killer. it was a 39" and put up a real fight
Funny I had the same set up rod and everything and still year 8 still no musky
I've got a 7' fast heavy abu garcia with an ambassadeur on it too. No musky on it yet but I've got pike, bass and walleye on it great set up.
Chump change

Shimano Sojourn was my first musky rod, it was 50 bucks and has caught me a lot of fish. In fact I still use it sometimes, nothing wrong with those rods.
Rod Belding just picked one of these up! What reel did you pair with it?
The big issue with these seems to be packaging - Amazon is full of complaints about eyelets broken in transit.
I just caught a 48" muskie yesterday. I was rigged for bass so I had 20lb braid with 12 lb fluro leader.... Just unbelievable. Amazing fight, never thought I was gonna land it
Wow that’s inbelievable
Just watched this whole thing and I’ve been musky fishing for 5 years now. Still feel like a rookie haha
Those Xuron pliers are one of the best tools I have ever found. Bought them at a musky show, years ago, and now have several pairs. Great tool!
Good info. video guys. After chasing tools around the boat I finally mounted a long magnet on the side of the boat. All the tools stick on there and don't have to look for them.

Goodluck tomorrow! Let us know if you catch one!
@@TodaysAngler I will for sure. Thanks!
you can catch them on an ultralight... just not ideal lol. Got one fishing off the dock at my favorite lodge on lake of the woods.
Great video very informative.
Thanks for the instructions guys, very helpful.
God Bless....
You bet
Thank you for such a great video. Im new to musky and boy is it an investment. Think if I buy any more stuff. My wife will make me sleep in my truck. Lol
Hi whats the model of rod and reel? I’ve moved to the Upper Peninsula and would love to try catching these . Thanks Jeff
All the tips are covered in your video. 👏
Beautiful fish!!! Nice put back...
Amazing video thanks a lot! You guys rock
Do you guys put any kind of backing on before you put your braid on??
Usually a little mono
Todays Angler thank you I do it on my bass reels so was just checking. Thanks alot
Ha!!
Thanks, great job guys. ✌️
Awesome clip.
Split ring pliers:-P
Honest question: Any chance you could put this and maybe some other how-to's on a DVD and put it up for sale? I would buy that in a heart beat! Maybe throw in how to live-bait and how to techniques like depth, structure?
Afraid not. You can always watch it here?
i have a 7.3 jerk rod that casts pretty well, fish large pike in smaller rivers and if I'm on a lake, i fish from a boat. i don't see the need for a rod longer that 8 feet except maybe for figure 8
Figure 8s, exactly.
Grate video guys! Very helpful.
Ive always wondered why musky arent in mendota? Or are there?
Hey guys, could you do something with just essentials? I’m going to be in a kayak
Great video but you missed going over leader sizes for 80# braid. Can you use 80# FC with 80# braid. The shop was out of 100# FC and 120# seems to thick to tie with a uni to uni so I grabbed the #80 instead.
Any thoughts?
130lb. 80 maybe on light small twitch baits
Also we don't tie a uni, we use a swivel
@@TodaysAngler 130! What knot ties that?
I wanted to try and not use them. I cracked my rod tip eye last season. I'm assuming from me being an idiot and reeling to much in and hitting the swivel.
Will I get too much line twist without the swivel?
@@peterrodriguez7884 line twist will be an issue
What do you recommend for barbie doll baits?
I have the sojurn rod here in wesr virginia the rod goes from 2 to 10 oz lure they are not that big i use okuma cirtrix it can handle 1/4 up to what ever i use a smaller rod and use the same reel top water is the only way to go !!!!!! I have caught a musky on rapala more than anything j15 f 18 med heavy bass rod here it works well also i would not know how to act if i caught one as big as you guys do!!!!!!
Great work.
Caught 65-80pd grade bluefin with tranx 500
Thanks to you guys I just picked up a tranx 500HG for $400 CAD today. This is your fault lol...
Yoy will love it once you are used to its size. What it offers far offsets its weight.
Don’t just buy 1 of everything!
awesome vid! great tips as well
