    At least compensate the owners. Make them whole OR find a better plan? It's not like they couldn't redesign the interchange. They're just trying to do it as cheaply as possible at the expense of the citizens. Gotta save a few bucks so Newsom can give it to PG&E who will give it right back to fund his campaign...

      Eminent Domain requires the government to pay fair market value to property owners and in this case the garlic shop owners did not own the land so they don't get compensated, only the land owners do.

    All this to add a merge lane that will bottleneck to 2 lanes within 500ft. Another brilliant decision that already failed.

    This is not okay. Not fair to the business owner. They should be compensated for their losses. Moreover, this site should be declared a "landmark" and should be protected. Leave them alone. Please fight this in court. VTA is just being a bully.

    3 Tax you out by reassessment
    4 Eminent domain

      Car dependency is literally the only reason why that place exists, it's like any other highway side fruit stand that pushing the illusion that they're farmers trying to sell their goods, they only exists because tourists drive by.

    Strange. With the Gilroy Garden near, I would assume they would want to encourage anything to bring in the tourists. Even encircle the icon with the new interchange?

    The caltrans has no money neither does the city county or state. They must pass a bond and bill measure with the federal government etc. the use of eminent domains is a illegal search and seizure unless you're in a abandoned property or pre existing state owned land etc or a tax evader etc.

      Though with the current amount of thousands of properties that need to be torn down or something and some of those being high rises or large high rise industrial commercial where house building i really doubt the urgency or emergency of the use of eminent domains and presence of danger or public safety present in this one. Good be beginners of a stair side. Tai raid.

    Arent you entitled to "fair compensation" with imminent domain"? If the shop/home owner does not feel the govt compensation is fair and just, then that owner has a right for a hearing?
    I remember learning about that in a california real estate class about half a year ago.
    "Just compensation" is one of two conditions that must be met for imminent domain. If you aren't getting a cent you're either not telling the truth to make it sound like a sadder story, or you aren't standing up for your rights

    Hope they own the land their winery is on next door to this spot and it can be made better with both operations on site. Sad to see someone's life's work be shuttered so suddenly and out of their control.

    Oh no! This makes me so sad, I love that store and I really hope they can keep it going even if they have to move it someplace else. Their garlic ice-cream and garlic pastes are delicious.

    Traffic is some of the worst I've seen in that spot. Still, they need some sort of compensation for their loss of business. Especially for a place so iconic.

    Oh, wow. What a shame. That was one of the first things I saw when I moved to Silicon Valley in 1997. Although, I've never actually set foot inside the place.

    The only thing I agree with the DPRK on... Very limited access to cars and no freedom of movement should be the norm for non VIP type.
    Basically driving should be an INNER PARTY privilege.. and the OUTER PARTY does not get to drive.
